Well I loved the 50's as well, and you're right everything was so happy back then, I guess that's one of the reasons also why i love "I Love Lucy" so much, not only cause it's Lucille Ball, but because you can see the way people lived back then and it was so much of a happier times

Yeah, the fifties were a happier time, when people weren't busy being worried about communists...and stars being black listed...and nuclear warfare...but also, despite all that, I'd still have loved to have been there too

i am totally obssesed w/ all these decades. i have gotten hairstyles ranging from the 40s curls w/ the little flip of hair on the forehead....to the 60s do, with flat hair except at the very bottom when it flicks up, and it looks so pumped up at the top. am i making sence?i dont know any hair terms..although youd think i would b/c i knoe every one of them. im ashamed of myself*pointing a finger at my own face and shaking it* i love buying and wearing vintage clothes. i design my own evening gowns and day dresses and the all look 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60ish. i have even made my own skirts that are all poofy and everything from the 50s. i love it. i always look for the perfect shoes to go with my outfits too. i esp. love the baby toe high heels from the 40, and 50s. i have a few pairs. its so fun to wear old things. although i have gotten some wierd looks from people walking by me, but i am in my own little world pretending to be in the 50s myself, so i really dont care what they think. yours, theresa

...........................................You make them?!?!?!?! *Dies* You are SO lucky, Theresa!! I wish I could sew, but sadly I have no talents whatsoever... I try and look the part, but women back in the day didn't have long hair. I was thinking of cutting my hair but then I'd flip out; I've grown attached to it...literally. I wish I could pull the 30's/40's/50's look off

Sure, but nothing I could really use! Sewing would save me a lot of money and time...but there are rarely any shops around here that sell any vintage dresses!
Is it really difficult to take up?

not really...you just have to learn the basics and go from there. read some books on the basics of sewing and it gets easier as it goes.

Kim, go to www.mybabyjo.com or www.pinupgirlclothing.comI haven't bought anything from there yet, but it all looks so beautiful! I was thinking about making my own dresses the other day, but sadly, I can't read a pattern and I can't sew a straight line to save my life, let alone cut one out either! My mother can sew but she never has time, being a charge nurse, and my grandmother can't read a pattern either, so I guess my only hope is to buy a pattern, figure it out and hope the darn thing turns out right lol!

well I would go crazy if I could sew ...lol because I have been dying to find vintage clothing from the 40's and 50's but I'm afraid i can either only find it on ebay or get it custom made. I have a lady that sews for me so maybe she'll be willing to make them for me for a reasonable price. But as of accesories like hats, shoes, etc. I guess I would have to find them on ebay or another online store. And hairstyles I don't know because my aunt is a hairstylist but I asked her once if she knows how to do 40's or 50's hairdos and she said no lol! anyway but yeah I'm also obssessed with the look and I really don't care what people say or think of me in the streets lol because I am willing to go all out.

not to worry ajax. when i first started to sew...i completely sucked at it, but i got better and better. as soon as you get going its really fun.
my grandmama just gave me a day dress she had made herself in the 50s when she was in high school loke i am now. it a peter pan collar red junie allyson dress, w/ the bottom part to the knees. its so beautiful, but goodnes knows i hava to loose a few pounds first...she always weighed 103 her whole life. imagine how tiny her waist was. i promised myself that i will fit into it in a few weeks. *wipes my forehead*. with that dress, i also inherited her sister's whit prom dress from the 60s. its one of those that has a really high waist and just drapes down to the floor, w/ a square neck. i actually fit into that one, and wore it to easter. everyone commented on it.
my next project for sewing is gonna be those pants in the 30s......you knoe those jumpsuit baggy pants that ginger rogers wore in follow the fleet w/ freddy. i absolutely fell in live w/ them, and said to myself that i had to make a pair. my aunt actually found the pattern somewhere and gave it to me. i guess she must love me. heehee

I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and just for something to do to kill time, I went to the pattern section and looked through the books and Simplicity has put out a line of retro patterns. I bought a Retro 1940's pattern and I'm going to have my mother teach me how to cut the thing out and sew it, however, when I measure myself for the size to know how much fabric to get, the bust will be like one size, but then when I go to the waist, it'll put me in a completely different size, and then when I do the hips it'll be like another size...so I don't know which size to make lol and I also don't know what all of the stitches are and such, but thank God for sewing machines.

hey red!!! thanx for the wonderful retro sites.
get a book on thew basics and if you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask me. i love helping, and its no problem. you measure your size on it by your regular dress or pants size. itll say 2, 4 ,6 ,8 or whatever your size is, different patterns have different measuring systems, so one might have 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on. just like at the mall. if the size doesnt fit in all places than you can adjust the size of that particular place by cutting the fabric larger or smaller.
