This is the story of two friends, who left to the war when they were young girls. Now, many years later, something happens which brings it all back...
For Lauzi (Jane) its Dean. For Stella (Charlie) its Jerry.
It was just ordinary monday-morning, full of promises. Sky was clear blue and sun shined throught the window. When Charlotte woke up, whole house was still asleep. She yawned, tucked her hair and was happy because she had whole two hours to spend all by herself before kids were leaving school. Her husband has been abroad for whole last week so she could have few more restful days before he would come back. Maybe she would take the kids to movies when they finally had some time. She put on her morningcoat and walked still sleepily to the kitchen to make some coffee and to the mailbox to get the newspaper. She didnt take a look at it before she got a coffeecup on her hand and paper in another. But the coffee fell on the table when she read the main-new from the frontpage: Heroic nurse died in a planecrash at the age of 38 In the picture woman smiles at her. Charlotte knows her, but she doesnt see a woman there. She sees a girl. The same girl she used to know many years ago. And now she's dead.
Suddenly the whole world was frozen still. Clock stopped ticking, birds stopped singing, everything was just still and quiet. Charlotte blinks her eyes over and over again desperately, waiting for waking up from this nightmare. She blinks and blinks and blinks her big green eyes waiting something to happen. Emerald eyes, like her friend said long time ago. Charlotte: Jane.... Suddenly the clock starts ticking again. But it doesnt tick normally. It ticks backwards, faster and faster and faster. All the years pass by in front of her blinking emerald eyes and she isnt there anymore. She's at somewhere else. In the place she has almost forgotten. She's at home again. She is again at the shady and dark London, the place lived the happiest years of her life.... Before the war....
Jane: Charlie? Charlie? Wake up sleepyhead! We are supposed to be working here! Charlie opens her and sees Jane smiling like a little devil, her face almost in Charlies own. Jane is young, happy and very much alive. Charlotte blinks again. Nobody hasnt called her Charlie in many years. Charlie: Are you real? She tries to pinch herself, but she doesnt wake up. No matter how hard she pinches Jane is still there, laughing at her. Jane: Are you still asleep, silly? Come on now, streets are full of people with lots and lots of money and we are still here! Jane pulls Charlie up very easily althrough Charlie is taller than her. Jane takes Charlies hand in her own and pulls her friend with her, out the door and to the streets. Girls had a job as streetsingers and they were living quite allright. There are lots of people doing worse. They started their work at the early morning and sang late to the night. It was pretty rough, especially in opinion of Charlie, but Jane didnt ask that. And there were lots of good things in having a job. They even had their own little aparment with couch to sleep on. The couch isn't the best, thought. It has lost two legs already and is pretty uncomfortable place to sleep but it doesnt matter when girls sleep there together like little children. Anything doesnt matter then.
Jane Evelyn (always got mixed up with ”Eyre”) has known Charlie since they were 3-year-old toddlers and nobody couldnt seperate them. When they both were left orphans at the age of six they had become sisters, clinging eachother because they didnt have anyone else anymore. Jane was a beautiful girl with sea-blue eyes with little drips of orange in them and light-brown hair. She looked pretty innocent, but was everything else. Jane was always doing little bad things, has always done. When Jane and Charlie were five years old, Jane stole some money from the church collectingbox to buy icecream for both of them. Charlie felt really guilty and couldnt eat her own icecream, but Jane just laughed. Jane always laughed.
When they arrive to their usual corner Jane throws her hat on the ground and puts couple of coins in it. Charlie looks at her, raising her eyebrowns. Charlie: Why did you do that? Jane: Because I wanted to. Charlie: Whats the point putting money at the hat yourself? Jane: At least we can say at the end of the day that we earned something. Girls smile at each other and start singing.

When would they invent planes which could actually comfortably hold more than 3 people?! Jane Evelyn thought as her hip was once again painfully jabbed by the rather sharp elbow of the gentleman sitting next to her.She decided to take the polite approach... for now at least. "Hey excuse me, Mister, but would you mind just putting your elbow down a bit?" No reply.Without a moment's hesitation at hearing no instant reply, Jane made to shove the man's elbow off the chair's arm; but before she could, she suddenly heard a voice, and it was calling her name- Jane looked around the plane - no-one here even knew who she was. "Jane! Are you sure you should be doing that? It's not very... well... proper!"Jane closed her eyes and the voice repeated the words again, now with her eyes shut,Jane saw a sight which had been haunting and tormenting her for years ; a pair of shining emerald eyes were staring right at her.Jane felt her mind start to fly through millions of memories,of good times, bad times, through the past...a silent tear escaped her closed eyes as Jane whispered one word: "Charlie."
That was the final sound to ever escape Jane Evelyn's lips as she heard the plane's crew start dash around her, other passengers starting to scream, the high pitched sound as the wind lashed the plane. She opened her eyes, losing contact with the eyes and the voice in her head, but she soon realized she preferred to look into those old welcoming emerald eyes than to watch her real world descend into a nightmare. She did not scream as the plane hit the mountainside, she did not even try and protect herself from the impact, she simply kept her eyes shut and stared straight back into those emerald eyes.

Charlie: I can say 'thank you' in ten languages.... Thank you mister! Jane: I can wish happy new year.... but I will not. Thanks miss, have a great day! Both: But one thing I cant catch is morningnight lighting star....Thank you very much! It was midday and girls were doing fine. Lots of people were walking on their street and most of them dropped more coins in their hat. If someone didnt, Jane made a face at them or said something really rude. Charlie sighed and singing continued. Girls had lots of numbers they could play. They had happy songs, sad songs and funny songs which they made up when they sang. Sometimes they were singing songs they heard from the radio, and sometimes they took requestes. Sometimes they had a little audince listening and clapping at them. Usually audience were mostly drunk men or bums that slept in the dumpsters near their corner, but girls didnt mind. Not at all. Bums and drunkies needed music too. Sometimes people werent that nice. Sometimes old ladies told them to get married and become respectable citizens and sometimes gentlemen gave them looks they didnt like. Usually Jane screamed something for them and got over it. But sometimes girls were hurted by the commets, at least Charlie was. Jane havent never been that kind of girl that shows she's hurt. Sometimes policemen would come tell them to back off. That happened now too. Policeman: Hey, girls... Jane gives him angry look. Jane: Whaddaya want, pi.... Charlie covered Janes mouth with her hand and whispered her to be quiet. They lost two days coins when Jane last time said that word to policeman. Charlie: Sorry. What seems to be the trouble, officer? Policeman: You know that streetsinging is against the law in this area? Charlie shuttered and said: I suppose.... Jane sighed and couldnt say anything because Charlies hand is still at her mouth. Policeman just smiles at them. Policeman: But my area stops right here, so I can turn my back if you want to continue. Girls look at the officer, stunned. Charlie takes her hand of Janes' mouth and then they both smile at him. Jane: Hey, thanks honey. You're allright for a cop. Charlie: Thank you very much, you are too kind to us officer. Poliman just grins and says: Its allright girls, carry on. So girls carry on and sing pennies from heaven especially dedicated to the kind officer. Sometimes girls were lucky. Sometimes people payed them to sing something special, and they paid that much they could buy special treats: cakes ( ), candy, even a recordplayer. Once they sang lovesongs at the wedding and got payed hundred pounds for that. They lived for a long time with that money. When sun finally started to get down and evening started to get dark they stopped and went near the theaters and nightclubs because many people were gathering there. They didnt have too much money, but they were getting along really well at the times. And that was all you could ask for in situation like theirs. Althrough they didnt had much, they were happy. But little they knew..

