Bear with me b/c this is a long post. *Tom woke up feeling like he had been run over by a train. He remembered going to the bar, but not much after that. Slowly he swung his feet over onto the floor.* Kim: Oh! Ow! *she shouted as she awoke when Tom stepped on her.* Tom: What are you doing in here? *he said startled* Kim: I guess you don’t remember *she said yawning and stretching.*. You came home drunk and I helped you into bed. I guess I fell asleep on the floor. *Kim got up and was about to walk out of the room when Tom called out to her.* Tom: Kim! *She turned around hoping for something, anything from him.* Tom: *looking her in the eye* Thanks. Kim: *slightly smiling* You’re welcome. *This was really the first time he had treated her like a human being and she had a hard time supressing her smile while she and Angie fixed breakfast.* *A couple of days later Tom needed to run to town to pick up some feed for the horses and Kim asked if she could tag along. * Tom: You can if you want to. It’s just a quick errand though. Kim: That’s okay. I could use some fresh air. *They left and Cole stayed sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee. Angie was up in her room finishing something she had been working on the past two days. When she saw Tom and Kim leave she thought now would be as good a time as ever so she folded up the piece of paper and put it into an envelope. While she was walking downstairs her heart was beating so fast she thought it might leap right out of her chest. She saw Cole and nervously walked up to him laying the envelope on the table in front of him.* Cole: What’s this? Angie: It’s something I wrote. I wrote if for you. *With that said she quickly turned and walked outside. Cole was very curious about what was going on and he opened the letter to read its contents.* Go ahead and take your best shot, Let 'er rip, give it all you've got. I'm laid out on the floor, but I've been here before. I may stumble, yeah I might fall, I'm only human but aren't we all? I might lose my way, but hear me when I say,
I will stand back up. You'll know just the moment when I've had enough. Sometimes I'm afraid, and I don't feel that tough, But I'll stand back up.
I've been beaten up and bruised. I've been kicked right off my shoes. When the darkness tries to get me, There's a light that just wont let me. You might take my pride, and tears may fill my eyes,
But I'll stand back up. And you'll know just the moment when I've had enough. Sometimes I'm afraid and I don't feel that tough, But I'll stand back up.
So, go ahead to take your best shot, Let 'er rip, give it all you've got. You might win this round but you can’t keep me down, 'cause I'll stand back up.
I didn’t know how to say it but I wanted to thank you for all you've done for me. *Cole couldn't remember the last time he had cried over anything, but after reading her words he could feel the warm tears begin to well up in his eyes. He wiped them with his sleeve before they had a chance to run down his cheeks. He got up from the chair and walked outside to find her. She was sitting under the big oak tree behind the house and when she saw him walking towards her she stood up. He had a serious look on his face and she was afraid that he had hated the poem.* Angie: *looking down at the ground* I knew it wasn't any good. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate what you've done for me. Cole: The poem was beautiful. Angie: Really, you liked it? *she said looking up at him* Cole: Yeah. *They both smiled at each other. His eyes looked wet like he had been crying a little and she gently reached up and wiped the tear he missed with her thumb. He took her hand from his cheek and gently kissed her palm. Then he bent down and with his arms around her pulled her in close for a tender kiss. Surprised, she pulled away slightly but then leaned in and kissed him again.* Angie: Wait a minute *she said as she wriggled out of his arms.* What about Carole? Cole: Oh yeah, *he said as he sat down under the tree*. We broke up a couple days ago. Angie: You did!? *she said trying not to sound too happy as she sat down next to him.* Cole: Well to be truthful, she dumped me. *Angie's heart sank thinking he had only kissed her because he was lonely and upset about his breakup.* Cole: She told me that she could tell I had feelings for you. *All the sudden her heart that had sank down to her toes was now up in her throat.* Cole: She was right too *he said smiling shyly and looking into her eyes.* I don't know how it happened. We're so different and you're still kinda spoiled *he said chuckling*. Angie: Well you're still as hard-headed and stubborn as an old mule *she said resting her head on his shoulder* *Cole leaned over and kissed her forehead, then she raised her head and slowly moved close to him and they kissed again. A few minutes passed and Angie heard Tom’s truck heading up the driveway. She pulled away from Cole and stood up quickly.* Cole: What’s wrong? *he asked as he reached up and gently held her hand* Angie: Kim and Tom are back. Cole: So? Angie: I don’t want them to know…about this. I hope that doesn’t sound bad but I don’t want Kim to think I’m siding with the enemy. Cole: *standing up* I understand. But we can’t keep it secret forever. *They walked back into the house and were seated at the kitchen table when Tom and Kim came in.* (I can’t take credit for the poem. It’s actually lyrics to a song called Stand Back Up by Sugarland.)

