LOL, Well, I like that he sat on my legs instead. Though I kept imagining that when he was stood up I'd find that my legs broke into a million little pieces. "Well, I got out of chores today...so sorry for you, sis." Angie pauses and hesitates, then jumps on the bed and demands, "Cole, sit on my legs...NOW!"

Too funny! Of course if we're being realistic here I'd still be passed out from seeing him taking his shirt off and then being carried around by him

If this were a reality I don't think either one of us would become conscious in their presence...ever! lol. Well, if this were a real reality...I think you should do something drastic to Carole first....

*Lunch went slightly better than breakfast as the girls decided to just make cold sandwiches.* Tom: I gotta tell ya, *he said with his mouth full* I have a huge appetite and sandwiches ain't gonna cut it for every meal. Kim: Well we don't know how to make anything else *she said defensively*. Cole: I'd get Carole to come over and give you a few pointers but she's too busy today and tonight we're going to the dance in town. *The girls perked up hearing about a dance. They were tired of just sitting around that old house everyday.* Angie: *smiling sweetly* Can we go too? Cole: *nearly choking on his sandwich* No!! I have to look at you two all day and I'd like to be able to go on a date in peace. *Later that evening Carole arrived and found the girls trying to clean up the supper dishes. The kitchen looked like a tornado had hit it. Tom was sitting at the table reading the paper and making sure the girls cleaned up their mess. Cole had told her about their new plan for the girls and she was curious how it was going.* Carole: So how was supper? Tom: Unedible *he said in a disgusted tone and then went back to reading* Carole: *walking up to Kim and Angie* So how's it going girls? Angie: *wiping her forehead* Not very good. Carole: How's your snakebite? Angie: He told you about that? *she said getting mad but also feeling a little embarrased.* Carole: Yeah. Angie: It's better, thanks. *Cole came out of his bedroom dressed like something from a western fairytale (ha!) and Angie had to stop herself from staring at him.* [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/cowboyandthelady-1.jpg" src=" "] Cole: Hey Carole are you ready to go? *he said as he kissed her cheek* Carole: I'm ready. You sure do look handsome *she said smiling from ear to ear.* Kim: *turning towards Cole still holding the dishrag* Can't we please go to the dance? Cole: I've told you no a million times already. Carole: Oh Cole, don't be rude. They can come if they want to. *The girls didn't even wait for his reaction and they ran upstairs to change. Once at the dance hall Cole grabbed Carole and led her out to the floor as quickly as he could trying to get away from Kim and Angie. They tried to mingle like they had countless times at their fancy parties back home but this crowd wasn't exactly excited to see them. Carole noticed they didn't seem to be having a very good time and she suggested that Cole should dance with one of them in hopes that it would warm the others up to them. Kim had gone to the restroom so Cole reluctantly walked over to where Angie was sitting by herself.* Cole: *speaking through clenced teeth* Would you like to dance? Angie: You wanna dance with me? *she said shocked* Cole: Not really but Carole wants me too since everyone else is ignoring you. Angie: No thanks, I don't need a pity dance *she crossed her arms and sat back in her chair.* Cole: She said she wouldn't dance with me anymore if I don't dance with you. Please don't ruin the rest of my evening. *Finally Angie gave in and they looked like a couple of junior high kids at their first dance, very furtive and uncomfortable. Cole looked at Carole as if to say 'see we're dancing'. She gave him an expression that let him know he wasn't doing a very good job so he pulled Angie a little closer.* Angie: You know you're not a half bad dancer. *She looked up into his eyes and for the first time noticed how beautiful they were. They were sort of in between light and medium blue and the soft light in the dance hall made them look as if they were sparkling like two flawless diamonds.* Cole: What? *noticing her staring at him* Angie: Nothing! *she said curtly and looked back down* *When the song ended Cole turned away and went back to dancing with Carole while Angie walked outside to get some fresh air.* Angie: *thinking to herself as she realized she was trembling slightly* What's wrong with me? He's not my type at all and he's just awful! *But then she also remembered how sweet he had been to her the night before when he bandaged her leg and how good it felt to be carried in his arms.*

Eeeeeee, I love it!! So romantic, Angie! I'm house-sitting for the weekend and I'm on this strange computer with a terribly awkward keyboard; I have to get situated then come up with something on my laptop then drag it over here with the USB. *Takes a deep exhausted sigh* Okay, I'll be back in a bit. P.S. I canNOT wait to see what happeneds next; this is seriously such an amazing story -- I am completely in love *sigh*