Charlie slowly forced herself to open her eyes, she had been woken up by someone singing, it was Jane as she made their breakfast and danced around their tiny apartment with as much energy as though it was a gigantic dancing hall.
Charlie:*rubs eyes and yawns*Hey Janey, what time is it?
Jane:Well, good morning,you! It's nearly eleven...I think...
Charlie: Wait jusa' sec... *Charlie looked around the room, clearly looking for something* I might be half-asleep, but where's our new clock gone?!
Jane:*looks as innocent as an angel who has just polished her halo*
Charie:*looks at Jane*Nice outfit you got there.Expensive?
Jane:No,actually, it was very che-
Charlie:Must have been very cheap I'd say, that clock can't have sold for much!
Jane:Look,Charlie I needed a new outfit! I've got nothing to wear! You gotta understand-
Charlie:Jane Evelyn,I just don't what to do with you!
Jane:How about some music, huh? *Jane lent over Charlie's shoulder to turn the radio on*
Charlie loved music, and Jane often used it as a way of distracting her from whatever mischief she had been up to.
Jane: C'mon, let's dance!
Jane saw Charlie's annoyance disappear instantly - she loved that about Charlie; no-one else could put up with her,but Charlie had a way of simply accepting what she was like as a person.
Charlie: *giggles and joins Jane in a mock tango to the music*Who's leading?
Jane:I will!I will!
Charlie: *Gives a loud sigh as if bored*
Jane:What?
Charlie: Well, you're not exactly Gary Cooper, are you?!
*Jane gives Charlie a playful shove and they both laugh as they continue to dance with even more energy*
Jane:I bet you can't do a-
"We interrupt this broadcast to bring a special speech from the Prime Minister." A clear, sharp man's voice cut off the music, and the girl's fun.
Charlie:Hey,what's this all about?
"I am speaking to you from the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street." Both girls recognized the voice of the Prime Minister, and both noticed a difference in his voice...
He continued, his voice mixing with static of the radio: "This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that, unless we hear from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany. "
*Both girls stare at each other in silence - too shocked to speak,to move or to hardly breathe; the rest of the Prime Minister's speech does not enter their ears, they don't want to hear it.*

Girls are too shocked to do anything. The voice at the radio has changed meaningless nonsense they cant even hear anymore. The happy mood they had couple of minutes ago was gone, and everything was still. They both sat on the couch and without saying a word, lay down. Jane in her new dress, and Charlie still in her nightclothes.
Neither of them says a word, but Charlie starts to shake like she has fever. Jane puts her arms around Charlie and makes her warm nest with her feet. They cling each other like little kids and neither of them doesnt know what to do. After couple of minutes Charlie whispers with broken voice: Im scared. Jane: Hush Charlie, everything is gonna be all right. Thats what Charlie loves in Jane, she is always the brave one. She doesnt get scared or doesnt panic. She makes Charlie feel like shes safe and everything would be allright. But it isnt, it isnt, it isnt.
Finally they both get their voices back. Neither of them doesnt get up, they feel like someone has stolen the energy from them. Charlie: What are we goíng to do? We dont have a job anymore. People wont have any coins for us. Jane: I dont know, sweetie. I really dont know. That makes Charlie feel even worser. Neither of them speaks again in awhile. Then they suddenly hear official voice clearly from the radio: "Because of this horrible misfortune that has happened to Great Britain, we need every support from the citizens we can have. All the...." They wont listen no more, Jane becomes really stiff. Then she jumps from the couch, looking like a lightened idelamp. Jane: An idea, an idea! Charlie: How come I guessed that? What's your idea? Jane: We are going to be nurses!
...............Couple of minutes silence..........................
Charlie: I think I didnt heard right. What did you say? Jane: We are going to be nurses! Charlie: So I heard right, how funny...ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?! Jane: What are you yelling at? Its a great idea! Pure perfection! Charlie: So your solution for staying alive from the war is going right middle of the action? I admire your logic! Jane: Pwwth, stupid! Its perfect! We have free foods, real beds to sleep and the best of all: repectable job that makes us look like better people! *Charlie rolls her eyes* Charlie: I must admire your kindness. You are a real saint. Jane: Thanks, I know. Charlie: Have you thought of something, my dear angel... Jane: Whats that? Charlie: Its a REAL war. This is a serious matter, Jane Evelyn! If we are really going to be nurses, we should be capable to heal REAL wounded soldiers and know EXACTLY what we're doing. Jane: What are you talking about, Im a real live-safer! Charlie: Let me remind you from all the flowers and plants you have killed just this month... Jane: Shut up! I dont know whats matter with you. They are going to teach us, no harm done. And we can do some cooking, run errands and entertain soldierboys with our beautiful voices. Whats so horrible in that? *Charlie is just about to remind Jane that neither of them isnt a great cook, Jane forgets things and neither of them doesnt know a thing of taking care of wounded people. If somebody would teach them to be nurses, it would take heck a lot time.* Charlie: I... Jane: We are going. End of discussion. *Big sigh* Charlie: Oh boy...

***Several weeks later*** The girls, or rather Charlie, has researched an army camp in France which takes nurses for training; the girls have applied and been accepted - the army is clearly desperate! ( ) *Jane walks into the apartment carrying several heavy-looking bags and drops them on the couch* Jane:All packed then?I can't believe we're really leaving tomorrow! Charlie:Just about...*she stuffs some old photographs of her and Jane as kids into the already packed suitcase*What's all that you've got? Jane:These?*she vaguely waves a hand at the many bags*Oh, just supplies...hairpins,nail varnish,lipstick... - you know. Charlie:Supplies...Riiiight; did you even consider that maybe we might need food? Or um, maybe blankets or, I don't know, things we might just need for actual survival? Jane:*looks blank for a minute* Oh,yeah... that stuff... Charlie:What would you do without me,eh? I went out and bought it all this morning - I knew what you would think 'survival' essentials were! Jane: *starts to laugh and dances over to Charlie to give her a hug*I don't know,I really don't know honey. ***The Next Morning*** Having left their apartment, the girls have to carry their suitcases several blocks to reach the train station... Jane:Ugh...this...is....torture... Charlie: It's not...*she puts her suitcase down for a moment* ..that bad! Why didn't you just leave some of your 'supplies' behind? Jane: Charlotte, if I have to suffer, I want to look good while I'm suffering. Charlie:*sighs* Hey, look we made it, finally! The train station was straight ahead - although it could hardly be seen through all the shouting, jostling people running around the platforms . Jane:Wow, looks as though we're not the only ones who had this idea... As they reach their platform, the girls can see nothing but army uniforms ahead... Charlie:It's looks like- Jane:We're the only girls... on a train full of men! *Charlie has to grab Jane by the collar to stop her running and diving on the nearest soldier* Charlie:Easy, girl; you're a nurse now - remember? You've gotta be respectable!*as Jane lowers her head to sulk, Charlie flashes a smile at a nearby group of young men,who all grin enthusiastically back*