"Fine!" Kim yells, slamming the truck door and storming into the kitchen just as Angie and Cole enter as well. Tom hangs up the keys and shakes his head, just sick of all the bickering and fighting -- never able to keep her quiet or calm for 5 minutes. Kim stomps up the stairs; Angie chases after her. Cole looks to Tom -- wanting to ask what happened but knowing the relationship between the two...he decides against it.
"What happened?" Angie says, sad to see Kim in such a mood but also somewhat glad to know she was too distracted to notice her and Cole together by the tree. "What happened?" Kim mocks, wiping her tears. "He's just a jerk with a big chip on his shoulder -- that's what!" she takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "I hate him, Angie; I hate him so much I can't even stand to be in the same house with him sometimes." "Then why did you go with him this morning? And why do you --" "Because I want to like him, Angie. But he doesn't want to like me back. He's been so screwed up in the head for so long he can't even think normally." "Just tell me the whole story -- how did it start?" Angie begins, but catches the 'don't play dumb, you know when it started.' look. "In the car, I mean. What did he do to set you off?" Kim takes a deep sigh, attempting to try her best and convey the story just as it happened. "We got into the truck and everything was fine." Kim starts off; Angie nods. "Then once we got into town I started to question him about his past." Angie goes to speak up; knowing that to bring up a past like Tom's -- with a man like Tom -- isn't the brightest idea in the world. Kim continues, "I just wanted to help him and he started to ignore me again! Now it isn't so bad that he ignores me, but he has this way of making me feel like I'm evil, or something, whenever I bring it up!" She scoffs to herself, "he's had enough years perfecting that icy cold silence I'm surprised he hasn't literally frozen into an icicle yet." She takes a long and winded sigh, shaking her head. "So I just told him that I thought he should grow up and--" "Kim, you can't change him." Angie interrupts. "Tom Henry will always be Tom Henry -- just like you will always be Kim Nelson. If you've tried so far and nothing's worked yet...just give it up; leave him alone. He isn't like the other boys we've met at those parties who's sadness can be healed with a couple kisses and a dance. He obviously has a deeper pain than maybe you realize. Just let him be..." Kim looks down, silently sobbing. She wipes a tear and nods, knowing she's right. "Thanks Ang." she smiles weakly. Angie goes to walk out of the room when Kim speaks up. "How are you and Cole doing?" she sniffs back the tears a couple times. Angie freezes in place. Me and Cole? She turns around and chuckles weakly. "What do you mean?" "I mean how's he treating you? He doesn't really bark at you as much as he used to. What's your secret?." She prys jokingly. Angie smiles faintly, gulping back the nerves. "Oh, there's no secret, really. We've just learned to stay out of each others' way." She chuckles weakly then quickly walks out of the room to avoid anymore questions.
Later that evening while Angie is finishing up the dishes, Kim lays in her bed and tries her absolute darnedest to imagine life where her and Tom could get along. She realizes now, with much brain storming and heart searching, that she was wrong. Constantly bringing up his past -- a past he had no control over -- was wrong and she shouldn't have snipped at him the way she did. I have such a long ways to go. She sighs, as memories of her wrong-doings and wrong-sayings surface, making themselves known to her more and more. I'll really try harder the next few weeks. I won't badger him so much about his past and I'll accept him for who he is. Tom Henry: not a stubborn-headed mule who tries to make her life difficult -- but a man who cries silently with a broken heart; just trying to clear up the fog in his own life and find his lonesome place in this world. Maybe a life where the fear of abandonment no longer exists and the deep love of a woman could begin to heal his 20 year old wounds.

*Angie stood at the sink washing up the last of the dishes while Tom and Cole sat on the porch.*
Tom: I think I’m gonna go for a ride before I go to bed *he said as he put out his cigarette and headed toward the stable.*
Cole: Okay. Hey Tom!