Once she's finished primping her hair and makeup, Kim exits the bathroom, more determined to find a guy for the evening. "I can't go back to that house without dancing with at least one guy; I can't -- I won't! I've been cooped up in that land of misery for far too long; it's time to have some fun tonight." She sets out to find a guy, walking through the crowds and putting on her "charm" but none of the men seem to be attracted to her nor she to them. They snicker and point as she walks by, thinking she looks completely over-dressed and labeling her as 'one of those'. "What's wrong with these men -- are they blind?!" she mutters to herself as she eventually wanders back to the table she first laid her purse upon and scans the crowds, looking for Angie. She looks around and spots Angie dancing with a man; her high hopes for her sister diminish when she finds it's only Cole. 'What's she doing dancing with him? And how in the world did they both agree on it?' She wonders to herself, continuing to scan the crowds for at least one handsome man. She takes a sigh and fiddles with the beads on her dress Carole walks over to Kim to keep her company. "Hey girl, no luck with any guys yet?" she asks. "No..." Kim looks down. "Is Tom here?" she perks, still hoping there were some way to snag him. "No, sorry. Tom doesn't come to these dances." she says, watching Angie and Cole dance, smiling sweetly. "Has he ever had a girlfriend? I mean, not that I honestly care, but Cole said he hates women." Kim asks in such a way to sound as though she couldn't care less; just wanting to get as much information out as possible. Carole turns her eyes back on Kim and shakes her head. "He's had girlfriends in the past, but they never lasted for long. The women always flocked to him but he was never interested." Carole explains softly. "Then why did he have girlfriends if he was never interested?" Kim inquires, her snobbish attitude somewhat diminishing as the sweetness of Carole begins to rub off on her. "I don't know, he's a really sweet guy once you get to know him but he's very stand-offish. Girls love him because he's appealing to the eye but they never seem to dig any deeper. I guess he doesn't figure it's worth the hassle anymore -- so he tends to his Aunt's farm and plans to take it over once she passes on." Carole finishes explaining and smiles. "You seem to be interested in him." It breaks the spell that Kim dazed into earlier when Cole told her the story. She leans back in her chair and scoffs. "No, I'm not interested in him," she lies right through her teeth. "I just find him very peculiar." She chuckles weakly and corrects herself, "the word I'm looking for is weird, I guess." Kim looks down, knowing Carole can see right past her lies. "Well, he isn't all that weird; you just gotta be nice to him -- that's all he's looking for." Carole says sweetly. Kim looks down, feeling guilty. "That's the root of your problems. You're all so mean to each other; you can't expect the boys to like you because you're pretty. Women think it's the men who are supposed to wait on them hand and foot; but a real woman knows it's because of her deep respect, servant-like attitude and humble heart that attracts and captivates them. True beauty is on the inside -- inside the heart that brightens up your eyes with kindness and joy." Carole says; Kim interrupts. "You have that," she smiles. "With Cole. You two seem so happy with each other. I've never seen that in a couple." Carole looks over to Cole, who is still fighting with Angie on who gets to lead or not. "Yeah, he is very special." she smiles. Kim turns her gaze toward the entrance, her heart flutters when she sees Tom walk in through the door. "Tom!" She squeals, but quiets down when she looks over to Carole, embarassed. Tom walks over to Carole and goes to ask her a question but Kim interrupts. "Tom, would you like to dance?" Tom ignores her and continues with his question. "Where's Cole? Bess is about to have her baby." he pants. "Now?!" Carole gasps, standing up. "Bess? Is she a friend of yours?" Kim inquires. Tom looks at her, then to Carole with a dead-pan look. "Why is she here?" "I invited her." Carole replies. "Come on." Carole and Tom head out the door when Carole stops Tom outside the truck. "Tom, I think you should stay here." Tom gives her a confused look as if to say, 'why would I possibly want to stay here?' "Kim doesn't have anyone to dance with and she--" "I won't dance with her, Carole. She isn't my responsibility." He insists, tired of her name being brought up. "She is your responsibility while she's here, Tom. And she desperately needs a friend." "She has her sister." "No, she wants a man to dance with-- just for tonight. Just go dance with her; please?" Tom lets out a deep sigh of frustration and jumps into the driver seat, starting the engine. "She doesn't need any favors, Carole. She's a grown woman and she can take care of her own needs -- she's already made that quite clear." Tom speeds off down the road with no help but his deepening hatred for women to comfort the wounds of his past.