Suddenly the train whistles, girls and all the soldierboys must get on the train. (Girls and soldiers are first going to the harbour by train, then they will leave to France by boat.) Charlie takes her bags and starts to walk to the traindoors but Jane doesnt make a move. Charlie: What's the matter? Finally realized where are we going? Jane: Pwwth, no! Seesh, Im not gonna carry these! Charlie: Well leave them then! I already said that you can survive without your 'supplies.' Blame yourself for not listening! Come on, we must get going! Jane: No! Charlie: Whaddaya mean, NO?! Jane: No stands for that Im not gonna carry these. *Charlie rolls her eyes and sighs.* Charlie: Well, if you arent gonna carry those, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?! Jane: Dont yell at me. Im just gonna use my feminine sides to help us. *Jane takes a hold of Charlies bags and puts them on the platform floor. Then she licks her lips, lashes her eyelashes and takes one button of her skirt away.* Charlie: Jane Evelyn, Im not gonna stand here.... Jane: No! Wait... Charlie: WAIT?! WAIT FOR WHAT?! Jane: That.
*Group of soldierboys walks straight to the girls, smiling like there's no tomorrow.* One of the soldiers: Excuse us, ladies but do you need a hand with your luggage? Charlie shutters and says: Thank you very much, but... Jane: WE would GLADLY accept some help. These luggages are SO heavy for ladies to carry... *Jane starts to play poor little girl who doesnt know what to do, blinking her eyes and rolling some of her hair around her finger. Soldiers smile at them like big, strong males that help poor lady out of trouble. They take girls luggage and carry them to the train. Couple of guys are needed more when they start to drag Janes' survivalstuff.* Charlie *whispers to Jane*: What the heck do you think you're doing?! Jane: Oh, I am the bad person now?! I just arranged free luggage-carriers and thats your way thanking me?! Charlie: Have you thought about that opinion that THEY could have some sort of payingarrengement in their minds?! *Jane is silent couple of seconds, looks at the soldiers up and down and then smiles.* Jane: Well, I dont mind. They are pretty good-looking fellas.... *Charlie takes Janes ear between her fingers and pulls.* Charlie: NO! Jane: Awwwwwwww, everything fun is forbidded from me! Charlie: You are like a big kid, come ON now!
Whole train is full of soldiers that look at the girls like they are some exotic animals and talk to each other, smiling and laughing. Girls' luggagecarriers place their bags on their places and girls thank them with a smile. Jane is still little offended by Charlies motherly earpulling. Charlie tries to put her dress over the knees properly. Jane: Joyruiner. Charlie: Silly little kid. We almost missed the train because of you. Im pretty sure that you can see soldiers just enough... *She looks around them and all the eyes that stare at them.* Charlie: Ok, Im SURE of that. Sit still now and be a good little girl. When we get to the boatplace we must look the supervisor of the nurses. Jane: I bet she's a real cow. Charlie: Then you both get along just fine. Shut up and look outside from the window. Girls suddenly get quiet when they look outside the window. They were leaving London, place where they had both lived all their lives. Many memories pass by their eyes and without saying another word, they take each other by hands. Jane: Everything will be allright. Charlie: I want to believe that. Soon their home was just a little spot behind them, but girls kept looking until they didnt see anything. They didnt say a word, but they hold hands more tighter. They didnt have home anymore.

A few hours later, with a sudden jerk, the train came to a stop and the two girls are both jolted forward.
Jane:Ouch...*rubs her neck* Say, is this the harbour?
*Both girls look out the window at a grey, dull looking little harbour with one large ferry boat looking ridiculously big next to the small wooden platform it was tied to.*
Charlie:What a dump! At least we're leaving right away.
A strict, proper looking woman came up to their train window and started pointing at the girls and then at the train door.
Jane:Don't tell me...
Charlie:That's our supervisor *sigh*
Jane:Well, can't be all bad! Let's get going!*she jumps up and begins tugging down her 'supplies' and suitcase from the luggage rack above*
There's that courage, that fighting spirit again,Charlie thought as she was nearly knocked out pulling her own suitcase down ; there were no soldiers to help now, they had all got off the train at the army camp and would be walking to the harbour later to catch the boat.
Jane:Watch the step! *she bounces off the train steps almost crushing the supervisor with her masses of luggage*
Supervisor:Watch where you're going, please miss...Right, you two are *she scans the a clipboard in front of her* Miss Evelyn and Miss Taylorson?
Charlie:That's us.So what rooms are we in?
Supervisor:You two are sharing; and I'm afraid, girls, as you were the last of the nurses to reach the boat you'll have to take the last room left - on the soldier's level.I'm sorry about this but there simply wasn't enough room; I hope you understand.
Both girls:Oh, we'll suffer through it...
The girls run off to board the boat and find their room- the luggage doesn't feel as heavy as they think of the fun they're going to have...
***Later that evening***
The boat has left the harbour and the girls are relaxing in their room ; the sound of men singing can be heard through the walls...Jane is painting her toenails and Charlie is reading a leaflet about the their nursing course.
Charlie: I hope I don't get seasick...
Jane: *looks up from her now bright scarlet big toe* Charlie, you get seasick when you have a bath... What chance have you got on a ferry boat?!
Charlie:I suppose... Hey, it says here in here we get to go to dances!
Jane: Really? With who?!
Charlie:Justa' min I'll check... The soldiers! It says here it helps with morale; or something like that-
Jane: I'll say it helps morale! Oooh, you know, I saw a pretty nice lookin' fella on the way in here...Wonder if he needs any morale boosting tonight- is there a dance hall on this ship?
Charlie:Jane...What are you thinking... *Charlie is already suspicious*
Jane:Oh, nothing... well, maybe just a little informal dance...
Charlie:You know we're not allowed to arrange our own dances - there has to be a supervisor present at a dance - it says right here! *she jabs a finger at the leaflet*And anyway, you haven't got any music, any drink,any-
Jane:I'm sure that can be solved...

