Here's an Imdb person's view of Random Harvest. I cant' say I know what the person is talking about in some movies called Now and Voyager but most certainly have heard of Casablanca. I like these comments because they don't reveal that much of the movies and also compare it to the beginning of Rebecca which is true as both movies draw you in from the beginning and you are hopelessly addicted to the outcome of the movie from that point on even if it would like run for 24 hours straight there is no way to take your eyes off of the screen for a second.
Imdb reviewer comments:
Along with NOW, VOYAGER and CASABLANCA, RANDOM HARVEST is one of the three most emotionally satisfying movies to ever come out of Hollywood's classic period, and a great example of the best that MGM had to offer in the '40s. Beautifully accomplished in every department from writing to art direction to cinematography to scoring, you have only to watch the first scene (so like REBECCA's) to be drawn in by it and then consistently surprised and entertained. And reading the 28 other comments here, I am struck by the unanimity of opinion -- because what makes the contrived plot believable scene by scene, and what causes the picture as a whole to live so warmly in the memory, is the unbeatable work from Ronald Colman and Greer Garson.
More than MRS. MINIVER, this is the archetypal Garson performance: her tact, gentle humor and intelligent restraint are in perfect service to her character and the story. If she seems too starry and aristocratic to be a lowly music hall performer, she is right in every other respect, particularly as an efficient secretary, society hostess and perfect helpmate. And this is Ronald Colman's best work ever. He should have won his Oscar for this lovely, subtle performance rather than for the strained work he did in A DOUBLE LIFE. Full of wistfulness as the amnesiac early in the film, there is real heartbreak in the way he says the line "I would have liked to have belonged to them" about the couple he hopes will turn out to be his parents. But he is just as convincing later as the confident, energetic 'Industrial Prince of England.'
Colman and Garson are the perfect grownup romantic couple: they make intelligence and maturity seem impossibly glamorous, and they embody the idea that friendship, loyalty and mutual respect must be at the center of every enduring love.

would you have rathered ronald colman to win the oscar that year or gary cooper's performance in pride of the yankees. they were in the same year and both were nominated. walter pidgeon was also nominated for his performance in mrs. miniver. i thought he did an awesome job in that one too. i honestly cant pick which one i thought was the best as i love all of their performances.

No I could never go against Gary Cooper in one of his greatest movies. This would be a hardest choice one for me. Normally I would have picked Gary Cooper every year for every film but in this case it would take more thought but still think that Gary might edge out a very tiny bit.
No I don't mind at all. Could you post a link to your Greer Garson forum again?
I have to go to work now but would love to check it out when I get some time.

Boy that was a tough year for best actors wasn't it as Bogart was in Casablanca that year as well. Who actually won for best actor that year? Probably some nobody in some aweful movie I am sure. I don't think Bogart won an oscar that year but I could be wrong on that.

I am not a big fan of the oscars at all as I think that the best actor and actress seldom win. How Green was My Valley was a good movie but should not have won any oscars for anything. There were far to many other good movies out that year.

sure dan here is the link to my site: greergarsonrose.proboards57.com/index.cgi?i look forward to seeing you on there. jimmy cagney won that year for his performance in yankee doodle dandy. i dont think he deserved it though. his performance wasnt on my list of favs for that year. i have seen that movie and didnt like it very much even though i love practically all musicals. i just cant ever decide between walter, gary, or ronald's perfomances. i would have made it a three way tie. heehee!

Well I was right then as Yankee Doodle Dandy and Cagney are not on my favorite subject list. I would say his performance in that movie did not even deserve a nomination that year.
You did leave off one incredable person in the reluctent Hero role in Bogart in his greatest movie Casablanca. So there are at least four actors better than Cagney that year and I am sure there might even be a few more that should have bumped him off the nomination list for that year. You see I told you that the academy awards is all a sham. I didn't like it then or now and never watch it on TV these days. I can't tell you what movies are out or who was nominated for what in last year's show or the year before.

While I do not like the movie Yankee Doodle Dandee overall or Cagney’ performance I must confess that Joan Leslie was wonderful in it but I think she is just wonderful in anything she is in as I really like her as an actress and as a person more so than any other I think. She also did some wonderful singing in it and dancing and was quite talented person in all areas. I will watch that movie many times just to see her in it.
Sorry as I just had to get this in but I do know I always seem to get so off target on all my posts it seems as they relate to the actual subject of the thread.

that is alright dan. i love reading all your posts even if they are a smidgen off topic. i like talking about everything. heehee!
i do think joan leslie's performance in yankee doodle dandy was a bit disappointing to me. i dont esp like her in this movie. i didnt think jimmy cagney's performance was even oscar material.
i love watching the oscars. mainly b/c i just love looking at all the exquisite dresses and tuxes. i love looking at all of them. and then i like just seeing who wins best actress and actor.

Yes I know as my mind races over many topics all at the same time. I will forgive you though for not liking Joan Leslie in Yankee Doodle Dandy. I thought she was cute in all of her singing and dancing numbers and seemed to have the same sweet character she had in Sergeant York the year prior. I heard she did some different kind of roles towards the later part of her career and not sure if I would like her as much or not but would like to see the movies some day to find out.

i did love her performance in srgt york dan. you would love the sky's the limit. she costarrs with freddy astaire in that one and dances a lot. i like her in that one as well as in srgt york. dont get me wrong, i loved her in yankee doodle dandy, but she was basically the best thing about the movie other than the fact that i like all the songs in it. i just dont like jimmy cagney.

I haven't watched The Sky' the limit yet but did like her singing and dancing in Yankee Doodle Dandy and do agree that she was the only reason I would watch the movie again.