*Carole turned around to head back inside when she saw Angie who had an upset expression on her face.* Carole: Angie, are you okay? What are you doing out here? *she said putting her hand on Angie's shoulder. Angie: It was just too stuffy in there. *she said lying* What did Tom want? Carole: Bess is about to drop her foal. I'll go find Cole and you get Kim and meet us back at the truck. Cole: *seeing Carole hurriedly walking towards him* Was that Tom here a minute ago? Carole: Yeah, Bess is gonna have her foal tonight. Cole: *smiling broadly* Oh, well let's go!! Angie: Come on Kim we have to go *grabbing her by the arm*. Kim: I'm not ready to go. *she jerked her arm loose* I haven't danced with anyone yet. Hey why were you and Cole dancing? Angie: Oh Carole made him do it, it was some kind of pity date thing. Now come on we have to go because Bess is about to give birth. Kim: Who is this Bess person everybody keeps talking about? Angie: She's Cole's mare. You know the one I've been riding. Kim: Oh, alright let's go *she said dejectedly*. *They all piled into Cole's truck and sped back to the ranch. When they got there Tom was in the stable with Bess and he had already gathered the things they would need like towels and water.* Cole: *getting out of his truck and walking towards the stable* Come on Carole *he said taking her hand*. Hey, you girls better get into bed. It's late. Kim: I might as well. There's nothing else to do around here *she walked into the house but Angie just stood there next to the truck.* Cole: You can go in too. Angie: Well...can I come with you and help? Cole: *very surprised* You want to help? *Angie nodded.* You might get your dress dirty. *he said looking at her beautiful gown*. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/7355watermelondress.jpg" src=" Angie: That's okay. Cole: Well come on then. *After a couple hours Bess finally delivered her foal. Cole handed Angie a towel and they both began to clean and dry the little animal.* Cole: *thinking to himself as he saw Angie smiling at the new baby* I don't think I've seen her really smile before. She has a beautiful smile. *Their hands touched for a moment while they were drying the foal and they looked at each other awkwardly for a fleeting moment. Angie stood up, said she was tired and went inside the house. Carole saw this and for the first time she began to wonder if Cole was beginning to like this strange city girl.* Kim: Angie, you're dress is all nasty. *she said as Angie walked into their room.* I guess Bess had her baby okay. Angie: Yes she did and you should see him. He's so cute and helpless. *Angie took a shower and then laid down on her bed about to go to sleep when Kim asked her a question.* Kim: Do you like Cole? Angie: *sitting up her eyes wide* Why would you ask that? Kim: I was just wondering why the sudden interest in livestock. Angie: I like Bess, she's a sweet horse that's all. Do you like Tom? Kim: Of course not!! Angie: Okay, well goodnight then. Kim: Goodnight. *They both lay there awake knowing they were lying through their teeth.*

Another week passes, and the girls get up without the rude awakening. They've finally learned that if you don't get up on time -- you get a bucket of ice water dumped on you in exchange for an extra 15 minutes of rest. They yawn and put on their scrubby clothes, sauntering down the stairs and clanking the pots and pans around, getting ready for breakfast. "Good morning." Cole says half chipperly -- lowering his tone and clearing his throat to, still, sound somewhat perturbed. He walks into the kitchen and smells the aroma of freshly prepared sausages and eggs. He steps over to the cooking pot and leans over to see how Angie's doing. A slight