Charlie forgets Janes' little idea when they are shouted to join dinner with other nurses-to-be. For some reason nurses and soldiers are eating in different times, how that helps with the moral-part? When girls come to nurses cafeteria, everybody are staring at them like new kids in school. It kinda feels like it. Girls dont know anyone else but eachother and its all scary and new. They join end of the foodline without saying a word. They dont even say anything when they get their own tray which contains something that looks like oatmeal and raisins mixed up in stake. Charlie *whispers*: Who was the one of us that wanted to come here because of the free food? Jane becomes really red and whispers back: Aw, be quiet!
There are lots of others nurses-to-be so the girls had to look for a long time before they finally find empty seats. Other girls move little further from them and Charlie looks sad. Charlie *says quietly*: We are not going to get much friends, arent we? Jane: Doesnt matter, we dont need losers like that as friends. She doesnt bother to talk more quiet like Charlie. She speaks so loud that every one in the table hear that. Other nurses-to-be look little ashamingly each other and carry on eating. Girls start eating too, althrough Jane spits it up on the plate almost immediately. Jane: Bleh, this is horrible! How can you make us eat carbage? Charlie: Maybe the cook was as skilled as you are. Jane: Shadap, how I was supposed to know that.... *Girls look up when supervisor stands up and asks everybody be quiet.*
Supervisor: Ok girls, settle down...I was asked to remind you that we have certain rules between us nurses that you must remember. First of all, you all must know that were are now sailing with about 900 soldiers at the same ship.. *Some of the girls giggle and Charlie is sure that Jane said: No kidding?* Supervisior clears her throat and the room becomes silent. Supervisior: So we must remind that althrough we encourage nurses and soldiers get along together, you cant forget that you had come to work here. So you are closest to the soldiers when you are healing their wounds, understood? *Some murmuring and complaings and nodds. Jane starts to lean her hand and picks her oatmeal-stake with fork like little kid that couldnt have any cookies fors dessert after dinner.* Jane *whispering*: Thats what YOU think....
When girls are walking back to their rooms, Charlie is getting little dizzy and starts to get really green with her face. She leans to Jane, who doesnt even seem to notice. Her brains are ticking and tocking at the moment. She has big plans, but Charlie has to get out of way first. She walks Charlie to their room and helps her to bed. Jane: Take a little nap, Charlotte. You'll feel better then. She starts to tuck her under the covers and Charlie cant say very much. She is scared that her dinner will come back up. At least it feels like it. Charlie: Janey, dont...get us in to trouble. I know what you're thinking, and you cant get the dances without supervisiors watching eye. You'll get both of us fired from here before we have even arrived to France. Jane just grins a little and taps Charlies cheek. Jane: Dont worry, little Charlie. Everything will be allright. And if it isnt going to be, we are not getting caught. Charlie is falling asleep and murmurs: I dont....understand you.....Jane Evelyn. Jane: I know, I love ya too. Try to sleep now. Charlie drops off and Jane leaves her to sleep. She closes their door really quietly and when she is out at the hallway, she gruns devilishly. Jane: Ladies and gentlemen, its showtime!

***Two hours later****
Charlie slowly wakes up from her sleep...
Charlie:*whispers*Jane?Hey Janey? You asleep?
She started to hum to herself, twirling sleepily around the room, a peaceful smile on her face; maybe becoming nurses wasn't such a dreadful idea after all - it was definitely going to be an experience,at least, she thought.Approaching Jane's bed, she was expecting to see her small body as a rising and falling figure under the sheets...
Charlie:Where has she got- *slaps her forehead*She's done it. Oh.God.
***In the ship's dancehall***
More than a hundred soldiers and nurses are dancing,laughing,singing.. and drinking together, and in the centre of the room...
Jane:Let's go, fella's!
Jane is being swung from soldier to soldier, dancing wildly, and full of energy as music is played by several men on old looking fiddles and harmonicas .
Soldier : Hey, lemme' have a go!
Soldier 2: Out the way, bud! *the soldier stumbles and almost falls but he is caught by one of his friends*
Soldier 3:Look, Joe, don't you think you've had enough to drink? I mean that's pretty strong stuff you got there...And you ain''t exactly well-known for holding your liquor...
Soldier 2(Joe):Get offa' me,Danny!*he pushes his friend's arm off and walks out of the dance hall*
Jane:*Jane turns to Danny*Will he be ok?
Danny: Sure, sure...Joe's got a bit of a problem, I guess... He didn't want to join up - he's real religious- don't believe in killin... *he shrugs* but he always gets like that ; forget about him - another dance, Miss Evelyn?
Jane:Um, no, thanks .. *she turns to follow Joe out of the door*
Charlie:JANE.ELIZABETH.EVELYN.I'm.Going.To.Kill....You!
Jane:Now, Charlie, sweetheart... I'm not doing anything wrong! This is just a 'gathering'- some friends, some music; you know, just a bit of fun.*she takes Charlie's hand and pulls her along* See- nothing wrong here...
Charlie:But Jane! The supervisor said- soldiers and nurses aren't allowed together - not even for a 'gathering'! You'll get us fire-
Jane:But, look; we've got music... *she nods and winks at the several soldiers playing instruments who begin to play an energetic, tuneful song...*
Charlie:Janey! My favourite song!*Charlie's anger is lost as she remembers all the good times she and Jane have had out dancing while the very same song was playing...she almost begins to let herself forget what Jane has done...*You told them to play that if I came- didn't you?
Jane:*looks at her feet and then up at Charlie with a grin*Yup.Look, you go have a dance, I'll be right back...
Charlie:Ok- but be careful no-one sees you ; I'm pretty sure the supervisors are all asleep. See you in a minu- *Charlie is pulled into a dance by a soldier and she begins to dance, laughing and singing as she goes*
Jane:*smiles as she sees Charlie enjoying herself - and the soldiers all enjoying Charlie's company..*
Jane walked out of the dancehall and proceeded up to the ship's deck, where it was raining heavily, but Jane had this deep urge to find Joe,to somehow help him... it seemed almost like instinct...
Joe:Whaddya want,missy?
Jane gave a small jump, but immediately caught herself and turned around cooly as Joe came up behind her from the shadows of the deck.
Jane:*as casually as she can* Oh, just wondering if you were ok. Cold up here, isn't it?
Joe:Yeah... Wait a sec... what you meanin' by just wondering if I was ok?! Nuthin' wrong with me...*suddenly, Joe's eyes begin to bulge and his whole body begins to rock*You're one of them, aren't you? They all want to catch Joe... To make him fight,to kill... but Joe won't be caught, see? Noooo...
Jane:One of them? Lock you away? What are you talking about? Joe, I want to help you-
Joe:No! *Joe moves to hit Jane, who tries to duck... but in a split second a man appears out if the shadows and grabs Joe's arm*
Man:Joe, come on, pally - this young lady doesn't want to do anything to you, come on...Off to your cabin now, it's late, and you're tired.
Joe:Right...*his eyes seems to have returned to normal size now, and he has stopped rocking* Yep, I'll be off - real sorry, miss *he looks at the floor as he talks* Didn't mean no harm, honest, just, just a bit tired, like he said.*he nods towards the man*
*Joe, who seems to have been calmed by the man, turns slowly and walks off towards the cabins*
*Jane, who has been standing, dazed and wide-eyed, has to blink to return to reality*
Jane:Th-thank you...*suprised by her slight stammering, which she has never done before, Jane looks at the man's face for the first time...* I...I...I...c-can't th...th...thank you...en...enough...
Man:*laughs, thinking Jane has had a bit to drink too* No problem Miss, but I'd advise you to stay away from Joe anytime there's drink around; he doesn't take to alcohol ; and well, what with him not wanting to be here, fighting...killing *the man seems to lose himself in his own thoughts for a moment, but stops* He's alright really though.
Jane:*struggling to stop the stammering* Of course,I will. Can I buy my rescuer a drink maybe? Or a dance?
Man:Nah, thanks, but I'd better be getting to bed as well - we reach France tomorrow morning...And I'm straight up at the front line... *the man looks longingly at Jane's face, but she is looking out to sea- her attempt to look relaxed- before she looks around, the man has caught himself* Maybe we'll meet sometime again; it's been a pleasure to rescue you *he gives her a 'to-die-for' smile and walks away*
As Jane walks away back to the dancehall, the man looks back and smiles, he continues to watch her until she has disappeared out of sight ... His face became serious however as he thought: At least now I've got something to dream about once this hell is over...
***The Dancehall***
Charlie:*runs over, several soldiers still attached to her* Janey! Say...you alright? You look pale? What happened? The supervisor didn't catch you, did she?!
Jane:No, Charlie... nothings wrong... everything seems a lot brighter, actually...
Charlie:If you're sure *looks quite scared at Jane's dreamy face but shrugs* C'mon ; let's go show these fella's some real dancing!

