Only the Brave:
Cavalry Capt. James Braydon leaves Union Army Headquarters to visit his sweetheart Elizabeth. Finding her in the arms of a civilian, he returns embittered and volunteers for spy duty. He is detailed to carry false dispatches behind Southern lines where they will mislead the Confederate Army. At a ball given for Confederate officers by Barbara Calhoun, Braydon flirts with the hostess to pique the jealousy of Darrington, who loves her, and to subject himself to arrest, but Barbara defends him even when she discovers him to be a spy, and they fall in love. Ultimately he is forced to leap from a window to assure his capture. The Confederates act on the fraudulent dispatches, though upon discovering his deception, they order him executed.

Later, when Jim is recalled to the front and she is about to be court-martialed for her absence, she reads of his death; and to drown her misery, she opens the family chateau to entertain servicemen. Jim, only wounded, is sent to the hospital and miscontrues her gaiety; he tries to persuade her to return with him to Wyoming, and when she refuses, he returns to the front. On the day of the Armistice, however, he finds her waiting for him in the town where they were married.

Mary Viner lives with her father, a retired English captain in poor health, in a cottage owned by Percival Fream. Down the road lives Arnold Furze, a good-looking young farmer who considers it a privilege to work hard to Doomsday, a property that has built up since the war. Fream wants to marry Mary and make her a symbol of his wealth, and so proposes to her. A few days later, Mary and Arnold meet by accident near his farm, and a mutual attraction soon develops into love. She promises to marry him, until she sees his house and is disillusioned. On the way home, she meets Fream in his chauffeur-driven limousine and, dazzled by all that money can buy, she foolishly marries Fream, instead of the man she truly loves. Captain Viner is left in a nurse's care while the Freams travel abroad for a year. .

Deeds outwits them all until Babe Bennett comes along. Babe is a hot-shot reporter who figures the best way to get close to Deeds is to pose as a damsel in distress. When small-town boy meets big-city girl anything can, and does, happen.

A Farewell to Arms - ('32):
This first film version of Ernest Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms stars Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes. Cooper plays Lt. Frederick Henry, a World War I officer who falls in love with English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley (Hayes)-after first mistaking her for a woman of ill repute. Henry's friend, Major Rinaldi, is envious of the romance, and pulls strings to have Catherine transferred to Milan. When Henry is wounded in battle, he ends up in the very hospital where Catherine works. They resume the affair, which reaches an ecstatic peak just before Henry is returned to the front. The now-pregnant Catherine remains in Switzerland, sending letters by the bushelfull to Henry. But the jealous Rinaldi sees to it that Henry never receives those letters, leading Catherine to conclude sorrowfully that Henry has forgotten her. As the Armistice approaches, Henry makes his way to Switzerland, hoping to find Catherine.