brush against his arm sends goose bumps trickling down her spine and arms; Cole has the same feeling but both act as though nothing happened. "I'd watch them sausages if I were you, don't get too cocky." he says, trying to sound as though he's still not pleased with their improvements. Cole sits down at the table and opens the newspaper -- which has been sitting on the table for nearly 2 weeks. He only slightly glances through it -- his mind on completely different things. Kim dishes up a plate and sets it down in front of him. He looks it over and inhales deeply. "Doesn’t look nuthin’ like what we've been havin’ -- what changed?" Cole inquires. "We found a book on how to cook!” Angie giggles, “It's incredible, really; I never knew there were instructions!" she laughs and goes back to dishing up the rest of the plates. Cole takes a bite and nearly gags, holding his throat. "What's the matter?" Angie gasps, rushing to his side. "Too...much sa...--salt!" he coughs, running toward the sink for a glass of water. "Ooops, must have over-salted when I was talking with you, Kim." Angie chuckled, embarrassed; actually telling the truth. Kim raises a brow and looks to Cole, figuring Angie had done it on purpose and snickers, as if to congratulate her for another job well done. Cole hears Kim's snicker and shoots a glare at Angie. "So you planned this all along?! I should have known!" he grinds his teeth. "No! I--" Angie goes to defend herself but Cole grabs his coat and storms out of the house -- Angie chases after him. Tom walks out of his room quietly -- not intentional, that's just how he walks (lol) -- and dishes up while Kim is looking out the window, wanting to see how Cole will react. Tom dishes up a plate full of eggs and forks it into his mouth; he pauses then spits it out. He throws the plate onto the ground -- breaking it and startling Kim. Kim spins around to find him gulping down a glass of water. “Why on earth did you eat that?!” Kim shrieks, walking over to throw the rest of the eggs down the drain. “Because it’s food!” he snaps back. Kim folds her arms and sighs, “It was over-salted; Angie put too much salt into the eggs.” She says, as if he didn’t know. Tom sets down his glass and pushes the porch door open, getting ready for another hard days’ work when Kim stops him. “Tom!” she yells then pauses, “would you like me to help you?” she asks sincerely. Tom turns around and looks at her. “Can’t you just leave me alone?” he says angrily. “I only want to help you…” she says calmly, trying to be nice. “I don’t want your help! You don’t know how to do anything right and you only slow me down.” He goes to walk away when Kim speaks up. “Cole told me about your past, Tom. I won’t hurt you; I just want to help.” Tom turns around; hurt that his best friend would tell her about his secret but also somewhat softened that maybe she could care about his feelings. The hatred takes place of the pain and he snaps back, “You have no business to go asking about me, do you understand?!” He grabs her by the wrists. “Ow, Tom, you’re hurting me!” she screams. The same hatred that his mother had for him now peaks its ugly head and is used toward Kim. He realizes by look on her face…it was the same look he had when his mother would beat him. He immediately lets her go and walks off toward the barn. Kim walks into the house, rubbing her bruised wrists. She sits down hard on the chair and hangs her head, sobbing. She sobs not because of Tom, but yet again, because of her self-pity; not truly understanding why she was sent here – to this awful house. She’s tried to make the best of it, but it’s no use. She might as well just give up trying to be nice to him; it doesn’t work – and they both know it.