Jane laughs and pulls Charlie with her middle of the floor. When they are surrounded by soldiers, she winks at her and starts to tap her feet. Charlie smiles at her. This was one of the ways they got money at the streets, they danced. Charlie starts to clap her hands along Janes feet, and the soldiers follow the rhytm. Jane smiles, taps, twirls and jumps all over the place, having the time of her life and Charlie starts to sing louder. Afther awhile the whole place is going wild:
Charlie sings to soldiers while Jane pulls one of them to dance with her. She rolls and jumps from the guys arms in front of him, taps, jumps and twirls like theres no tomorrow. Her hair flows around her like angels halo, her eyes sparkle like sea, she smiles, laughs and is happy while Charlie sits on edge of the piano, snaps her fingers along and sings her version of "Swinging on a star." "Would you like to swing on a star Carry moonbeams home in a jar And be better off than you are....."
Suddenly one of the soldiers runs in, yelling his head off: "The supervisors, the supervisors are coming!!" The singing stops. The clapping stops. Jane freezes in her place. Charlie stares her with her very own 'Jane-Elizabeth-Evelyn-Im-going-to-kill-you-very-violently-and-extremely painfully-mo-matter-you-will-do'-look. JAne starts to look like a read-eyed little rabbit, looking around her like a wild animal. Some of the guys start to move near the exits and Charlie looks like she's gonna cry. They can all hear the supervisors and lieutenants walking on their way to their partyplace. Everything seems to be lost. Suddenly Jane takes a hold of one of the guys, and screams as low as she can: "FIGHT!!" She punches the guy at the face as loudly as she can. That snaps something at the soldiers heads, they start a bloody fight while Jane sneaks to cover the piano and hide the drinks. Charlie is frozen still, she cant do anything. She just stands in the middle of the fight. Jane runs to her and pushes her away. Jane: You wanted not to get caught? Then run!
And so she runs. She runs and runs and runs. Past the fighting guys, past all the drunken groups and all the chickenly running cowards. She doesnt think she's one herself, she didnt want this in the first place. She cant go to main door, thats already blocked and soon the supervisors and lieutenants will be here and it's all over. She tries to open another door at the back, its next to a big stage. Sometimes there are arranged some shows at their partypoint, thats why the stage. No use: the door is busted. Charlie almost cries out loud, she bangs and kicks the door, almost praying it to open. She can almost see the ashame and guilt she is going to handle for a long time.
Suddenly a little hatch next to her opens, and someone takes a hold of her. Before she even notices anything everything is dark and someone tells her to be quiet. It cant be Jane, she's sure of that. Even her cant keep her voice that low. It has to be one of the soldiers. She listens her thoughts: is she scared? No, this soldier isnt going to hurt her. She just knows it. She hears thumbing, yelling and soldiers whistling. Then she hears the voice of that nurse-supervisor and hopes that Jane has got away already, because she doesnt sound exactly very happy. Luckily the supervisor was there and she was here, wherever it was. Pretty good question: where on earth WAS she?! And where was Jane?!

What had happened to Charlie?! If she had got herself caught..then..then it was all Jane's fault! Jane lent back on her bed and placed her head in her hands - Charlie had been right, she shouldn't have done it; if it had been Jane being caught then that was ok, but Charlie hadn't even wanted Jane to do it...
Jane: Charlie - it's my fault - it's always my fault.... But I'm not going to let you suffer because of me! *she stands up, feeling determined to rescue her best friend*
The ship had calmed down a bit now, the supervisor could still be heard screaming at some unlucky nurses and soldiers (who clearly had run fast enough, or in the right direction) . Opening the cabin door, Jane slowly looked around the corridor ; several soldiers were staggering back to bed, grumbling drunkenly. Jane stepped gingerly out of the cabin, and headed back towards the dancehall.
Jane:Here I come, Charlie...
***The dancehall***
Jane:*looks around the black deserted room, desperately trying to spot any movement that might be Charlie* Charlie? Charlie - are you here?
Falling over something soft, Jane looks down, scrabbling in the dark to find out what, or who it is...
The Thing: Hey! Hands off, you!
Jane felt a pair of hands around one of her ankles and instinctively kicked, hard. A small yelp and the small man (apparently that's what it was) let go of her.
Jane: *continues to walk to the end of the room* Charlie! *now getting even more desperate and scared for her friend ,Jane closes her eyes and murmurs* Oh Lord, if you can hear me, please make sure Charlotte Taylorson- quite tall, dark hair, green eyes... you know- is ok. She hasn't done anything - punish me, not her - it's all my fault - though you probably know that... But anyway, please help Charlotte! *opening her eyes , expecting to see Charlie in front of her but only seeing the pure darkness she sighs*
Jane reaches the end of the room, she can still hear the supervisor's voice, but it is far away - she knows she is safe.
Jane:*whispers*Maybe...maybe she's back in the cabin - yes, just sitting on her bed, reading a book, waiting for me to come back. That must be it.
Jane convinces herself that this must be true- it is the only way to stop the tears which are forming a miniature Niagara Falls behind her eyes. She turns and leaves the dancehall, entering the dark corridor to hers and Charlie's cabin ; feeling beter at the thought of Charlie being in the room, waiting for her...
Voice: Ah, Miss Evelyn, I was expecting you...
Jane:*spins round on the spot* Supervisor! I was just talking a walk out on to the deck - you know, clear my head? *the words pour out of her mouth without her even having to think - she's had to cover up so many times...*
Supervisor:*Stepping up to Jane until she is an inch away from her face, she hisses* And yet, you had time to arrange music, food, drink and also soldiers...Do not take me for a fool - I know what you've been up to; it is not hard to get information out of soldiers and nurses who have... drunk too much.
Jane:I- *before another excuse can escape her mouth the supervisor has grabbed her arm in a tight grip, her nails digging deep into Jane's skin*
Supervisor: No more, Miss Evelyn. We will arrange tomorrow morning...Now, I think we should go and find your little friend, don't you?
Jane cries out her apologies to Charlie over and over in her head as she is dragged off, back to the dancehall.
***Charlie***
Charlie: *very casually*So...what's your name?
Soldier: I just pulled you, without asking you, into a tiny compartment, in the darkness, a total stranger.. And you ask me that?
Charlie: Well, what else would I ask? 'Are you going to kill me?' or maybe 'Excuse me, but are you a murderer?' ?!
Soldier: No... I thought 'Do you come here often?'? or even 'Do you do this alot?'
Charlie:*giggles but then remembers what has happened* Well, are you a murderer?
The soldier laughed and Charlie suddenly didn't feel so bad about being stuck in there...

