Great tribute to Gary. It took me a little while to get the title as it is almost 3 am here my time. I must add a happy birthday to coop myself here. Let see would that be happy 107th?
Happy Birthday Gary!!! ;D
Without wanting to ruin it for the many cooper fans on the other board. Below are my answers to the cooper trivia game you posted on the tcm board:
1. What two dates was Gary featured on the cover of both TIME and LIFE magazine? A random guess without really knowing would say 1941 when two of his biggest movies came out and he won his first academy award. I'm sure both magazines would have covered him for that.
2. How many movies has Gary starred in with William Powell? No idea as I'm not really sure who William Powell is? I'm a pretty narrowly focused person and don't always catch the names of all of Gary's co-stars. It must have been an actor in Gary's silent days.
3. What did Gary work briefly as before his first film work as a stunt horse rider? He wanted to be a polictical cartoonist.
4. Gary played six real life characters on screen - name those 6. 1) Wild Bill Hickok The plainsman 2) Marco Polo The adventures of Marco Polo 3) Alvin York Sergeant York 4) Dr Wassell The Story of Dr Wassell 5) Lou Gehrig Pride of the Yankees 6) Billy Mitchell The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell
Honorable Mention: 7) Brant Royle Bright Leaf. No real life character but according to the Bright Leaves documentory: (mental note I've got to rent this documentory soon)
BRIGHT LEAVES is yet another essay of his. This one follows McElwee as he traces his family in North Carolina tobacco country. Upon seeing an old Gary Cooper film by the name of BRIGHT LEAF, which follows a tobacco farmer battling a larger one, he begins to wonder if the film was based on his great grandfather, who had a similar battle with the Duke tobacco family. This leads him to interview family, tobacco farmers, Patricia Neal (co-star of BRIGHT LEAF), and the wife of the author of the book the film was based on.
(Fill in the Blank: ) 5. Gary turned down Alfred Hitchcock's offers of the lead roles in __________ and _________. He later said he had ______ (3 words) in refusing Hitchcock.
This is an easy one. Foreign Correspondent and Saboteur (two fantastic Hitchcock movies) He later said he had (made a mistake) in refusing Hitchcock.

Well done, pally!
The first is:
March 3, 1941 cover of Time Magazine; November 24, 1941 for Life Magazine.
Second: Gary co-starred with William Powell in 5 films, including: Nevada (1927) Beau Sabreur (1928) Paramount On Parade (1930) Make Me A Star (1932) It's A Big Country (1951)
I haven't actually seen any real William Powell movies, the only one I remember well enough is 'Nevada'. But he's the star of "The Thin Man" series with Myrna Loy.
