Oh James Cagney was pretty good in some of his non-cooper releated movies. I just saw Yankee Doodle dandy that I had recorded a while back from TCM and Joan Leslie was just adorable in that movie. It has to go down in my books as my second favorite Joan Leslie movie right after Sergeant York. For anyone that hasn't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Cagney was a good actor but I just don't like his style. It may be silly but Yankee Doodle Dandy and The Story of Louis Pasteur are on my 'won't watch' list b/c Cagney and Muni beat out Gary for oscars in 'Pride of the Yankees' and 'Mr. Deeds' respectively. Those are in my top five fave of Gary's and his performance in those was so great that he should have won hands down. I have actually seen parts of YDD years ago and Cagney's just way too hyper in that one. I mean it fits the character but I just can't watch it.

i love the year of 1942, but i must agree with angie, i dont like yankee doodle dandy, but i have watched it a couple times. i mean there were such hard choices for the best male performances that year. there was gary, walter pidgeon, and ronald coleman. those were my favs. my least fav of the performances was jimmy cagney's. i have a hard time choosing between them. while my heart belongs to gary in his performance of pride of the yankees, i really loved ronnie colman's performance in random harvest and walter pidgeon's performance in mrs. miniver. why do these people do this to me? ooooohh!

I didn't really notice James Cagney's performance in Yankee Doodle Dandy all that much as Joan Leslie was his co-star and I was paying more attention to her performance.