Tom: Yeah?
Cole: I’m sorry for telling Kim about what happened when you were a kid. I just thought maybe she’d act a little better if she knew what hard times some people actually had to go through.
Tom: Yeah, well I don’t think it worked *he muttered as he continued on his way.*
*Cole got up and turned to go inside where he saw Angie wiping up the water along the edge of the sink. He snuck up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders making her jump.*
Angie: What are you doing? *she said afraid someone would see them.*
Cole: This is what I’m doing. *He said in a deep, sensuous tone as he leaned down and kissed the back of her neck sending shivers all the way down her spine into her toes.*
Angie: What if they see us!? *she said weakly as she felt her knees buckling underneath her.*
Cole: Your sister is upstairs and Tom went for a ride. *he whispered in her ear.* Now kiss me. *He said as he turned her around. She put her arms around his neck and did as she was told. After a few minutes they pulled away from each other knowing that Tom would be back soon.*
Cole: Well I guess I’ll go on to bed.
Angie: Okay *she said brushing the soft, dark hair from his forehead*
*Cole kissed her goodnight and went into his bedroom leaving her standing by the sink in a daze. No man had ever made her feel so weak and also so strong at the same time. She’d also never known what it felt like to have man kiss her who really meant it. It was a wonderful feeling and she wanted to hold onto it forever.*
*Kim had finally stopped crying and she pulled herself together and decided to go down and help Angie with the dishes.*
Kim: Hey Sis! *she said walking into the kitchen.*
Angie: Oh hey!
Kim: *seeing Angie had just finished cleaning up.* I’m sorry I ditched you. I was gonna help.
Angie: That’s okay. Are you feeling any better?
Kim: Yeah a little. *She got a glass of water and sat down at the table.* I was thinking about it and I decided I won’t bring up Tom’s past anymore.
Angie: *pretending to be surprised* Hey is my little sister finally beginning to grow up?
Kim: Maybe *she said chucking*.
*Tom came back in and when he saw the girls he ignored them and walked towards the hall and to his bedroom.*
Kim: Goodnight Tom! *she said in a sweet, sincere tone.*
Tom: Goodnight. *he said without stopping.*
Angie: Come on let’s turn in too.
Kim: Okay.

Another few days pass as the girls' progress levels increase dramatically. Every night Angie and Cole sneak off into the prairie and gaze among the stars -- their fondness for each other growing stronger everyday; while Kim finds comfort in the small things -- like the lost golden retriever that Cole found wandering around in the woods a few days ago. He told the girls they could keep it, but since Angie's been so busy with Cole's new "schedule", Kim's grown more attached to it every day. It even sleeps with her at the foot of the bed at night, which she doesn't mind so much anymore; she's grown used to the dirty life -- not loving it, mind you -- but she's come to realize that if she were to have worn her pretty outfits...they wouldn't stand a chance against the duties she's been faced with day after day.
"Angie?" Kim calls out as she searches for the bar of soap that always seems to disappear when she decides to wash the laundry outside. No answer. She must still be out with Cole. He better not work her too hard, I want a sister to take home with me when all this is over. Kim thinks to herself. She continues to search around, looking underneath the deck and in the basket of clothes that she brought out with her. "Nevermind! I found it!" she chuckles to herself, wiping a strand of hair from her eyes. She pulls up her sleeves and reaches into the basket to wash the first piece of clothing -- it's one of Tom's shirts. She pauses, then pulls it out and holds it close to herself, putting the sleeve around her shoulder and the other around her waist, dancing just as if she were dancing with him. She laughs at herself and quickly balls it up, but before she dunks it into the water her mind flashes back to the horse ride she had with him a week ago. She inhales the scent of his shirt once again, but only briefly, then dunks it into the water, shaking the feeling off. She hums as she works, keeping her mind focused on home; wondering what mother and father are doing, and hoping that they miss her as much as she misses them. Daisy, the golden retriever, perks her head and barks playfully at Kim as Tom walks up the steps and into the house, pretending as though he hadn't seen what she did just moments earlier with the shirt. Kim hardly even notices his passing anymore; she just steadies her thoughts on other things. And when thoughts of him do pop up, she doesn't dwell on them for long because for some odd reason it's just too painful to think of him at all anymore. Never had she experienced this with the other men at home -- but then again she's also come to understand completely...that Tom Henry is not at all like the men back home in any possible way, so it's no use comparing. He still doesn't say anything to her -- he doesn't even look at her. They both just ignore each other and hope to leave this summer with their nerves and sanity still intact. Tom exits the house and walks back to the barn, almost stopping to go out of his way in kindness and ask if she needs some help, but he decides against it and just continues walking.
