The next morning as Kim awakes to the sound of soldiers outside the tent, her eyes widen, "he's here!" she exclaims excitedly. She quickly scurries to the "door" and peaks her head through the opening. Looking down at her old clothes, which has blood all over them from the men who beat her the afternoon before, she hesitates on even leaving the tent, but she doesn't care about her appearance at the moment because her main goal is to find James, and she isn't too far off. But deep in her heart she wonders why he hasn't come to see her -- he knows she'd be waiting for him. She tries not to dwell on it, but it only begins to torture her more, "what if he's dead? What if he's never coming back? She tries to put it past herself as she walks through the crowds of soldiers, looking at each one intently. But after no success, she gets upon a chair and stands atop, scanning the crowds. "James!" she calls out; but no response. "James Braydon!" she yells once more to draw his attention. All eyes fix on her as she continues to look around but finding only soldier after soldier -- none being her own. She steps down and shakes her head, feeling herself get overwhelmed with yet another hopeless feeling, but she presses on and begins to ask around. "Have you seen Captain James Braydon?" her voice trembles as she questions a young soldier standing near the water pot. "No ma'am" he replies as he takes a sip. "Can I see the list of soldiers who were identified dead?" she asks weakly, holding her arms around her waist to hide her trembling body. "Ma'am, I'm sor--" the man begins to respond in a routined answer, but Kim cuts him off firmly, "I need to see that list!" she demands, with a voice filled with utter desperation. The soldier, wide eyed and startled, throws down his cup and walks over to his Commanding Officer. As the soldier begins to explain the situation, the C.O looks to the DIA (died in action) list then to Kim; she catches the look in his eyes and averts her gaze to the ground, embarrassed that she lost her tempter, though anything but sorry. The C.O walks up to Kim and pulls her aside gently, out of the soldiers' way. "Mrs. Braydon?" he asks in a professional Military tone. "Yes." Kim replies in an instant, ready for some real answers but unsure if she's truly ready for what could be said. "Your husband wasn't counted among the few that returned from battle." he replies in a tone that isn't as sympathetic as Kim would have expected in this type of situation. "What?" she gasps, feeling as though her knees may buckle. "Now don't get all up in arms about this, Mrs. Braydon, it could mean quite a few things." the man tries to explain. "What does that usually mean, sir? It usually means they're dead, doesn't it? If they don't return with the rest of the boys it means they're dead!" she begins to shout loudly, causing a scene. The man tries to calm her down but she knows it's just a way to give the wives false hope. Kim looks up to him and with tears streaming down her face she bucks it up and wants a final, definite answer, once and for all, "Just tell me the truth: do you think he's alive or not?" The man looks down and pauses for a moment then looks back up to her, "in a case like this...no ma'am, I don't." With that said, he walks off and leaves her standing alone. The world around her seems to fade, and all that she's hoped and dreamed begins to diminish and crumble before her feet. She slowly makes her way to the tent and stands, numb and motionless, tears streaming down her face and stinging her eyes. She walks toward a picture of him on the nightstand and holds it close to her chest. She then decides that she'll go back to her sisters in France and live a life that's dedicated to serving the soldiers; serving men who fought in the war, and treating each and every one of them as if they were her James. That afternoon, after taking the military bus to the train station, she walks up to the register and hands the man a $50. "I'm sorry, that's all I have." Kim says quietly. The man looks at her bloodied clothes, banged up cheek and black eye then smiles sympathetically. "Don't worry ma'am, you're paid in full." He hands her the ticket and smiles once more. Kim smiles weakly and nods her head; a faint "thank you." escapes her lips as she boards the train. As the train begins to creep slowly along, she holds James' photo against her chest; the pain is numb for now but soon reality will kick in and the life she so excitedly planned for will be washed away for good. "I will never love again." she whispers to herself, in a deep daze; memories flashing back to their happiest moments seem to all disappear, though she doubts they could ever be washed away for good. "Thanks mister!" James says excitedly as he takes the newspaper from the man's hands and begins to thumb through to the last page. His eyes scan through the words until he comes to the ad: "Kim Cooper (Oh please, you think I'd choose anything else? ) I've been in Corcianca for 2 days now; if you're reading this, tell your kidnappers where I am. I'm coming for you. -- Love James." He nods approvingly and pays the man to his last dime. "Send this out to all the surrounding cities and if you have to, send a few to France; just in case she got back". The man nods understandingly and places the money into his cash register. James walks out into the drizzly, rainy street and sits down at a cafe' street table with a smile on his face, but the smile soon fades as he begins to realize this doesn't solve much. Thoughts of the worst begin to wrap itself around his mind and poison his once happy dream. The newspaper slips through his fingers and drops to the wet cement as he lays his head into his arms uptop the table and feels his body slowly succumb to the sleep he's been deprived of for so many nights; bordering the walls of unconsciousness.