***Charlie***
Suddenly they both hear footsteps and supervisors voice. She sounds REALLY angry this time. Oh boy, she was in trouble now. She hears mumbling words, louder footsteps. She was coming closer. Charlie frozes completely. Maybe if she would stop breathing, the supervisor would go away.....Then she hears another voice and some words. "Please miss or mrs supervisor dont get Charlie involved in this. She hasnt done nothing." It was Jane! That stupid little thing got caught! She has got caught....and stood up for her. Jane...told supervisor that she hasnt done anything. Charlie regrets her bad thought so much that she almost starts to cry out loud. She has to save Jane. Suddenly, like reading her thoughts, the soldier puts his hand on her shoulder and says: "Dont worry. I know what we'll do."
He walks Charlie at the ladders were he pulled her down the comparment. Charlie: What...what are you doing? Soldier: Dont worry, I got a plan. Charlie: How...how can I know that it works? Soldier sighs and then almost starts to laugh. Soldier: Lets just say that it must work. Trust me on this one. *Charlie looks at him, up and down and then smiles a little.* Charlie: Ok. Soldier: Good. Ladies first. And get those tears runnin', you must cry like a waterfall when we get up there.
That wasnt so hard when they got up in the dancehall. First thing what Charlie saw was the supervisor on her white uniform, grabbing a hold of Janes' hand so painfully-lookingly that Charlie starts to sob, tears running from her eyes. Jane isnt crying, althrough she looks like she is going to do so soon: her face is red, so are her eyes and she looks like a lost little girl. Supervisors face is red too, but thats because she's so angry. She doesnt see soldier that well; he takes a hold of Charlies hand that it would look like she was catched. But he squeezes Charlies' hand so tenderly that she isnt that scared. When supervisor sees Charlie, she looks at her like she'd be some kind of disease. Supervisor: Oh, I see that the lost little sheep is found. Good work soldier. He doesnt say anything, just nodds. Jane looks desperately straight to Charlies' eyes and mouths: "Im so sorry."
Charlie cant answer anything, she is too scared for supervisor, her anger and way she grabs Charlie's another hand so painfully that she almost screams. Supervisor doesnt care. She just tightens her hold and hisses like a snake. Supervisor: You girls are in such trouble that you cant even imagine. Tomorrow you are getting questioned and you think that I'M horrible.... Suddenly she looks at the soldiers who is still so in the shadow that you cant notice him too good. Guess supervisor forgot him also. She looks at him and tries to sound more polite. Supervisor: Yes soldier, you may go now. He doesnt make a move. Supervisor: Why are you still standing there, growing on a carpet? Run along, I have few things to sort with these girls. They are charged... Then soldier speaks very calmly and looks straight to supervisor. Soldier: I think that you should let me handle this. Supervisor: WHAT?! He looks even more calm and repeats: I think that you should let me handle this. Supervisor: I dont know who do you think you are, but...
Now he stands out from the shadows. Moon shines straight to him and they all can see him clearly now, including Charlie. Supervisor looks like someone has thrown her with a big rock. She looks at the soldier, eyes as big tennisballs. Supervisor: Ca-....Capta-...Captain Lewis! Charlie looks at him, the most stunned of all. Suddenly she realixes to look at his uniform and the supervisor was right. That soldier had more medals than anyone else she has ever seen before. Did captain save her?! And what captain did at the party anyway?! Captain takes a hold of supervisors hand that has grabbed Charlie and takes it away. Supervisor doesnt make a move, she is too shocked. Jane looks at everybody, and she doesnt actually know should she laugh or cry. She decided not to do neither because she wants to see what happens. When captain notices that supervisor is in some kind of shock he gently removes supervisors other hand from Janes arm. (There are some pretty sore-looking marks at the place where her nales were.) Captain: Im sure that we can sort this out with girls now, supervisor Hammersmith. You have done excelent work by now and you can be sure that these girls will have to answer from things they did. The supervisor turns around, still looking like an horrormovieactress after the most horrifying scene. Captain Lewis and girls look at her back that soon disappears out from the dancehalldoor.
First there is quiet. Girls look at each other, then captain. Then Jane cant take anymore, she starts to laugh at the same as tears are running down her cheeks. Charlie starts to giggle, althrough she is still scared. And captain cant help but chuckle too. But when girls get enough with lauhing, they start to cry again. Charlie is crying like a little girl: mouth open and tears running like waterfalls. Jane doesnt cry out loud, but she is blinking her eyes as well. They run to hug eachother, clinging again like little children. Jane: Im sorry, Im so sorry Charlie. Charlie: That doesnt matter, its ok. Captain is still standing at his place, looking girls with a little grin. Captain: First you are laughing like crazy. Now you are crying like babies. You crazy girls...I still have get you a punishment, you know.
But girls dont care, not that time. They were safe. They could have the worst kind of punishment now but it doesnt matter anymore. They were safe, saved by the heroic captain.

***The next Morning***
The girls are in their cabin - Charlie is already up...
Charlie:Up you get,Janey!!
Jane:Huh...*she rolls over to go back to sleep*
Charlie:*starts to jump on Jane's bed* Jaaaaaaaaane! Up,get up - the ship's docking in half an hour!
Jane:*muffled*Yeah, and I'm docked too - in bed! How come you're up so early - you're normally the one I have to pull ou-
Charlie:C'mon, Janey, after the trouble we, or should I say you, caused last night, I bet the supervisor would grab any chance to get us kicked outta here, and being late would be another mark on our record...
Jane:Fine... I'm getting up... *sigh*
Charlie:I'll start packing, you go take a shower.
Jane:Ok - but remember to pack my survival essentials - my nails are already chipped!
Charlie:*shakes her head* What am I gonna do with her...a nurse, calling nail varnish 'essential'...Well I doubt that will heal any soldiers...Unless they want scarlet nails... *smiles to herself*
***And half an hour later***
The ship has docked, and Jane and Charlie are lining up with the other nurses, preparing to leave for their training camp. The soldiers are heading in the opposite direction. Some were going to a nearby camp and others... to the frontline.
Supervisor:Now,ladies, as you all know, we have decided to forget last night's events and-
Jane:Huh, so they're just punishing us cos' they feel like it?
Charlie: *nudges Jane and hisses*Shuddup! *Jane scowls*
Supervisor: However, as we do not want this to happen again, I am warning you now - the soldiers' camp is only across the road to our training camp.If I find ANY nurses even attempting to contact any soldiers...They will be punished - and it will not be forgotten.
*Jane and Charlie both sigh, each thinking of a different soldier...*
The nurses all climb into uncomfortable trucks to be taken to their camp.Jane and Charlie sit in silence, leaning on each other's shoulders as they think of their years of joy in London - and what is to come here in France.
***The camp***
The girls have finally climbed out of the sweaty, dirty truck and are approaching their sweaty, dirty rooms.
Jane:Ugh...This place really stinks *she holds her nose*I think I preferred the truck!
Charlie:Well, this is gonna be home for a while - so better start likin' it - sis!
*The supervisor comes up behind Charlie*
Supervisor:Yes, you better start 'likin' it. Proper speech please, Miss Taylorson- you are not street singers anymore - so please do not speak like one.
Charlie:Yes, Miss.
Supervisor:Good. Now, Miss Evelyn, your 'extra' work begins tomorrow at 6am - sharp; report directly to my office - across the yard to your room here. Do not be late.*She walks off*
Jane:'Extra work'! Why doesn't she just say punishment? Or 'torture' even? That's what it'll be!
Charlie: Don't complain, Jane ; just get on with it and it'll all be done. This our room! *She pushes the door open dramatically-it gets stuck*
Jane:Oh, brilliant. Here- *she tries to push the door-it doesn't move* Gimme' a hand Char-
*Both girls shove - the door doesn't move*
Jane:Right, one last shove...
Charlie:One...Two...Three...Push!
*The door flies open and both girls fall on the floor*
Jane:*Looks around the room* Yup, I preferred the truck!
Charlie:*drops all her bags on one of the tiny, metal beds and walks to the window*The soldiers' camp really is near - look, you can see it from he-
Jane:What?! *she runs over* That close huh...
Charlie:Jane... No more trouble - you've already got 'extra' work - you don't want 'extra extra work'!
Both girls continue to stare out the window...Uh-oh...