I love that pic of him and it just fit perfectly with that part of the story. *Angie caught up to Cole as he was getting in his truck.* Angie: Would you stop a minute and listen to me?! Cole: I don't have time for this. I've got to put some hay out for the cattle. *He pushed her aside and started the truck. He was just about to take off when she jumped in the back and rode out to the pasture with him. Once they got to the little barn where they kept some hay he got out and went about his business completely ignoring her.* Angie: *following him* Would you please listen to me? *she said as she grabbed his arm.* I did not mess up your breakfast on purpose. I just got distracted talking to Kim. *He looked her in the eye and without saying a word took her hand off his arm and turned away again.* Angie: I swear Cole Harden, I've never met a man more hard-headed than you in my entire life!! Cole: *finally he put the pitchfork down and walked over to her* I'm hard-headed!? *he said raising his voice* How long did it take you to finally realize that if you get up on time you won't get an ice water wake up call? *Angie began laughing because he was right. Amazingly enough Cole broke down and laughed too.* Angie: I really am sorry about ruining your breakfast. I'll try to pay more attention today when I fix your lunch *she said sweetly* Cole: Please do. Especially if it has any pepper in it. *They got tickled again and when the laughter subsided they fell into another awkward silence. That had been happening more and more lately between them.* Angie: Well since I'm out here I might as well help you. Cole: You're volunteering to do work?! *he said pretending to be surprised.* *They finished putting out the hay and drove back to the house just in time for lunch. Angie tried to get out of the truck but her door was stuck and she couldn't get it open.* Cole: Is that door sticking again? Angie: Yeah. Cole: Well just slide over and get out on this side and I'll look at it later. *Angie did as he said and he put out his hand to help her get down but she slipped and fell into his arms. They looked into each other's eyes for just a moment and then he let her go and she went into the house to get lunch ready. Carole had just driven up and she saw this happen.* Carole: *walking towards Cole* Hi Sweetie! Cole: *snapping back into reality* Hi! *Carole's smile faded some because he always kissed her hello but this time he didn't.* Carole: I just thought I'd come by and see you for a minute. Cole: Do you wanna stay for lunch? Believe it or not the girls are getting a little better at cooking. Carole: No I can't stay long. So they're getting better huh? Cole: Well Kim still has a long way to go but I think Angie's attitude is changing. Carole: *trying not to show her jealousy* That's good. Well I better be heading back home. Will I see you tonight? *she moved closer to him and put her hands on his arms.* Cole: I don't think I'll be able to get away tonight. With the rain we got yesterday it put me behind on some of my chores. Carole: Okay *she said disappointed.* Well I'll see ya I guess. *She rose up on her toes to give him a kiss but instead he kissed her forehead and then headed to the stable.* *Walking back to her truck Carole wondered if he really was too busy to go out with her or if he just wanted to stay with Angie. Cole walked out the stable and saddled up Hank. He needed to clear his head and he thought if he took a quick ride before lunch it might help.* [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/legendsbook0019new.jpg" src="

Kim spots Angie walking into the house; she gets up from cleaning the rest of Tom's broken plate and eggs off the ground and wipes her hands on her apron. "How'd it go? Beat any sense into him yet?" she pauses, "or was he the one who beat the sense into you?" she chuckles, mockingly looking her over for any bruises. "No, none of that." Angie replies, wanting to tell Kim everything but she decides against it, opening up the pantry to prepare lunch. 'Everything..' Angie thinks to herself then scoffs. 'All I did was fall into his arms -- that's hardly "everything". She focuses on lunch but her mind continues to wander. 'I know I wasn't the only one who felt something. The way he looked into my eyes...I know he felt it, too!
Kim finishes rinsing the food remains from the sink and stands with her hands on her hips, looking about. Her mind wanders as well, hardly thinking of what she's even doing, just trying to form a story in her own head about Tom's life -- perhaps like a puzzle. Piecing together a man she knows little about but forming his perfect image in her head, just as a little girl does: dreaming about her wedding day. She doesn't even seem to notice that as she's thinking about him...she's down on her hands and knees scrubbing the living room floor boards. Tom walks in to get something from his bedroom drawer, walking past her in absolute shock and confusion. She has a...normal smile on her face, as though she's truly happy and content -- humming even! He shakes his head and grabs what he needs from his room then heads back out. Kim notices him out of the corner of her eye and raises her head to speak with him -- he catches her eye, hoping and praying she doesn't ask him to help; but she says nothing; she swallows her question and smiles kindly. Tom looks down, acting as though he never saw it. Angie calls everyone to lunch; and as they all gather around, they speak not a word to one another -- just absolute silence. After lunch Kim and Angie clean up their messes and do their chores without a peep. Tom and Cole saddle up a few horses for the girls' surprise training. "They've been working all day without squawkin', Tom!" Cole laughs, absolutely astonished. "Yup." Tom replies, focusing on his work, too busy to be worrying about those girls constantly. "I'd say they're doing a pretty swell job, too! Wouldn't you say?" Cole swats at Tom's arm and chuckles. "I don't give a hoot either way anymore, Cole." Tom says as he finishes up his horse and pulls out a cigarette, walking off. "Tom, wait." Cole catches up to Tom and places his hand on his shoulder. "They really aren't so bad once you get to know their personalities." "You haven't gone and fallen for one of 'em, have ya'?" Tom raises a brow, taking a puff of his cigarette. Cole pauses and laughs the question away. "Of course not. I'm just saying that they're human beings too; we can't go around and keep treatin' 'em like cattle." Tom throws down his cigarette and steps on it, "They're gettin' pretty good treatment over here, Cole. I'd say it's too good for 'em. But they're your responsibility and I--" Cole cuts Tom short. "Tom, I've been your friend ever since we was youngins; I know you've been through a lot but you have to start living life -- not hating it. You can't get no where if you hate your way through life. Give kindness a chance. Sure they may not deserve it -- they're stubborn, bull-headed and spoiled; but weren't you like that when you were a kid?" Tom takes a step back and sighs deeply. "I understand what you're sayin', Cole. But why did you have to tell her about my past? Now she's just usin' it against me and makin' me feel like I'm 6 years old again! I don't like her, Cole; and neither you or Carole can talk me into it." "You don't have to like her, Tom; you just have to treat her like a person. She'll treat you with respect and she won't hate ya' as much." Tom looks down and nods, "I'll try my best." he says softly. "Good." Cole pats Tom on the back.
