"Just another busy workday" is all the nurses could think of on a day like today; nothing but bandaging wounded men and slapping away grabby hands. But if asked where in the world they'd rather be, all the nurses would choose this very military hospital. "Every time I see a wounded soldier I think of my Scotty." Sally would often say. "And I'd nurse those soldiers back to the front lines...if I knew every man I helped brought Scotty a little closer to me."
Kim hurries her pace toward the medicine cabinet, checking her watch in silent anticipation. "You got a date?" Mary inquires, washing her hands in the crude sink beside the medicine cabinet. Kim looks up and smiles, exhaling a laugh. "I'm that obvious, huh?" "We'll you've been looking at that darn watch all day; we kinda figured it out around 8 this morning." Mary chuckles, wiping her hands. "Well, if you must know; yes, I have a date. But I'm just going to have lunch with him, that's all." Mary smiles slyly and nudges Kim teasingly, "I bet you wish that wasn't just all. Maybe if you're lucky he'll ask you to wait for him -- that way you'll know he's the one." "But most soldiers ask the nurses to wait for them." Kim shrugs. "Why should he be any different?" "He's taking you to lunch, isn't he?" Mary asks; Kim nods. "And he's paying, right?" "Naturally." Kim replies. "He's a gentleman." "Well there ya' go. If a phony's gonna make a gal wait; he ain't gonna pay for her meal! Guys like that are cheap." "What a theory you've got there, Mary." Kim laughs. "I'll tell ya', if the bum doesn't pay for your meal, then walk out on him, sweetie. Don't wait around for nothin'." Mary nods her head as a matter-of-factly and winks. Kim laughs then inadvertently looks at her watch. "Oh!" She gasps. "I have to go, I want to be early, just in case he's waiting." Kim grabs her purse from the drawer in the nurses station and pats Mary on the shoulder on her way out. "Thanks!" "Glad I could help!" Mary shouts, craning her neck as Kim quickly makes her way outside. Once she arrives at the cafe, Kim takes a seat at her usual booth and scans her eyes about the room in hopeful anticipation. The waitress walks up to her table and awaits the order; Kim orders a cup of coffee and asks for just a couple more minutes for the second half of her party. The waitress nods her head politely and walks away; Kim continues to keep a look out for James. She takes a sip of her water and feels the presence of someone standing next to her so she raises her head, only to find Walter. "Oh....hello." Kim says slowly, though quickly recovers her rude act of disappointment and smiles kindly. "I wasn't expecting to see you here, Walter." "Well, Friday you said you came here every day for lunch; I thought I'd come and join you -- that is, if you didn't mind." Kim hesitates, discreetly looking around the room in hopes James doesn't misunderstand this situation and take it wrongly. She shakes her head weakly, "No, of course not." The two start making small talk for about 20 minutes; Kim steals quick glances at her watch every so often, wondering what's taking James so long. "And that's how I ended up here -- in Paris." Walter finishes explaining. "That's very interesting; did you ever expect to work as a dentist or --" "No, actually I wanted to become a marine biologist." Walter says, absolutely as serious as can be. Kim tries to hold back from laughing, she nods intently, "Oh is that so?" She cracks a smile. Walter begins speaking once more, though Kim's focus is no where near marine biology. She perks as she notices the figure of a tall soldier stepping into the cafe, searching the crowds to find her. Walter notices her attention is thrown and follows her gaze, turning around to find James walking closer. He sees Kim's eyes brighten up like sparkling diamonds, coming alive and dancing as she fixes her eyes upon this stranger. "Hello Kim." James smiles excitedly, his eyes also bright with the same kind of glitter. "Hello James." She smiles back. Both seem to be in their own little world, until James' attention is fixed upon Walter; his brow lowers, not in anger, but in confusion. He looks to Kim for an introduction. "James, this is my friend Walter." Kim nods toward Walter's direction. "Nice to meet ya'." James extends his hand. "And to you as well, sir." Walter replies hesitantely...and a bit formal; as if sizing him up. James takes a seat next