Yes it is nice that John has befriended me. I am going to have to re-subscribe to that magazine to show my support to him and what he is doing on the radio and in the magazine for Cooper's memory. He is a true evangalist when it comes to spreading the word around about Gary Cooper. He has people on his show every week and always seems to bring up Gary in some way or another if at all possible. I really appreciate what he is doing big time.

I love too how nearly every week there is something about Gary on their radio show. We gotta keep his name out there!!! Here's an interesting article I found this morning on foxnews.com about Hollywood trying to make faith-based movies. It seemed especially relevant given the earlier post about Sergeant York which was able to beautifully show a Christian man trying to live out those values during a time when everything around him was pushing him in the opposite direction. With Evan Almighty, Hollywood Strikes Out Again in Effort to Appeal to Faith-Based Audience By Mark JosephDespite the bomb that was Evan Almighty, millions of devout Americans are still waiting to be invited into a theater to see a film that is entertaining, affirms their values and doesn't trivialize their deeply held religious beliefs. If Hollywood continues to create films like Evan Almighty, millions of traditionalists may grow to rue the day when Hollywood, with dollar signs in its eyes, began courting them with wilted flowers and stale chocolate. Mixing religion and entertainment has been long avoided for a reason: It's difficult to do well. But if the result of this grand new experiment is films that are neither faithful nor funny, millions of traditionalists will likely find less expensive ways to be entertained and inspired. www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287253,00.html

I'm not real sure what John means in this email I just got. It would appear that he has forgotten writing me the refund check for my subscription a few months ago. It would also appear that he may not be the managing editor for future issues? It may also be the case that I may have a super rare first issue of this new magazine.
Hey, Daniel:
Glad you received the issue. There are a few misspellings, but since it is a collector's edition, it was felt that they should be kept in, make it perhaps unique. But you'll be receiving the (somewhat) same issue when it is (finally) published. Thanks for your patience. Incidentally, I am not managing editor! My name will be gone.
What a generous offer, Daniel. Very much appreciated. If it's not a hassle, please send MJD to:
Address deleted for posting
Let me know how much and I'll whip off the $$$.
Thanks and best,
John
I ended up getting a second copy of MJD and decided to send it to John after he sent me this magazine. I will still make you two dvd-r's with it on. One with the movie on and the ohter with the extras. I didn't get it from amazon but cancelled that order and ordered from two other places and they both arrived in the mail. I'm not going to ask for any money as he might someday decide to send me some super rare dvd-r of one of Cooper's three talkies that I don't have out of gratitude. (well one can hope for such a thing to happen I guess). And he's already sent me this advanced printing of the magazine with all the mispellings in it. Actually after working all night and staying up all day today, my words I type are getting very hard to keep track of for spelling myself and will be hitting the edit button quite a few times I think tomorrow.
I am not sure if I do want to subscribe to Icons if in fact John will not be the managing editor. I am not sure what all is involved with that but if he's not going to be involved, it may be lacking in Gary Cooper coverage in future issues.
I know I did promise to send Kim an original if I got two and then when you didn't get yours, I figured it was way to hard to decide on who to send the original to and who to send the dvd-r copies to so I decided to send you both copies and send the original to John as I don't think he would appreciate getting a bootleg copy sent to him in the mail. Well anyways it will be an exact copy of the original with no loss in quality or extra features. The original is on a dual layer DVD-9 which means I can not fit it all on one DVD-R single layer dvd but can fit it on two DVD-R's (one for movie and other for extras).

And as you can see, I think I am making up for no one else getting a reply back from John by posting every single email that I ever received from him so that everyone can share in his knowlege of Gary Cooper. He has sent me some dandy emails in the past on Coop and I am saving them all for future reference.

I think it's great that you are sending John the copy of MJD as I'm sure he will love it. I'm perfectly happy with a dvd-r copy as all the movies I have received from you been great copies!

That was a great article!!! I like how they pointed out that he wasn't playing a charicature of a westerner in his westerns, he was different in everyone and authentic. Without saying his name you know they were talking about John Wayne in that he wore nearly the same outfit in all his movies and I think did seem more like he was playing a charicature instead of characters. Also I don't believe Wayne could actually do the things he did in his films but with Gary I do. That's probably b/c like they said a little bit of him was always in those characters. Yet he was not just always playing himself like they also pointed out. He was acting. I mean the more I think about it the more I'm amazed at how truly phenomenal he was as an actor. If there were more actors out there that had even half of his talent and ability there would be a lot more movies worthy of watching.
I loved too how he said certain directors are considered auteurs and their's tend to be the only works that are revered and studied. I think what happens in a lot of cases is someone who for whatever reason has some kind of influence decides who should be 'cool' and then others just follow it b/c of that person's opinions. Bob Dylan, I think, is a perfect example of this. Not sure if anyone here is a big Dylan fan but I am not. His voice is flat out terrible and his singing is for the most part unintelligible in many of his songs. Yet he is heralded as being great so many others may get overlooked b/c they aren't considered 'important' by the cool people. I'm not saying that people shouldn't like Dylan but it just makes me wonder how many really enjoy his work and how many just say they do to seem cool.

Here's an update on the ICONS radio show hosted by John which will be starting back up in May. here's a referenced link on referenced Borgnine interview stated below in John's comments: www.palmbeachpost.com/opinion/content/entertainment/arts_entertainment/epaper/2008/03/30/a1j_borgnine_0330.htmlHey, Dan: Thanks for the link. Nice interview. We have been in contact with his manager, who is very receptive. So far, for our new format -- which is Steve Bogart introducing the show, then Meir Ribalow and I interviewing the guest, and Steve closing out the show -- we have interviewed Catherine Wyler, daughter of William Wyler, Chris Lemmon, son of Jack Lemmon, Edward G. Robinson's granddaughter (whom he raised); and will be interviewing over the next two weeks -- TA DA!!! Patrick Wayne, son of the Duke (have been warned not to let my politics interfere with the interview .... hmmmmm); Kate Burton on her father, Richard Burton, and Cecilia Peck on her father, Gregory Peck. Have four shows in the old format, which we will run from middle of May to middle of June, and start new format on June 15. Old format shows to run are with Eli Wallach, Nancy/Tina Sinatra on their father, Frank, and two more (apologies, but they escape me at the moment). John I don't think I will be listening to the John Wayne one but the Gregory Peck one is very interesting. I just watched the long documentary on him on the bonus disc of To Kill a mockingbird and he does mention that Gary Cooper was the first person he met when he got to Hollywood. Gary asked him how many movies he did and Peck said two one good and one bad. Gary stated to him that he was already ahead of the game. I also very much looking forward to the Catherine Wyler show which should be heavy on Cooper with The Westerner and Friendly Persuasion and will probably get into the Big Country (Peck/Heston) and Ben Hur (Heston) I would think.