That afternoon the girls are helped up top their horses, ready to learn how to ride. The fellas jump onto theirs and begin to walk the horses very slowly. "I'm gonna teach Angie how to trot; we already had a lesson a couple weeks ago. We'll meet back here for dinner around 5; sound all right?" Cole asks Tom. Tom nods, looking back to Kim then averting his eyes quickly, nervous that he'll have to spend time with her alone...and actually be nice. Angie and Cole trot off as Kim and Tom's horses continue walking slowly. Neither say a word; neither know exactly what to say. "I uhm..." Tom begins, then clears his throat. "I'm sorry for the way I treated you this morning." he says, trying to sound as sincere as possible, gripping the reigns into his hands tightly. "That's all right," Kim smiles, "no harm done." She chuckles weakly, slightly rubbing her wrists. He shakes his head, feeling like an absolute idiot. Things go smoothly enough until Kim's balance on the horse gets uneasy. Her voice quivers, "Woah!" The horse takes this as a sign to begin galloping. The horse takes Kim on a wild ride as she holds on for dear life. Tom "yahs" his horse like an angry cowboy and furiously rides after her. "Stop!" she screams, trying to get control of the horse -- but it only gallops faster. Tom catches up to her horse and grabs the reigns, looking like an absolute professional when her foot slips out of the stirrups and lands her right onto the meadowy ground. Tom is forced to let go of the horse so it doesn't trample her to death. He slows his horse down and rides back toward her, picking her up. "Thank you." she pants, trying to catch her breath and steady her heart rate. He lifts her onto the back of his horse and the two ride back toward the house. On their way Kim holds onto his waist tightly, inhaling his scent of pine trees mixed with a subtle scent of cologne. The feel of a woman holding onto him tightly, gripping onto him like a helpless child boosts his inner strength and heals a bit of the hurt from his past. Knowing he was the one who saved her; he finally comes to the deep realization that he isn't a helpless child any longer; he's a full grown man with the strength to fight back...