*Angie went down to the kitchen to get Jim's lunch but suddenly she felt very sick and had to run to the bathroom. When she came out she ran into Nurse Brown, the woman she met on her first visit to the hospital.*
Nurse Brown: Angie, are you alright? You look kind of pale.
Angie: I don't know. Once yesterday and then today just a few minutes ago I had a dizzy spell and I was just sick in the bathroom.
*Nurse Brown pulled her aside and they went into one of the empty rooms and Angie laid down on the bed*.
Nurse Brown: Can I ask you a personal question?
Angie: Sure.
Nurse Brown: Is it possible that you could be pregnant?
Angie: *sitting up surprised* Oh! I hadn't really thought about that but yes it's possible.
Nurse Brown: *smiling* Well that's probably it then. I can take some blood and run the test if you'd like.
Angie: *still feeling stunned* Sure.
*They went downstairs to a lab room and Nurse Brown drew some blood for the test and told Angie it would be a couple of days before she could get the results. Then she got Jim's lunch and took it up to his room. When she got there she found him limping back to his bed and trying to get up in it.*
Angie: What are you doing?! *she said angrily and surprised*
Jim: I had to go to the bathroom.
Angie: *setting the tray down and helping him get back into bed* Well you couldn't wait two minutes for me to get back and help you?
Jim: I'm perfectly capable of doing that by myself sweetheart.
Angie: Yeah but I can help you get in and out of bed so you don't hurt yourself any worse than you already are.
Jim: *seeing that she was really mad at him* Okay Angie *he said softly* I'm sorry.
Angie: No, I'm sorry for snapping at you. It's just that, well, I need you and I don't know what I'd do if I ever lost you.
*She threw her arms around him and squeezed him tightly*.

theresa: i had such a wonderful time darling
sam: so did i darling*he smiles*
they both fall backwards on the bed and snuggle up against one another.

"Miss?" Kim hears a faint voice calling to her, strangely sounding just like James. She continues sleeping, figuring it's only a dream...then she hears it once more. "Miss!" Kim shoots up from her chair and gasps, looking straight ahead. She fixes her eyes on a short, stouty man with a chubby smile and two small dimples. She moans and wipes her eyes, then looks around to find the cart empty. "Miss, it's 7pm and we need to clear everyone out of this compartment to inspect before people start settling down for the evening." the man smiles sweetly. Kim sighs, still a bit sleepy, and picks up her small bag, which isn't much, and the photo of James then steps out onto the train station platform. She yawns once and sits down on a bench, figuring she can wait until time to board but her stomach growls and she suddenly realizes that she hasn't had a good meal in 4 days. She picks up her bag and walks to a nearby coffee shop a couple blocks away and sits down in a small booth near the corner window. "What do ya' want?" the snobby waitress asks, looking to be no older than 17. Kim scans the menu quickly, hoping the right choice will just pop out at her. "I'll...ummm..." Kim hesitates, still unsure of what to order and a bit groggy from sleeping all day. "I'll have the ham sandwich club, please." The waitress snaps her gum and chews obnoxiously as she writes down the order. "Anything else?" she asks boredly. "No, thank you." Kim says weakly, tearing at her napkin, dazing out the window. The waitress rolls her eyes and walks away. If I wouldn't have gone with him...none of this would have happened. Kim thinks to herself. And I was so foolish, thinking of only myself when this war affects the lives of millions of other wives just the same; James is no different. She blinks twice and snaps free of her daze when those words enter her mind. "James is no different? Of course he is" she whispers out loud, "He's my husband and he's all I have left. Sure I have my sisters, but I surely couldn't live with them all my life, especially if they ever get married. He is diff--was...different." Reality hits like a brick wall every time she uses his name in the past tense. Was; could have been; used to be; ...never will be. Her heart sinks deeper and deeper by every passing moment and as it sinks so does her stomach; hardly able to bear the thought of food. As she looks around the small restaurant, she notices all the couples sitting at their quaint tables and giggling; in love. What did I do to deserve to lose him? Why him? Why us? The room begins to spin, her stomach churns and her head starts to throb. Hardly feeling she can even control herself she starts to hyperventilate and feels the pressed air moving up from her lungs to her throat. Screaming: it's the only thing she can think of that will release some of the pent up pain inside; nothing else will help. She holds her head and rubs her temples roughly, trying to make the strange feelings disappear; she raises her head quickly to gasp for air when the waitress lays the plate in front of Kim. Suddenly all is normal again. The waitress walks away and Kim looks down at her food. Her emotions are so frayed, she pushes the plate aside and nestles her head into her arms on top the table, and begins to cry.
