Strangely I don't like the book, but like the movie. In For Whom the Bell Tolls - opposite situation - like the book, but don't really like the whole movie. Only Gary and Ingrid Bergman in it.
By the way haven't anybody seen the different ending?

I just like Gary and Ingrid's part in FWTBT too. I think if they had edited that one up some it would have been a better film. It was a huge hit when it was released but it's not one of my faves. Of course it's a beautiful 42 year old Gary in color (I'm more partial to 40s and 50s Gary ). Of course I love him through his whole career. A Farewell to Arms is a beautiful movie and I just watched that one again yesterday. Originally Frederic March was set to play the lead and Gary was gonna do another movie (can't remember the name of it). They were friends and were talking about the roles and realized that they were better suited for the other's part so they managed to swap and Gary got the part in Farewell. He got great reviews for it too and it really showed everyone how good he could be. I get a little tickled though when I watch it b/c Helen Hayes had a big crush on Gary and wanted to have an affair with him (he was still single but she was married). He did not reciprocate her feelings though. I don't know of any alternate endings to either one of those though.

Yeah I do remember now reading that A Farewell to Arms had two different endings. It is weird that they would send them out and the theaters could decide which one they wanted to show.
Meet John Doe, which is my fave and the one that made me fall in love with him, had other endings where Gary died and the public wouldn't stand for that when they showed it at preview screenings so they changed it. I'm very glad they did.

I've read thet they have 4 and Capra wasn't satisfied by any of them. I feel satisfied with the ending we have now. I was alredy desperetly in love with Mr.Cooper, but if I have not I'm sure fall for him after watching John Doe.

This is an extraordinary film. I watched it some days ago and was crying. That means a lot `cause I don't cry so easily. It's not only Gary's and Helen Hayes`performance but also the brilliant directing. The music during Catherine's death scene is from "Tristan und Isolde", an opera by Richard Wagner which I like very much. That's merely the icing on the cake if I might say so, and wonderfully chosen because "Tristan und Isolde" is about eternal love as well. The only actor I find a bit overrated is Adolphe Menjou.

I didn't know the song from AFTA was also in "Tristan and Isolde!" I've been wanting to watch this movie again 'cause it was one of the first Gary movies I had seen (Deeds being my first and favorite ;D)

You're a natural born writer, Cappuccino. I'm going to snuggle up on the couch tonight and watch this movie; it's been almost 4 years since I had seen it. I'll be sure to watch for that song, too.
By the way, have you heard the Lux Radio programs of Gary?

Thank you very much, I'm flushing' No, I don't know the radio programme, maybe it's not available here? Here, however, is the music I talked about: Here is the English translation I copied from the operabase. Isolde sings it as a last greeting to her dead lover Tristan. ISOLDE How gently and quietly he smiles, how fondly he opens his eyes! Do you see, friends? Do you not see? How he shines ever brighter, soaring on high, stars sparkling around him? Do you not see? How his heart proudly swells and, brave and full, pulses in his breast? How softly and gently from his lips sweet breath flutters – see, friends! Do you not feel and see it? Do I alone hear this melody which, so wondrous and tender in its blissful lament, all‑revealing, gently pardoning, sounding from him, pierces me through, rises above, blessedly echoing and ringing round me? Resounding yet more clearly, wafting about me, are they waves of refreshing breezes? Are they clouds of heavenly fragrance? As they swell and roar round me, shall I breathe them, shall I listen to them? Shall I sip them, plunge beneath them, to expire in sweet perfume? In the surging swell, in the ringing sound, in the vast wave of the world's breath – to drown, to sink unconscious – supreme bliss!
