I bought a copy of this quite awhile back. I haven't seen many Gary movies, but I do love the ones that I have seen.
This is one of my favorite movies. What an absolutely beautiful story and one of the best war stories I have ever seen.
Except for the dying bit, I just wish I could have BEEN Helen Hayes in that film. I don't blame her though, being upset over not having an affair with Gary during this film, I would be too! lol

lol, I know; it was such a romantic/sad film. Better put a warning "spoiler" at the top just in case someone reads it without having seen the movie

He was VERY good as a romantic actor -- it was natural to him But he's amazing in comedies, too! -- Have you ever seen Mr. Deeds goes to Town? Or Bluebeard's Eighth Wife?

I have seen "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town". I loved it! Especially that poem her wrote for her. "Bluebeards Eighth Wife" I haven't ever seen.
Was the new "Mr. Deeds" with Adam Sandler supposed to be a re-make of the old "Mr. Deeds"? I've always wondered this but never really had the desire to watch it.

Yes, Sandler's version was a remake of the original. I haven't seen the remake and I never will b/c I would hate it to ruin Gary's version for me

Angie's smart. Just never watch it ever! Don't succomb to its calling!! -- PLEASE don't watch it! *Hangs onto Angie obnoxiously and wails* PLEASEE!! *Jumps back up and dusts off her shirt* Besides, it's a stupid movie anyways and it isn't worth your time. That poem is beautiful -- Angie and I are in love with it, right sis? "I've tramped the earth with hopeless beat, Searching in vain for a glimpse of you. Then Heaven thrust you at my very feet, A lovely angel, too lovely to woo. My dream has been answered, but my life's just as bleak. I'm handcuffed and speechless, in your presence divine. For my heart longs to cry out, if it only could speak. I love you, my angel, be mine...be mine"By the way, did anyone notice that Adolphe Menjou called Gary "baby"? lol, I found that hilarious. It took me a while to realize that it meant respect towards someone you like. Gosh, I just thought it meant he had a crush on Gary

Thanks for the advice! I'll steer clear of that one.
That poem is great. I love when he also is so nervous that he trips over that garbage can and all of that. It was just so cute haha.

I remember seeing previews of the remake of Deeds when it came out and thinking that it looked stupid. I vaguely was aware that it was an old movie but I knew nothing about it. I like some of Sandler's movies (Happy Gilmore, Spanglish, and his Saturday Night Live days) but I can't imagine him being able to pass himself off as a guy who could come up with that beautiful poem. *By the way, did anyone notice that Adolphe Menjou called Gary "baby"? lol, I found that hilarious. It took me a while to realize that it meant respect towards someone you like. Gosh, I just thought it meant he had a crush on Gary.* I thought that was funny too. Maybe he did have a little crush on him. I mean there's a beautiful shirtless Gary standing there right next to him. Man, I'm getting kinda swoony just thinking about it. Menjou's character is also jealous of his relationship with Helen Hayes and he tries to break them up, not so much b/c he wants her (or b/c he wants Gary - ha!) but b/c he wants to keep his buddy single so they can just keep up their carousing and partying ways.