A truck pulls up into the drive and a man steps down. He meets up with Tom and the two speak for a couple minutes. The man walks back to his truck briskly, starting the engine and driving away. Tom runs into the house and grabs his keys, then bounds out the door toward his truck. "What's wrong?" Kim calls out to him. "My cousin! He's been shot during a hunting trip!" With that said, Tom starts his engine and drives off, speeding behind the other man.
That evening, almost early morning, Cole paces, worrying about Tom's cousin whom he's known for a few years. Kim and Angie sit at the table quietly. The phone rings and Cole picks it up immediately. "Hello?" he pauses, listening to the person on the other end. "Sure, stay as long as you need to, Tom; we can do just fine without ya' for a couple days. Take care of John and tell him I'm rootin' for him, too. Yep...yeah, okay, Tom. Talk with ya' later." Cole hangs up the phone and takes a long sigh. Kim perks just slightly, "Is his cousin all right?" she asks sincerely. "Yeah, he's fine. Just a bullet wound to his thigh. They say he'll pull through but Tom will have to stay for a couple days because he's the only one who knows how to tend to the wound properly." "Oh." Kim says softly, not wanting to reveal her true feelings of disappointment. But she, again, tries to detach her feelings for him and push them away.

*The next day the girls go about their chores as usual. That afternoon when Kim, who has become quite a good horsewoman, decides to go for a ride, Cole and Angie sneak off to the hayloft in the barn.*
Cole: You look so much prettier with your hair down like this and no makeup on.
Angie: *blushing* You’re sweet, you know that. *She kissed him but then got tickled and it was a couple minutes before she was able to stop laughing.*
Cole: What’s so funny?
Angie: I was just remembering that night we got into a slap fight.
Cole: *his face turned red and he hung his head* You know, I felt so bad about that. I didn’t get hardly any sleep that night.
Angie: Oh sweetie, don’t feel bad. I definitely deserved it.
Cole: Well still, I was raised to treat women better than that. My dad would tan my hide if he knew I struck a woman.
Angie: You know, I don’t really know anything about your family.
Cole: My parents live just outside Billings, that’s where I was raised. My mom doesn’t work and my dad teaches high school math.
Angie: Are you close with them?
Cole: Oh yeah, they’re great, and being an only child I guess that helped us be close too.
Angie: That’s nice. *she snuggled closer to him and rested her head against his neck.*
Cole: Are you and your sister close to your folks?
Angie: *sighing* We used to be. I guess things started to change when we had both finished high school and became a little more independent. We really didn’t use to be this bad.
Cole: Aw, you’re not so bad, just a little misguided maybe.
Angie: No, we were definitely bad.
Cole: Well I’m very proud of both of you. Do you realize how much you’ve changed since you’ve been here?
Angie: I guess we have changed a lot, huh, thanks to you and Tom.
Cole: I wish Tom could find a good woman and have what we have.
Angie: And what exactly do we have? *she said playfully looking up into his beautiful blue eyes.*
Cole: Something very special.
*Kim got back from her ride and after putting her horse back in the stall she went up to her room and got her journal. It was such a nice day she decided to go out to the hayloft and write for a while. She climbed up the ladder and was surprised by what she saw. Cole had his shirt off and he was leaned over a young woman kissing her very passionately.*
Kim: Oh! Sorry Cole, sorry Carole! *she said as she was about to head back down the ladder.*
*Cole sprang up quickly and Kim’s eyes got as big as plates when she saw the young woman, who was down to her camisole, was none other than her sister.*
Kim: ANGIE!!!
Angie: Hey Sis *she said sheepishly*.
*Kim hurried back down the ladder and went into the house and up into their room. Cole and Angie quickly got dressed and went inside as well. Angie went up to their room and found Kim sitting on her bed.*
Kim: So you and Cole, huh?