As Frank and Rick are sitting at a restaurant, not far off from their hideout, Frank lowers his coffee and sets it down on the table, positioning himself on his metal chair and lays the newspaper down next to his coffee; a sinister smile plays across his lips. "What is it?" Rick questions. "We're going to Corcianca" Frank replies.

*A couple of days have passed and Jim gets stronger everyday. He's completely recovered from the mild concussion and is beginning to walk around a little on crutches. Angie was sitting at his bedside reading to him and he had nearly drifted off to sleep when they heard a loud cheering sound coming from outside. People filled the streets and were singing and dancing.*
Jim: What's going on?
Angie: I don't know.
*Angie got up to look out the window and then went out into the hallway. She could hear people downstairs in the lobby shouting 'The war is over, it's over!!'. Just as she was about to go downstairs one of the nurses came running up with a large stack of newspapers in her hands. She gave one to Angie and she read the headline in big bold letters.*
Angie: *running back into Jim's room* Look *she handed him the paper* it's over, the war is finally over!!!
Jim: I don't believe it *he said stunned*.
*Angie sat down on the bed next to her husband and excitedly hugged and kissed him. The whole town seemed to be in a state of celebration and it felt like the beginning of a new life for everyone. Still sitting next to Jim on the bed, Angie took the paper from his lap and began to read through it. As she was skimming through a page with some ads on it she saw a name that caught her eye. James Braydon had put an ad in for a woman named Kim.*
Angie: Jim, there's an ad in here for Kim!!
Jim: Your sister? What does it say?
Angie: It's from James Braydon, she met him the same night I met you at the dance. It says he's in Corcianca and he's waiting there for her.
Jim: That's in Italy. Did she get transferred there?
Angie: I don't know. I haven't heard from her or Theresa since I left for Troyes. When I went back to Loire our apartment was empty and I didn't see either one of them at the hospital.
Jim: Well we need to go find her then.
Angie: Are you sure you're up to it? It's a pretty long trip from here.
Jim: Well we'd mostly just be sitting on a train so it won't be so bad. Besides I know how much your family means to you.
Angie: I love you *she put her arms around him as a few tears fell from her eyes*. I guess I better go pack my stuff and get us a couple train tickets to Italy.
*Angie walked downstairs and saw Nurse Brown.*
Nurse Brown: Isn't it wonderful Angie!! It's finally over and soon we can all go home. Oh, I almost forgot in all the excitement I have the results of your test. Angie: I had nearly forgotten too.
Nurse Brown: Well when you and your husband get home you'll need to find a house with room for three.
Angie: You mean...I'm gonna, I mean we're gonna...
Nurse Brown: You're going to have a baby.