Jane: Oh my...Did you notice that you can almost see at their showers from here? Charlie. Jane Evelyn, you are the most twisted-minded, worst-behaved....Can I have a peek? *Jane starts to laugh.* Jane: Gotcha' little miss goody-goody two-shoes! I was only kidding, unfortunately. Now lets get going, we have to change to our official nurseuniforms. Charlie: Uniforms? Its like being back at school! Jane: Yeah, especially at the lockerrooms, this place stinks exactly the same. Charlie: Jane, the lockerroom didnt stink until you threw couple of dead frogs we used at the biologyclasses to one of the lockers and then forgot them for six months. Jane: I had to put them somewhere to wash my hands. How could I know it was so friggin' important not to put frogs in the lockers! Charlie: *sigh* I know, its a mystery. Ok, get dressed miss Evelyn. And watch your language! We are not at the streets anymore, unfortunately. Jane: Oh Im sooorry miss Taylorson, I forgot that we are now respectable citizens doing something valuable to society..I dont even know what that means! Charlie: Im suuure of that. Ok, lets get dressin'..uhm...dressing!
Girls get dressed on their white nurseuniforms and try not to laugh when they are finally ready. Neither of them doesnt know what should they do next. They have never less looked more strange. They are completely different in their plain white dresses and nursehats than those colourful dresses, scarfs and tight pants they used while singing. Jane: And I thought that I would dress white only when I'd get married. Charlie: And thats going to happen.... Jane: Never. Or maybe... Charlie: I dont wanna hear it. I'd be a terrible bridesmaid. Ok, we have our uniforms and our white shoes...Ok, I think thats everything. Lets get going!
On the way to the mainhall where girls should get their worktimes and -places, Jane hymns quietly. Im looking for something in white.. Charlie: *sigh* Remember, this was your idea. Jane: At least we dont get attention ourselves. Charlie: Oh dont worry, everybody knows our names by now. Especially yours if I might add. Jane: You sound like it would be a bad thing! Charlie: I have no idea why....Come on, get going. We cant be late from this if we want to keep our white nurseuniforms. Jane: Yeah, that would be a terrible thing...
***Main hall***
When girls get to the mainhall, everybody else are there already. All you can see is white. Supervisor has stood up in the front and luckily doesnt notice girls when they tiptoe to their seats. The way supervisor works is really simple: she says girls name and tells her workingplaces and times. Supervisor: Ok, what we have until now....A's, B's, C's, D's, Now E's...Miss Helene Eagle works at the main nurses office between nine o'clock and ten. Lets see, Eagle....Who's next? Oh yes, how could I forget? Miss Jane Evelyn Jane: Yikes.....

Silence falls, the whole hall can be seen focusing on the Supervisor...
Supervisor:You will report tomorrow morning at 6am *she says quietly, but everyone still hears* after your 'extra' work, to the main training rooms and you will remain there until 9pm. Lucille Freener-
The other nurses all start chattering disappointedly - they had wanted a more 'interesting' punishment; they also want to know how Miss Evelyn has got away so lightly...
Jane:Great,that's juuust great...
Charlie:It would have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for Captain Lewis!
Jane:Yeah I guess *she looks up at Charlie* Hey, you're blushing...You like him- don't you?!
Charlie:*very seriously*No- of course not. Now is NOT the time.
Jane:Charlotte Taylorson...If I know you-
Charlie:*puts a hand across Jane's mouth*Shhh-
Jane:*under Charlie's hand*Hay,fqisud gif ysusjaj! *Charlie lets go*Fine.
Supervisor:Susan Takenton....
Jane:You next I reckon - wonder where you'll end up...
Charlie:Well they gotta- I mean they have got to- train me first...
Supervisor:Charlotte Taylorson....hmmmm....*she looks down her clipboard*....You will be doing some 'extra' work from 8am to 9am,for this you will go to my office. Then at 10am, you will go to the training tent to begin your nursing course.Anna Urquehartz...
Jane:Looks like you still got a bit of 'extra' work then...
Charlie: Captain Lewis couldn't have just let me get away with it completely- he is a captain - it's his duty-
Jane:I just thought he would want to follow his duty as a man, and ask you out! *Charlie gives Jane light shove and laughs as they turn to leave the hall and go back to their rooms.
*As they cross the yard, the girls see a large group of soldiers gathering together; they are carrying their full packs and are obviously about to leave*
Charlie:*Freezes*
Jane; Anyway, like I said, the training shouldn't be too- Hey, Charlie, where are y-*she sees what Charlie is looking at*
Charlie:They all...look so cheerful...
Jane:I know. It's cold, we should go inside..*takes Charlie's arm and starts leading her into their room*
***The next morning***
*alarm clock rings*
Jane:Oh for- *she falls out of bed* Ouch!
Charlie:*asleep*Hmm?What did you say, Captain?
Jane:So she doesn't like him,huh?
Jane washed, dressed and set off with a heavy heart to the Supervisor's office for her 'extra work'.It was a misty, damp day and it was still dark at 6am when she knocked on the Supervisor's door...
Supervisor:Enter.*Jane pushed the door open with one finger, not wanting to have to start work* Now,now Miss Evelyn, we must not be so scared-
Jane:*in a bored voice*I'm not scared.
Supervisor:That's right. We will start with the registers of past soldiers to have been treated here.* she points a tiny wooden chair and desk*.
Jane:But that's absolutely tiny ! I couldn't even-
Supervisor:Sit.*Jane drops herself onto the chair, and nearly yelps as a sharp nail cuts the skin on her left arm*Here. *the supervisor drops a gigantic pile of books so tall that Jane can't see over them*
Jane:*under her breath* I will not shout,I will not shout, I will NOT.*to the Supervisor*So what do I do with them?
Supervisor:*in mock horror* You re-write them, of course!
Jane:All of them?! *She opens a page of the many books and sees over a hundred names on the one page*
Supervisor:Yes.ALL of them.*she smiles smugly at Jane* Begin.
***Charlie***
Charlie pulled her thick jumper over herself - from what she had seen out the window, it was an awful day.She opened the door and found she was right - it was freezing.Hopefully her punishment would be indoors...
Charlie:Wonder how Jane's 'extra' work is going...It can't be anything too bad...She'll probably have to peel a few potatoes or something...*she smiled as she thought of Jane complaining about her chipped nail varnish* The poor thing...