Angie: Yeah. *she said smiling*
Kim: When did this happen? And what about his girlfriend?
Angie: A little over a week ago, but it had been coming for a while. Carole broke up with him a couple days before we got together.
Kim: Why didn’t you tell me? I’m happy for you.
Angie: Well I wanted to but I didn’t want to rub it in your face. I know you like Tom and he won’t even say two words to you.
Kim: Yeah, I do like him, but it’s okay. You and Cole don’t have to hide it anymore.
Angie: Thanks *she said as they hugged and shed a few tears as well.*

The next day as Kim and Angie go about their daily chores, Angie spots Tom out of the corner of her eye. "Tom's back, Kim." Angie nudges Kim's elbow, smiling teasingly. But Kim moves about the kitchen, and nods like it's no concern of hers. "That's nice." Kim says softly, setting the plates around the table. "Don't you like him anymore?" Angie inquires. Kim stays silent. Angie shrugs it off, figuring it's just best not to get into it. Tom explains his cousin's situation out on the porch to Cole; but they sit so close to the porch door, the girls can hear as well. Though they don't eavesdrop, they can't help but hear it coming from directly outside the front door. "He'll be fine," Tom assures Cole. "it wasn't as bad as we'd thought at first. Just a minor infection; he'll be better within the month." Angie looks over to Kim, expecting to catch her in another one of her day-dreams, but Kim only continues working, as if not hearing the conversation. Tom walks inside and accidentally bumps into Kim who's sweeping the floor. She looks down and steps aside to let him pass. He walks past her and goes into his room. Cole walks into the kitchen and looks around the corner to see if Tom's looking. Once he's in the clear he bends down and kisses Angie on the neck. Kim excuses herself from the room and slowly walks up the stairs, trying to hold back from crying. "What's the matter with her?" Cole chuckles. Angie shrugs and shakes her head, "I have absolutely no idea." Cole takes Angie in his lap and wraps his arms around her. "Say, what do you think about a group photo?" he asks. "A group photo?" she raises a brow. "Do you know something I don't?" she jokes. He laughs, "No, no. You know those group photos that people take of their families and hang in their living room?" He asks. She nods. "Well, I thought it would be a good idea so we'd be able to keep the memory of this place alive -- all four of us." Angie nods her head and smiles, "Sure, sounds like a great idea to me. When do you want to have it taken...and where?" "I had a friend who could take the pictures for us. He's really great at developing them fast so we could have them before the weekend." "Wow, sounds like fun! I'll go tell Kim about it!"
Angie goes upstairs to find Kim holding the pillow to her chest and sobbing quietly. "What's the matter, Kim?" Angie asks as she closes the door behind her and sits next to Kim on the bed. "Nothing." Kim replies, brushing the tears from her cheeks and neck. "Don't lie; I know there's something wrong." Angie insists. "Please tell me." Kim looks down and takes a few sharp inhales, "I--" she begins, but exhales, unable to get the words out of her mouth. "Well?" Angie giggles, hoping to brighten the mood. "I love Tom." Kim says, biting her lip to keep herself from crying and looks up at Angie. Angie leans back, confused. "You love him? How? I thought you told me you hated him..." "I know; but I only said that because I was so angry. I've tried to put him out of my mind, Angie. I've tried so hard!" The tears begin to sting the corner of Kim's eyes as she continues. "I just can't do it anymore. I want to go home! Please, just tell Cole that I can't stay here any longer; he'll listen to you." Kim pleads. Angie folds her arms and shakes her head, thinking of how that conversation will play out. "He won't do it, Kim. Besides, we only have a month left so the toughest part is nearly over!" Angie tries her best to convince Kim to stay. Kim nods, as if agreeing, but everything in her just wants to crawl into a shell and sleep until it's time to leave. "Oh! I almost forgot to tell you. Cole wants us to have our pictures taken." Angie smiles brightly. "Really?" Kim says half-heartedly, wanting to sound excited. "Yeah! He has a friend who can develop the photos by this weekend so we can keep them in our keepsakes." I suppose it's easier for you to be happy. Kim thinks to herself. Your memories of this place will be somewhat sweeter than mine. I never want to remember this place as long as I live... "Great..." Kim smiles weakly.
