Was Cooper ever a villain in screen? The closest I can think of was The Hanging Tree and he is not truly bad in that, but I would mot really call him good. In this he looks good by omparing, because so many of those around huim are just so bad in the film. The Karl; Malden and George C Scott roles are just so vile. Anyone would look good next to them in this.

He didn't play too many villainous characters; if he did play any shady character, he'd make up for it in the end. Here are a couple possibilities: The Naked Edge Man of the West He really wasn't a villian, but you'll just have to watch every single one of his films to judge for yourself

I cannot say on Cooper,b ut I know the guy on Turner Classics was wrong on a couple other people.
In a screening of Once Upon A Time In The West he said it was the only time Henry Fonda played a villain. Fonda was bad in a western called Warlock as well.
Ditto for Joseph Cotton who was bad in Hitchcock's Shadow Of A Doubt, but he also played a villain a few other times and not just this feature, so the guy was wrong there also. He was a heavy in Baron Blood and especially in the underrated Sergio Corbucci western, the Hellbenders. He also made a shift from good to bad midway in Niagara.
Cooper again was not "good" in Hanging Tree, but looks to be because many of the other characters are just so repulsive.
I liked George C Scott as the faith healer in that one!!!!!!!!!!