****Jane****
Abler, Abney, Apeson...Oh, it was Absen..... Now she has to write full page again. But its still pretty funny, Apeson.... Jane has been writing for about two hours now, and she thinks that her arm is gonna fall off soon. She hasnt even passed the A's yet! Why so many soldiers are killed already?! Couldnt they wait that Jane has got away from her punishment?! Really selfish to die like that.
Jane's fingers are bright red and she thinks that she never cant get the pencil from her arm again. She has to live her whole life pen stuck between her fingers.... Suddenly someone knocks at the door. Supervisor says 'enter' and Charlie walks in the room in her white outfit. Girls wink at eachother shortly before Charlie looks at the supervisor who looks as cheerful as always. Charlie: You wanted to see me, supervisor Hammerhe.....Hammersmith. Jane chuckles but puts her hand over her mouth and keeps on writing. Supervisor gives her an angry look. Supervisor: Yes miss Taylorson. I indeed wanted to see you. Tell me my dear miss, are you a good housekeeper? *Jane tries to behave, altrhough its hard. Charlie tries not to smile. Their flat was always like a bom has exploded, they didnt know a thing about keeping the house.* Charlie: Whaddaya....Uhm, what do you mean supervisor? Do you mean cleaning or cooking? Supervisor: I mean cooking.
Charlie: Well....I...I...can make some easy foods and light houseworks, I guess.... Supervisor: Excelent. Im sending you to the main kitchen, where you cook breakfest to the soldiers. Understood? Charlie: Well, ma'am.....miss....supervisor....I guess you didnt heard what I was sayin'. Im not a very good cook. Supervisor: I heard that. I heard that very well. Why do you think that Im considering this a punishment? And you are not "sayin'" anything miss Taylorson. You are SAYING like a normal, respectable citizen. Charlie: *sigh* Yes supervisor. Supervisor: Good. I have made all the arrangements already, you have to report at the kitchen now. Charlie: Yes supervisor. Uhm...where is it? Supervisor: Its at the soldiers side, the biggest building after the main gate. *Both girls freeze still. But then Jane starts to look desperate and cant help screaming.* Jane: NO FAIR!!!
Supervisor: Miss Evelyn! You have no any right to say anything until I give you permission! Start doing your chores and mind your own business! Yes miss Taylorson, I know its highly unusual that these sort arrangements are done, especially at situation like yours, but believe me it wasnt my idea. One of the higher soldiers personally asked you to do your extra work there that you can be watched more properly. Believe me, if I would have decided you would be already cleaning nursehome like a slave! *Jane mumbles some swearwords and mouths Charlie one word: Captain.* Charlie nods more to Jane than supervisor and says: Y-....Yes supervisor. Supervisor: But I must warn you miss Taylorson. This is a punishment, and I expect that you work whole time you spend at the soldiercamp. Just work, and thats it. One bad word from the soldiers side and you are soon sitting at the same table with miss Evelyn, re-writing twice the amount than she does! *Jane shakes her had and keeps on writing, even more annoyied.* Charlie: I understand, supervisor. Supervisor: Good. Off you go. So Charlie turns around and leaves Jane *thinks*: Life isnt fair.

***Charlie***
As Charlie runs through the now pouring rain, she can't help but think about who she might meet at the soldier's camp...
Charlie:I wonder if....he'll be there? But maybe captains don't eat with the other soldiers... But why wouldn't he...? I mean, he is still a soldier... But maybe...Argh! Shut up, brain - it doesn't matter if he's there or not - even if he is there, I can't exactly talk to him from the kitchens!
*She reaches the door to the kitchen and pushes it open, expecting the room to empty *
As soon as she opened the door, she knew she had gone to the wrong part of the building... Over 300 soldiers were sitting, waiting for their breakfast, all chatting happily to each other.
*the door slams in the wind behind Charlie*
Every single soldier stopped, turned and stared - directly at Charlie. She tried not to blush and looked around the room for the door to the kitchens-it was right at the other end of the canteen - she would have to pass each table of soldiers to reach it...
Charlie: Here I go...*she walks as quickly as she can past the soldiers*
Soldier:*whistles* Woweeee... Hey, doll-face, how's about it?
Soldier 2:Now that's what I call breakfast! *the soldiers burst into laughter, all still drooling over Charlie- who has now reached the door to the kitchens*
Charlie:*shudders* Jane would have loved that...
Man:You must be the new cook?
Charlie:Um, I guess so... The thing is, I, erm, I can't cook.
Man:No problem miss. You think these men are here for fancy cuisine? You can cook beans?*Charlie nods* Bacon? *she nods again* Well there you go! I'll leave you to it.
Charlie:Where do I find every- *the man has already disappeared before Charlie can ask anything* Right. Food. Fridge?
Charlie dashed around the kitchen, desperately looking for anything to cook- she didn't like the thought of hundreds of hungry soldiers waiting for her to produce food for them...
Charlie:*after several minutes of searching, with no results* This ain't- I mean is no- oh, who am I kidding - I'm a street singer! This really ain't good! *she sits on the kitchen work-top and sighs*
The kitchen door opened...
***Jane***
Jane:Um, Supervisor? Can I just go get a drink of water?
Supervisor:That's 'may I' Miss Evelyn, and no, you may not.How many pages have you completed now?
Jane:Nearly a 100 Supervisor!
Supervisor:Is that all? I suggest you speed up, Miss Evelyn, unless you wish to return here for the next few years...
Jane:*swears under her breath* Huh, I bet Charlie's having a great time with all those soldiers and her captain... I don't have anyone round he-
Jane's eye is caught by a group of soldiers carrying what looks like a stretcher through the rainstorm outside- the shape of a body is lying on top, shaking violently.
Jane:Supervisor- are there more injured soldiers coming in?
Supervisor:Of course - it is a war Miss Evelyn - men will be injured...*her voice softens as she sees tears in Jane's eyes* Take a break for a few minutes; I think you need a moment's rest.
Jane:Thank you, Supervisor. *Jane smiles for the first time at the Supervisor* Can- I mean, may I ask you something, Supervisor?
Supervisor:If you consider it a polite question then yes, you may.
Jane:Did you... Or do you... Do you have a husband?
Supervisor:I did.Yes...
