Molly Wood arrives in a small western town to be the new schoolmarm. The Virginian, foreman on a local ranch, and Steve, his best friend, soon become rivals for her affection. Steve falls in with bad guys led by Trampas, and the Virginian catches him cattle rustling. As foreman, he must give the order to hang his friend. Trampas gets away, but returns in time for the obligatory climactic shootout in the streets.
It was a cute movie, though being early in Gary's career, it wasn't AMAZING, but he was still beautiful and he played the part well...
*Swoons* That 'accent' was adorable ;D

Just watched this movie last night for the first time and find it extremly good. And Coop is great in many scenes (of course I prefer more close-ups with him). And how he deliver this famous line - great! I spoiled my impression a little because I first hear the radio Lux theater show with the same Virginian. It was staged long after the movie and it is much more calm (if I can say so) and this famous line hasn't the same impression as in the film "When you want to call me that - smile". By the way The Virginian was one of the favorite Coops films. But here it seems not very popular. I found the thread on the LAST place!

I love The Virginian and think it was a perfect film for him to do as his first all talkie. He easily made the transition from silents as his style was always the same: natural and easy going. My favorite scene is where he and Mary Brian go off for a ride and talk about Romeo and Juliet. It's so cute and romantic. It's also my faves of all the radio shows and I've listened to it so many times I think I have it memorized.

Hi Angie, I like the radio show very much, but it hasn't the same impression as movie. What other shows you hear? I also love Mr.Deeds show very much and Pride of Yankees and all others too. The Prisoner of Shark Island, Dr.Wessel and For Whom the bell Tolls.

I have all those same ones. I just love the accent he he has in The Virginian one so that's why I listen to it a little more than the others.

I guess I have bad ear. I'm usually didn't hear accents if they are not strong enough. For example I hear southern accent when I watch movies with Randolph Scott (he was the one who trained Coop on accent). I like this soft manner of speaking. In Taxes there is the same kind as in Virginia?

Gary's regular accent in movies like Along Came Jones and The Westerner sound a lot like a general Texas accent. Of course Texas is a big place and accents vary across the state. I'm from Southeast Texas originally and I have a more pronounced accent (kinda like Gary's) than my friends from the Central Texas area where I live now. Speaking of accents, I've always like listening to Russian people, it's a cool accent.