theresa: darling how about we go for a picnis today?
sam:you took the words right out of my mouth darling!
theresa:but now where to have it
sam: i know
theresa:what?
sam:lets rent bikes and roam around until we find a subtle place.....how does that sound?
theresa:wonderful*she smiles and scoots close to him* you always have great ideas darling
as sam rents the bikes, theresa packs the lunch for the two of them into a small woven basket. she sneaks a bottle of champagne and two glasses into it and giggles. sam comes back and sneaks up behind her to put his arms around her waist, kissing her neck.
theresa: that tickles1 *giggling*
sam: it is suppose to
theresa: alright......im done
sam: lets go *he whispers in her ear and she giggles more*
sam walks out the door carrying the basket as theresa locks up.
theresa:*looking to the ground after locking the room* oh.....sam must have not seen the newspaper was here. i guess ill bring it along just in case he wants to read it
theresa: be careful of your leg sam, dont overdo it
sam: my leg has healed already, not to worry darling.
theresa:just the same i dont want you to damage it even worse, so take it easy.
sam: oh alright
they ride side by side slowly through the little village and take a back road out into the country side.
theresa:oh look there is lovely spot under that big tree.
sam:okay
they take out the table cloth theresa borrowed from the small table in their hotel room and both layed it out over the green grass. theresa crawls overr it smoothing the wrinkles out with her hands as sam unloads the food.
sam: what is this?
theresa: oh i thought you might like to read it, we forgot to read it this morning.
sam: after lunch darling
theesa: agreed!
sam:champagne? and two glasses? i wonder who could have put those in there?
theresa whistles looking away, but cracks into a laugh. sam chuckles.
sam: this is such beautiful scenery.
theresa: yes it is*looking straight into his eyes and smiling*
sam turns to her and looks into her eyes too.
they move closer to each other and lean into a kiss with the wind blowing their hair wildly and the sound of the trees swaying to the wind are music to their ears. sam takes the newspaper to see what is going on and his face freezes.
theresa: you have the funniest look on your face
sam:...........the war.....its over!!
theresa:*gasps* really?
sam: yes! see*holds the paper up to her face*
theresa:*crawls closer to sam's side reading with him* oh yes, did you notice that there havent been any bombs going off today?
sam: thats right!...i hadnt thought anything of it.
theresa:i cant believe it
sam: well you better believe it darling
theresa scans the whole page wondering what everyone is saying about it, and stumbles across a tiny article.
theresa: sam!!! i know where i can find kim!!!
sam: your sister? what? how do you know?
theresa:because it says that james braydon has written that he is waiting for her in Conciana.
sam: who is james braydon?
theresa:the man kim met at the same dance that we met.
sam: oh
theresa: we have to go there darling, i hope angie sees it too, maybe she will be there too...you understand dont you?
sam:i understand darling*as he brushes her hair away from her face*
theresa: oh thank you sam!!!
sam: but it might take a while to get there.

Kim pushes the plate aside slowly and reaches into her small money purse, pinching out 89 cents. She lays the money on the table and continues to sit for a moment, knowing within a few hours she'll be leaving Italy and with it leaving her last remains of James behind her; never, of course, leaving his memory, but the place where their love grew and dwelled most -- blossoming into some sort of fairytale from a story book -- will only be locked to the confines of her heart and mind. She lays her hand across her cheek, brushing aside the fear that's consumed her tender face then takes a deep sigh, stepping out from the booth and making her way toward the door. On her way out with nothing more than a slight glance toward the train depot, she immediately realizes that the train has already taken off and left her high and dry. "No!" she cries, "No..." She lowers her head and sits heavily down upon a bench near the restaurant building. Balling her hand into a fist and gently knocking it against the wood of the bench she thinks to herself, I missed the train because of my own stupidity. Ho--how could this get any worse? How could this situation possibly get any worse? The emotional stress of this whole week has wrecked havoc on her body and mind; how could she continue with nothing more than a couple pennies and a quarter to her name? No family, no husband and no hope remains close by to comfort her in the time she needs it most, nor does she think any will ever be closer than it was only 1 month ago -- in a town of Troyes. At the time it didn't seem perfect: wounded men lying helpless in a stuffy old hospital tent on sweltering hot days with odd hours for little sleep, and sometimes no sleep at all; fear of a war inching closer to the homes of the family members living at home and hardly any money to keep the three sister content for even a week. No, at the time it didn't seem like perfection, but in Kim's eyes now -- at this very moment -- it was the embodiment of Paradise -- Heaven at a glimpse. She raises her head as a couple briskly walk past her -- probably in a hurry to catch the 9 o'clock movie playing down the street. Kim smiles weakly, trying to keep her focus on the 'brighter side of life'. But the smile soon vanishes at the thought of such a cliched remark bringing comfort