Do you have JASC PSP or Adobe Photoshop Elements? If you have either one of those you can colorize pictures.
If not, I just download JASC PSP, but not from the site because it's only a free trial thing, do it from somewhere like LImewire.

Yep no problem. Theresa and I probably colorize a little differently. But here is a quick little tutorial, but this is just the way I do it. This is for Adobe Photoshop Elements. I'm sure it would work with Adobe Photoshop though, as long as you have the same menus.
1. Select the picture you want to colorize.
2. Select the lasso tool.
3. Select a certain part of the picture. 3a. Say you picked a picture of a person and you want to colorize his face. Select the part of the face you want to colorize. I usually only select a small amount to see how the color will work. Don't select the eyes and the mouth or the eyebrows, just a part of the face.
4. You should have "marching ants" around that part after you have connected your little selection.
5. Click on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation.
6. When the little confirmation box comes up, don't change anything, just click Ok. You could rename the layer if you wanted to, but I don't bother, since in the layers palette you will be able to see the outline of what you have colorized.
7. Make sure the check boxes next to colorize and preview are checked.
8. Move the sliders until you get the color you want.
9. Click ok when you are done.
10. After you are happy with the color on the small portion of the face, click on the paint brush tool and carefully paint in the rest of the face, that way you don't have to keep using the lasso tool to select around tough spots like eyes and lips.
Remember that everytime you want to colorize something new, like if lips, or eyes, or clothes, you have to make a new adjustment layer.
We make new layers because 1. It doesn't work like JASC and I haven't figured out how to do it all on one layer, and 2. Because you can always go back and change just the one item without having to change your colors a million and one times.
I hope that helps. If not, I'm sure Theresa would be happy to help you, or I think I figured out how to colorize things by googling it.
Good luck! And post your artwork here when you're done! WE WANNA SEE!

JASC Paint Shop Pro is downloadable. I have a copy of JASC PSP 9, but now Corel makes it. If you go to the site it's only a free trial, so try someplace like Limewire or any other music/application downloading program.
Adobe Photoshop, which you did spell right, I don't think you can download that, I tried it once and only got a free trial thing of it. I tried it both from the site and from Limewire and got the same results. I sprung for that and paid the 70 bucks for it! I have Adobe Photoshop Elements though, so I'm not sure if that is the same thing as just Adobe Photoshop, but it does allow you to colorize.

Yeah adobe photoshop is downloadable but you only can try it for 30 days just as you can try jasc for 30 days too. As said before if you want the full version without paying for it you'd better download it from a torrent site. I myself prefer jasc though. I just can't work with adobe because i simply don't understand the program itself

I can work with both, so if you need help with that, then I guess I'm your person, and if you need help with Jasc, I guess you can ask either one of us lol.
Good luck!

I don't do it by hand, like as in on the actual picture? No, I don't know how to, but I did read somewhere that all that was really done was using a specific sort of paints and dyes over the pictures and brushes to apply them with. I'm not sure how expensive those paints and brushes would be to be able to colorize by hand, and I'd be so terribly afraid of ruining a picture. For now I'll just stick with the safe way of doing it!
