I LOVED it, David. Very well done! I thought it was adorable...
As the two pull up to a hot dog stand, Kim looks to Sue as if to speak but Sue shoots her a glare, as if to say, "Don't speak! No one speaks in his presence." Kim looks to Sue, thinking she may be off her rocker, but just fixes her attention back on the man.
If he's so high and mighty, why is he at a hot dog stand?
She nearly laughs out loud but then looks to Sue, who's face is dead serious, and only supresses it, continuing to watch the man. He hands the hot dog woman a card, who's name sounded like a "Melenia" ...or was it, Melinda? Kim shakes the thought away as it seems unimportant at the moment. Hearing a muffled 'thank you' from the woman, the man opens his car door. The woman looks at the card, reading its content and speaks his name, "Powers?" she asks. The man nods and she smiles. Her voice light and happy, she thanks him once more, "Thank you again, Mr. Powers". He steps into the backseat and slams the door shut as a quiet yet frustrated moan comes from his pursed lips. There's silence for a few moments as the car peels out from the curb. The man in the back sounds frustrated, angry, even. So Kim sits quietly, not wanting to disturb their silence.
Powers: To the studio, Sue.
Kim looks to Sue, as if to speak once more. "You know this guy?" But Sue sends a chilling glance over to Kim. Kim nods along, knowing this look well, she shuts up.
Geez, tough crowd.
Her mind races even faster now as the echo of the man's words ring through her mind.
Did he say studio?
No wonder the name sounded familiar.... This was the guy who's name is all over the newspapers! The director who's finally going to bring sound to the Motion Picture industry! He could get her into pictures! Kim tries to calm herself...
If only Strict Sue weren't in the car I could actually get my big break!
She looks around, out her window, for any sign of a rest stop.... She spots a tiny little gas station and leans in toward Sue, making sure her voice isn't too loud, she doesn't want to disturb Mr. HuffyPants....
Kim: Sue, could we stop off at that gas station?
Sue: What for?
She thinks for a moment, trying to come up a good excuse for them to stop...
Kim: I need a drink of water, my throat is scratchy.
Sue rolls her eyes.
Sue: All right.
The car pulls into the rest stop and Sue puts it in park. They wait for a moment then Kim looks to Sue.
Kim: Oh, could you get it for me? My leg seems to be asleep.
She taps on her leg harshly, laughing nervously when Sue lets out a long sigh and opens the door angrilly. She slams it shut and walks towards the store.
Now's my chance!
Kim spins around in her chair and looks to Mr. Powers...
The guy's sleeping! ...Who sleeps in the middle of the day?
Tempted to wake the guy, she leans forward, but draws back slowly and turns back around.
I can't...Sue'll get so angry.
She scoffs the thought away and sits with her arms folded. A few minutes later Sue walks back to the car and starts the engine. She hands Kim a cup of water and steps on the gas with force. The car jerks forward and wakes Mr. Powers. As Kim hears the "humph?" she turns around and looks at the man.
Kim: Mr. Powers...
Sue pulls on Kim's shirt, trying to get her to sit back down in her seat and leave the poor man alone. She pulls harder and harder when Kim slaps Sue's hand out of the way.
Kim: Oh, shut up, Sue.
Sue's eyes bulge and she sits straight in her chair, embarassed and turning beet red. Kim turns her attention back on Mr. Powers and continues.
Kim: Sir, I'm very sorry to bother you, but see, I'm very interested in the Motion Picture industry and I would--
Mr. Powers: Another one? Sweetie, I just gave the job to some other gal...
Kim: But I would only be an extra! I wouldn't even need to get paid much. I just want to be able to say I've been in a picture.... Surely you understand.
Mr. Power: Of course I understand, but--
Kim: Oh, please, Mr. Powers! It'll just be a small roll. I won't ask for anything. Honest, I won't!
The man looks at her face and nods.
Mr. Powers: All right....I think I could fit you in. Perhaps as a paper girl or a maid. Sure, sweetheart, I'll let you be in the picture. We're riding to the studio now, and I'll get you set up once we get there.
Kim shreiks with joy and thanks him 20 times over.
Kim: Oh thank you, Mr. Powers. You won't regret it!
The man shakes his head and closes his eyes, trying to get a couple more winks of shuteye before the long day of production starts in.
