For those that have seen it. Did it deserve to win an academy award for best picture? Was it better than Sergeant York, Meet John Doe, Ball of Fire, The Maltese Falcon, High Sierra and They Died With Their Boots On?

Never seen it. I'm not really curious to see it, but I just want to see WHY it won over Gary's.

i have seen it and it is very good. its hard to choose on that one. if you dont like tear jerkers, then you wont like this one. it does have a little romance and walter pidgeon which is mainly why i saw it and thats the great part about it. i also looove roddy mcdowell, but unfortunately gary isnt in it. it really is a moving picture though.

I had a chance to rent this at a local movie store today and declined. I am not familar with Walter Pidgeon or Maureen O'Hara as nether one were in any Gary Cooper or Cary Grant movies. I did hear that Maureen O'Hara was second or third choice to be in Friendly Persuation but am glad they went with Dorthy McGuire who was the last choice. I am not a real big fan of any John Ford movies that I have seen and this was another factor in deciding not to rent it today. If they release any John Ford box sets, I will not be on the pre-order list for those movies as he is by far my least favorite director in all of classic movies. I chose to rent All Quiet on the Western Front and Harvey instead.

you would actually probably like walter pidgeon dan. he was a complete gentleman in real life and in the movies, like gary and cary. he did comedy, romance, drama, musicals, sci-fi, everything. i love him opposite greer garson in all their movies together. you would like how green was my valley though. its a great movie.

Well as long as he not like John Wayne or Ronald Reagan, I may in fact like him. I will have to give this movie a shot when I return the movies I just rented.
thanks, Dan

I just added Mrs miniver to my list of netflix movies and bumped it up to the top of my list. I looked up the details and a few things grabbed my eye on it. First it was filmed by William Wyler, a director at the top of my list (unlike John Ford) and Wyler directed two of my favorite Gary Cooper movies in Friendly Persuation and The Westerner. Also, reveiwers complained about it calling it a propaganda film, which is also what they said about Sergeant York. Also, it won six oscars. Finally Walter Pidgeon is in it and I can use this movie to determine if I like him without having to watch How Green was my valley first.

And of course it has your favorite person in it Greer Garson in what many say is her best movie, so really there was no way I could pass up renting Mrs Miniver.

well you will absolutely not be dissappointed by mrs. miniver. that is a great one to see walter's acting in. but if you really want to see great acting from walter pidgeon, rent madame curie from netflix. that one will really grab your attention with walter. and yes my fav greer is the fabulous mrs. miniver, so that makes it doubly wonderful. heehee! i cant wait to hear what you think of it dan! dont forget to let me know. i had read a lot about people complaining of the propaganda in this film, but they are looking at it from a modern perspective instead of a perspective back when it was made. i realize it sent the viewers a strong message, but it bothers me that people have to complain about something like that. you are right, it doesnt make it any less of a great film worth remembering. i had also read as much about srgt york and its propaganda. i still say they are two of the greatest films on earth. what do you think dan?

I can not comment on Mrs Miniver as I have never seen it but I will say that Sergeant York is 50 miles ahead of any other movie I have ever seen on Gary Cooper or anyone else. Of course I am a war veteran and a born again Christian who had conflicts between the military and Christianity my entire miliatary career. It finally led me to get out after 10 years of service.
Deleted John Wayne comments.

Well I just rented out from a local store that rents a small collection of classics How Green Was My Valley, Christmas in Connecticut and Roman Holiday.
I am not sure if Netflix will send me any more movies as my membership runs out on the 3rd and they they may not be sending me any more movies until they see if I renew for next month of which I am not. I have been getting 5 at a time for the last 2 months and have sent 4 of the one's back to them for this week. So if they do send any more movies Mrs. Miniver will be the first one they send. I hope they send me at least that one. I have a few more on my list of which I don't care if they send to me or not including Made for Each Other Jimmy Stewart, The private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex and Dive Bomber (two Errol Flinn movies). I already have his best 10 which are:
They Died With their Boots On Charge of the Light Brigade Dawn Patrol Gentleman Jim Dodge City Objective Burma Robin Hood Captain Blood Sea Hawk Adventures of Don Juan
He doesn't seem like the type that would have any more than about 10 good movies much like Bogart as I only like about 10 of his movies.

Roman Holiday is great, I love that one!! It was Audrey Hepburn's first big role and she was so good in it as they were filming it that Gregory Peck insisted her name also be above the title with his b/c he said she was too good not to be up there and she was on a best actress oscar for it.
I've recorded Christmas in Conn. (b/c I love Barbara!) but just haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

Theresa, I just did some research and it looks like another movie that netflix has of Greer Garson is called Random Harvest with Ronald Colman. I added that as number two on my list as Colman was in some Gary Cooper movies. At number third on my list is a western that John Mulholland highly recommends as a masterpeice on an equal scale to The Hanging Tree, which were both directed by Delmer Daves. Netflix has some other Greer movies but Random Harvest is about ww1 and a love story so I figured I couldn't go wrong with that one.
The others that netflix had by Greer were The Happiest Millionaire, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Julius Caesar, The Love Trap, Madame Curie and Pride and Prejudice. I read all the descriptions and Random Harvest seemed to be more for me. Also some Greer fans thought that this was her second best movie. Forth on my netflix clue was a another Gregory Peck movie To Kill A Mockingbird. I've never seen it but they say this was his best movie.
I have watched half of How Green was my valley and had to turn it off as i started liking it too much. It is about coal miners and both my dad, grandfather, and great grandfater were all coal miners. Anyway I will PM you my final thoughts on this as well as other thoughts on movies as I don't really feel comfortable discussing all my thougts on movies in the public forum.

Actually, I pm you all my thoughts on Greer Garson from this point on as I just don't want to post all that much right now on the public boards.
