Mary Viner lives with her father, a retired English captain in poor health, in a cottage owned by Percival Fream. Down the road lives Arnold Furze, a good-looking young farmer who considers it a privilege to work hard to Doomsday, a property that has built up since the war. Fream wants to marry Mary and make her a symbol of his wealth, and so proposes to her. A few days later, Mary and Arnold meet by accident near his farm, and a mutual attraction soon develops into love. She promises to marry him, until she sees his house and is disillusioned. On the way home, she meets Fream in his chauffeur-driven limousine and, dazzled by all that money can buy, she foolishly marries Fream, instead of the man she truly loves.Captain Viner is left in a nurse's care while the Freams travel abroad for a year. After her return, Mary realizes that money cannot buy happiness. At her first reception she learns, from Arnold, that her father is ill. He dies soon afterward. After the funeral, Mary returns to the old cottage and applies for an annulment. She then goes to Arnold's farm and offers to be his housekeeper for six months to prove she'll work hard for her man. He accepts.
Gary was GORGEOUS in this film. I loved how he was so sweet and romantic. Though he went from this: to I really thought it was adorable how much he loved her. She had to choose between true love...or money. Kinda reminded me of "Cowboy and the Lady"

It's refreshing to hear a guy admit it, Dan, lol. This was definately my favorite silent film as well; I just adored it. I uploaded a clip, too. Although it isn't very good because I was testing my knowledge on this new DivX product and it didn't work too well; I couldn't control what was being taped so it plays the first 10 minutes, but Gary's only in the last couple minutes. Oh well, here it is anyways. www.dailymotion.com/video/x1c8ao_doomsdayavi

Yes he only likes his westerns though But he did admit to me after watching it by himself that he really like Peter ibetson and even had my mom watch it again with him. So I think he is a sap for romance too but he just doesn't like to admit it

Awwww, lol. My little brother even liked it...and he's 12. At least your dad likes Westerns, though! I bought a Western book and they have a huge article on Gary.
I'll have to post that here; you will love it.

It is great movie. And great love scenes in it! So much tension! When I started watching it I didn't expect that I will love it so much!

Doomsday is my fave of his silents. It's such a beautiful story. It also doesn't hurt that he's just drop dead gorgeous in it! Of course, I say that about all his movies When I first saw it I was surprised at how sensual the movie was. It has some of the most beautiful love scenes I've ever seen in a silent movie. The part where they are kissing in the hay just makes me melt.

I feel the same about it. It was strange for me that the movie is so old silent, but I feel as it was a modern one.