On their way Kim holds onto his waist tightly, inhaling his scent of pine trees mixed with a subtle scent of cologne. Oh I can almost smell it!! I grew up in southeast Texas and the majority of trees down there are pine trees and I love that smell. *Kim and Tom got back to the house and she wanted to say something to him but all she could manage was a weak 'Thanks' as she slipped off the horse and ran into the house. Tom put his horse back into its stall as he muttered to himself 'I don't think I'll ever understand that girl.'* *Kim began to prepare dinner and she didn't realize that Angie and Cole hadn't come back until she was nearly done. Tom came in and sat down while Kim handed him a plate of food.* Tom: Hey fried chicken! When did you learn to make that? Kim: *sitting down with her plate* There was a recipe for it in the book. I hope it's okay. Tom: *taking a bite* Yeah it's alright *he said not wanting to pay to her too much of a compliment although it was surprisingly good.* *Angie's riding lesson had gone off without a hitch but when they were headed back to the house she got distracted by the beautiful night sky.* [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/JupiterVesta052407_westlake720.jpg" src=" Angie: What is that!? *she said surprised like a child as she pointed to the band of stars across the sky.* Cole: *riding up beside her and stopping* It's the Milky Way. Angie: You mean like the Milky Way galaxy? Cole: Yeah * he said surprised at her excitement.* Angie: And what's that? *she said now pointing at a very bright star* Cole: Jupiter. Angie: Oh my gosh, you mean you can actually see the planets? Without a telescope? Cole: *laughing a little* Yeah. I guess you've never seen them before living in a city huh? Angie: I've never seen anything like this in my entire life. It's beautiful! *Cole wondered what would happen if he leaned over and kissed her, but he couldn't muster up the courage to try it. What if she didn't feel the same way he did?* Cole: We better be gettin' back, they'll be wondering where we are. *As they rode up to the house Cole saw Carole's truck and he got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He knew that Angie would eventually go back to her world and he would stay in his. There couldn't really be anything between them and of course he had feelings for Carole too.* *Angie went inside while Cole put up their horses. She was so exicted to tell Kim about everything she had seen that she didn't notice Tom or Carole sitting at the table.* Angie: Kim, Kim! I've gotta show you something!! *she grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the sink where she was washing dishes and drug her out into the backyard to show her all the wonders in the clear night sky.* Tom: *seeing Cole coming into the kitchen* Hey, what took you so long? Cole: Angie wanted me to point out all the stuff in the sky, she'd never seen it before being from the city and all. *He noticed Carole giving him a somewhat icy stare and even though he was telling the truth he felt like he was lying.* Carole: *getting up* Can we take a walk outside? Cole: Sure. *They walked for a few minutes down the long dirt driveway with neither one saying a thing. Finally Carole stopped and spoke up.* Carole: So you were too busy pointing out constellations to go out with me, huh? *she said with a touch of anger in her voice* *Cole just stammered and stuttered unable to really say anything.* Carole: Don't think I haven't noticed the way you look at her Cole. You don't kiss me the same anymore either. *she hung her head trying not to cry.* Cole: Carole, *he said putting his hands on her shoulders* you know how I feel about you. Carole: I know you like me but you don't love me do you? Cole: And you think I love Angie? I barely know her. Carole: Maybe you're not in love with her but you like her don't you?? Cole: No, of course not! Carole: *turning and walking back toward her truck* Don't lie to me Cole! *she said raising her voice*. I deserve a man who will love me and look at me like I'm the only woman around. Cole: Carole wait! Carole: *getting into her truck* I'm sorry Cole but I just can't be with you anymore, I'm sorry. *He stood stock still while he watched her drive away. He slowly walked back into the house trying to act like nothing was wrong. Kim and Angie had come back in and Angie was eating dinner.* Tom: Is everything okay? Cole: Yeah everything's fine *he said as he headed to his bedroom.* Tom: Hey aren't you gonna eat? Cole: No, I'm just gonna go to bed.

Kim and Angie look to each other, neither know what's going on around them anymore. Confusion has a funny way of creeping in and building itself a home. How interesting that everyone deals with it a little differently. Tom stands up and puts his plate into the sink, gazing out along the starry night's sky from the kitchen window above the sink. He almost wells up with tears, storming out of the house and into his truck to get away from it all. The girls sit at the table quietly; Angie thinks nothing of his behavior because she figures that's just the way he is -- silent, mean and destructive. Kim shakes her head, not knowing what to think about him anymore but knowing there's always something on his mind and heart but she just doesn't know exactly what. They both walk up to their room and head in for bed.