in her time of pain and sorrow; but what else is helping? She looks around and realizes that the time to find a place for shelter would be now, as it appears to be getting dark and the streets of this city won't be getting too joyously peppy after certain hours of the night. She picks up her small bag and heads toward a small building which has a sign out in front: "Room for rent". I just hope they aren't penny theives she thinks to herself as she walks up the steps and rings the doorbell, waiting for an answer. A young woman about 23 and 5'5 comes to the door with a sweet smile on her happy face. "Hello" she says chipperly, in an American accent. "Hello." Kim replies in a somber tone, surprised by the familiar accent. "Are you looking for a room for the night?" "Yes, but I'm afriad I have very little money and I--" "Oh, don't you worry about a thing. My mother and I own this apartment and though we're no vagabond supporters, we're a pretty good judge of knowing who truly needs a place to stay or not." Kim smiles faintly, "Which category do I fit into?" The woman pulls Kim into the house by the arm gently, "judging by that black eye, and those dragged clothes of yours...I'd say that you're in a desperate need for a cup of tea!" Kim walks into the humble looking abode and sets down her bag near the door, along with her shoes. "My name is Norma" the woman says as she leads Kim to the kitchen. "It's lovely to meet you, Norma; my name is Kim." As they enter the kitchen Norma pulls out a chair for Kim then turns on the faucet to boil up some water. Kim sits down and smiles politely to the old woman sitting on her left. "Kim, this is my mother Irene." says Norma as she pours the water into a pot on the stove. "How do you do?" Kim nods. "How do you do?" the woman nods back, smiling sweetly as she sips her tea. "So what brings you all the way to Italy, Kim?" asks Norma. "Oh," Kim sighs lengthy, "it's a long story." "You're here for the evening, kiddo; and we ain't getting any younger." Irene chuckles. Kim chuckles weakly then looks down and pauses. "Well...I was married only a week ago--" "Congratulations, honey!" Irene cheers. "But he was killed in the war." she continues. "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that." Norma places the cup of hot water in front of Kim with a tea bag on the side. Kim smiles faintly, wanting desperately to utter the words, "it's okay" but in reality, those are the only two words she's unable to say. "How long?" Irene says in a soft tone. "I found out this morning." Two gasps come from the women and they 'tsk' as they shake their heads. "How are you getting along?" Norma asks sympathetically. "In all honesty, I'm not. I don't know what to do; I don't know where to go because I have no money left." "Don't you worry about that, dear; we'll take care of you." Irene smiles as she lays her hand gently upon Kim's. "Thank you." "I bet he was a wonderful husband, wasn't he?" Norma inquires, trying to get Kim in a better mood. "Yes, he certainly was..." Kim responds, then quiets down. "I'm so sorry, Kim." Norma whispers. Kim runs her thumb against the hot cup then wipes at her eyes quickly as a tear forms in the corner of her eye. "I'm sorry," Kim says. "It just takes some getting used to, I suppose. I guess it will be easier once the war is over. But until then I'll jus--" "But the war is over!" Irene declares. "What?" Kim raises her eyes to Irene; a faint glimmer of hope glistening in the corner of her eyes as shiny as the tears. "Yeah, haven't you read the papers?" Norma asks. "No; I haven't seen the papers in weeks!" Kim shouts. Norma quickly scurries to the living room and grabs the paper; then walks into the kitchen with it in hand and lays it in front of Kim. The words in bold print shout out, "WAR IS ENDED; VICTORY FOR FRANCE." Kim gasps and throws her hand over her mouth; tears well up in her eyes. "So it is all over?" Kim smiles. "Yes, dear; they just announced it this afternoon." Both joy and sadness overwhelms her; joy because the war has finally come to an end and sadness because if James would have only decided to stay back at camp..... Her gaze drops from the top of the newspaper to the bottom; her eye catches on a familiar word: "KIM" Knowing it's probably someone else, she reads on and follows the text down to the bottom just out of curiosity: "James." It's enough of a coincidence to prod her on to read the contents in between. "Kim, I'm in Corcianca waiting for you; tell your kidnappers--" Kim jumps out of her chair and holds onto the back for support, then looks to the women excitedly. "When did you say this newspaper was printed?" "This afternoon." Norma replies. "Why?" "He's alive!" Kim shrieks. "He's in Corsianca waiting for me! I have to go!" Kim dashes to the front door and puts on her shoes. "How are you going to get there?" Irene asks. "I ha--" Kim stops short. "I have no money; I'll have to hitchhike." she shakes her head, continuing to tie her shoes. Norma quickly walks over to the cookie jar in the kitchen and brings it over to Kim. "It's all we've saved up for; but you need it most." Kim stands up and looks to Norma. "No, I couldn't take this--" "Take it, and go find him, honey. We've saved this money for a good cause" Irene looks to Norma and smiles, "I think this is a good enough cause for me." Irene smiles and nods, "For me too." She steps up to Kim and hands it to her then gives her a hug. "Go find your soldier, honey; and once you have him...don't you ever let him out of your sight again." Kim smiles and places the jar into her bag. "I promise."

Those last posts were great you guys! Kim, yours nearly had me in tears. *Angie went back to the bed and breakfast to pack her things and get ready to make the trip to Italy. The sun was shining brightly and people were still celebrating in the streets. One young man in a sailor suit rushed up to Angie, grabbed her and planted a big kiss on her and then disappeared back into the cheering crowd.* [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/kiss01.jpg" src=" "] (I couldn't resist putting that pic in!) Ariane: *seeing Angie coming in* I guess you've heard the wonderful news, huh? Angie: Just a few minutes ago when I was at the hospital. I've got other great news too! Ariane: What is it honey? Angie: My two sisters are here and I've lost track of both of them but I think now I know where at least one of them is and Jim and I are heading out this afternoon to try and find her. Ariane: Oh that's great! I hope you find both of them. Where do you think she is? Angie: In a little town in Italy. It'll take a while to get there but hopefully I won't miss her. Also I just found out this morning that I'm gonna have a baby. Ariane: *grabbing and hugging her* Now that's definitely great news!!! Oh I better let you go pack *she said letting Angie go*. *After packing and saying goodbye to Ariane, Angie went to the train station and bought two tickets. By combining the little bit of money they had she was able to get a pretty nice compartment. Then back at the hospital she filled out the paperwork to sign Jim out and went up to his room to get him. When she walked in she saw him sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for her wearing a regular suit of clothes. His belongings had been sent from his original post to the hospital.* Jim: *turning to see her standing in the doorway with a surprised look on her face* What's wrong? Angie: Nothing, I've just never seen you in regular clothes. You look even more handsome if that's possible. Jim: Well I don't know how good I look with my leg in this cast and with a walking cane but you look very pretty in that dress, much better than in that bulky old uniform. *He leaned down and kissed her and then they left for the train station to begin their trip to Italy. Once inside their compartment, Jim pulled down the shades and locked the door. Then he sat down next to Angie and pulled her close. She ran her fingers through his soft, dark hair and then kissed him very passionately.* Angie: I've got something to tell you Jim. Jim: Is it something I can write in my diary? *he said slyly* (that's my fave line from The General Died at Dawn by the way) Angie: Oh definitely. We're going to have a baby. *The sly smile Jim had on his face changed into a big broad grin and he grabbed Angie and hugged her very tightly*. Jim: *looking in her eyes* We're really gonna have a baby? Angie: *nodding yes* *His eyes began to well up with tears and he put his arms around Angie again and held her tight whispering how much he loved her in her ear as the train pulled out of the station.*

Awwwwww, I was gonna use that line in my story about the casual clothes, too; golly, we think so much alike! I hope you don't mind if I use the idea later as well. *Sigh* This story is so amazing, girls. I'm going to be so sad when it ends By the way, I LOVE that image, too, Angie! It fit in so perfectly...

I was listening to a cd of a songs from the '40s and heard this one from Dinah Shore called 'Three Little Sisters' and it made me think of us and our story. Here are the lyrics.
Three Little Sisters
There were three little sisters Three little sisters And each one only in her teens One loved a soldier One loved a sailor And one loved a lad from the marines
For the three little sisters They were the fairest From Iceland down to New Orleans So said the soldier So said the sailor And so said the lad from the marines
And when the boys marched away The girls said they'd be true until The boys came back someday
Now the three little sisters Three little sisters Stay home and read their magazines You can tell it to the soldier Tell it to the sailor And tell it to the marine
This cracked me up b/c we love soldiers, sailors and marines and reading our old movie magazines!!!