Tom speeds off down the road -- gripping his hands around the steering wheel and clenching his teeth. What's wrong with me?! he wonders to himself. Cole's right, what's the sense of livin' if it ain't for happiness? ..But how can I ever be happy? He pulls up in front of a saloon a couple miles down the road and sits in the lot, thoughts running through his mind a hundred miles a minute. I don't like her; she's a spoiled rotton little brat with nothing on her mind but to make my life miserable. It's in her eyes... He pauses once the thought creeps into his mind. He looks down, knowing that was a lie -- he never actually looked into her eyes. Sure, he's glared at her -- countless times -- but to truly look into them, expecting to see someone looking back, was something that he had never really done before. She'll never change," he scoffs, "and neither will I. Who's to say I gotta be nice to her? Just because I'm a man and she's a woman doesn't mean we've gotta like each other. Ignoring her's worked just fine up til now. It's when I open my mouth that she'll see me for who I really am: just a mud-stained hillbilly from Montana with an ugly past I'll never be able to shake. He looks up at the brightly lit sign, flashing on and off: 'Buck's Tavern'. He opens his car door and slowly walks inside. The bar is noisy and the lights are dim. He walks up to the bartender and sits down. "A beer, please." he says lowly, kicking himself for even stooping so low as to think alcohol could heal all his troubles. The bartender sets it down in front of him -- the foam overflowing at the brim. Tom nods weakly and runs his thumb down the sweat of the glass slowly. He raises it to his lips and downs it; memories of pain, hurt and confusion about to go numb. Maybe tonight he'll actually get a good night's sleep.
Back at the farm, Kim tosses and turns, unable to get Tom off her mind. The way she gripped onto his waist and inhaled the scent of his cologne made her feel as though she was home -- in the presence of a man she could, eventually, see spending the rest of her life with. The surroundings made her feel as though she was alive -- breaking free from her stuffy old casket of fake freedom and forced happiness. She etched the images into her mind -- never to forget them. Yes, it's been a terrible 3 weeks and it doesn't look like it'll get any easier; but the one moment she had with him -- even though he had shown no emotion back -- gives her a little hope to continue on. The sound of the porch door slamming shut and someone staggering about brought Kim out of her daze. She looks over at Angie who's bound up as well -- alert and listening closely. Kim gets out of bed and walks toward the door. "Who is it?" Angie whispers, watching Kim intently to see her reaction. Kim's tense body relaxes as she peers down the stairs. "Only Tom." she says, motioning her hand to indicate it's all right for Angie to go back to bed. Kim walks downstairs to see what he's doing and why he's making so much noise. "Tom." she stands up straight, seeing the expression on his face; something she's never seen before -- absolute helplessness, wracked with pain. "What are you doing?" she asks, as he staggers to the chair, accidentally knocking things over. She grabs his arm to steady his balance and guides him to the chair. Once he's seated, her attitude towards him begins to change. "...Are you drunk?" she asks, turned off to find that he's not as strong as she thought -- stooping to alcohol to solve his problems. "I'hm not dschrunk!" he yells, holding his head and taking a deep sigh. "Tom, I think you should get to bed. You have a lot to do tomor--" He pushes her away and stands back up, staggering toward his room. She gets up next to him and places his hand around her shoulder to keep him balanced and walks him into the room. She lays him down on the bed and takes off his shoes. Her eye wanders to his walls, "They're completely blank." she whispers to herself, looking at each wall. She looks back down at him and covers him up with a blanket; when she goes to leave he reaches out his hand and their fingers slightly touch. The feeling sends electric shocks throughout her entire body; giving her heart wings. He holds onto her hand tightly and pulls her arm toward him, motioning her to come closer. This is it, she thinks to herself, he's finally going to kiss me! She leans in and begins to pucker her lips when he whispers half unconsciously, "Bucket...get me a bucket." She leans back and laughs at herself, completely and utterly at an end with this man. She gets up and slams around in the kitchen, searching for a bucket. Once she finds one she hands it to him gruffly and walks back out -- not once entertaining the thought that she'd lower herself to hold the bucket so he can throw up all over her. But she stands at the door and feels guilty, knowing she should help him in his time of need. She walks back in and holds the bucket; he gags a couple times then spits -- not actually throwing anything up. Kim takes a sigh of relief and continues to hold the bucket.
The next morning Angie's still fast asleep, dreaming of her and Cole, no doubt. The house is dead silent as Cole wakes up, a bit later than usual, looking around to find no one else around. He looks outside but the barn door is closed up and it doesn't look as though anyone's been up at all this morning. He walks into Tom's room and finds Kim sleeping beside him -- the bucket dropped down at her feet, out of sight. With eyes wide and a mouth nearly ready to drop open he shakes his head, closing the door. He shakes the feeling off and comes up with the only answer he can think of: She musta' drugged him....