to Kim and sits quietly -- all three feeling somewhat awkward. The waitress approaches and asks for the orders. After lunch, Walter shakes James' hand and gets up to leave. "It was nice meeting you, James, but I must get back to the clinic" He then looks to Kim and smiles, "Nice seeing you again, Kim." "You too, Walter." Kim replies as Walter exits. James sits across from Kim and gazes at her, with a gentle smile. "I didn't think you were going to make it." Kim says, fixing her attention on James. "I'm sorry I kept you waiting, but I was given dish duty." He replies, giving a 'bleh' look. "Dish duty?" "Yeah," James laughs, "and you've never seen a guy wash dishes so fast in your life!" Kim laughs, "I'm just sorry we couldn't talk alone." "Who was he anyways? I know you said he was a friend but he didn't seem to know a thing about you." "Oh, we met last week, here at the cafe." Kim chuckles, "you're not jealous, are you?" James smiles sincerely and shakes his head, "nope." Kim folds her arms and gives a look of surprise -- slightly joking. "And why not?" "Because he's not your type." James replies. "And who's my type?" "I am." James replies simply. Kim goes to disagree playfully, but the come-back gets stuck in her throat and she smiles. "You're absolutely right."
As they get ready to leave the booth, Kim opens her purse to pay for the meal but James had already laid down the full bill -- tax included. Kim pauses for a moment and studies his face discreetly, finding that his gentlemanly gesture was sincere and that he held no underlying motive to gain praise; he simply had a kind and generous heart, and knew how to treat a lady. Kim smiles proudly and links her arm with his, both exiting the cafe.

Angie went to bed that night disappointed the she hadn't found Phillip yet. She berated herself though for getting her hopes up and she knew it was a long shot that he would pass through the little air base. Still, she said a prayer that she would find him and he would be alright. The next morning over breakfast Angie commented on how she had never seen the kinds of planes they were flying up close and how exciting it all seemed. One of the pilots, Lt. Jones, said he would let her sit in his plane if she wanted to and she excitedly agreed. "Now you just step up here and then hop in" he said as he helped her up onto the fusilage. He chuckled a little at her because she was so small and more or less fell into the plane. Finally righting herself so she could see all the controls, Angie marvelled at how complicated it seemed. "How do you remember what everything is for?". "Well they train us pretty good and if you don't remember you crash so that's incentive enough to learn as much as you can." "Is this your wife?" she asked seeing a picture of a pretty young woman stuck next to one of the dials. "Yeah, she's beautiful don't ya think?" Angie nodded. She continued to look over the cockpit when she saw another plane coming in for a landing. "You better get outta there." he said helping her get down. "That's our new squadron leader Captain Blythe and I don't want you or me to get in trouble." "Did you say Blythe?" Angie asked as her heart began to beat faster. "Yeah Captain Blythe, Phillip Blythe, I think. Why, do you know him?" Angie tried to conceal her feelings and said "Maybe, I grew up with a Phillip Blythe." "Tell the truth now, is he your sweetheart?" Lt. Jones said teasing her. "Oh no, we were just friends." she said in a very convincing tone. "Well come on let's go see if it's him." Reluctantly Angie followed Jones to where the plane had landed. If it wasn't him she thought her heart would break right there and if it was him she was afraid she might cry at the sight of the man she loved so dearly. "Captain Blythe?", Jones said to the man who nodded yes, "I'm Lt. Jones, I'm in your squadron." he said as they shook hands. "Nice to meet you Jones." he said in a pleasant tone. "I'd like to introduce you to someone who says she's a friend of yours." Jones turned around to Angie and found her hanging back quite a ways. He motioned for her to come closer and said "Captain Blythe, this is Miss Moore." For a moment, Angie and Phillip stood together silently, neither one knowing what to say. [img src="http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee180/VintagePrincess1901/2653-0046c.jpg" src=" "Jones, I need you over here!" one of the other men shouted. "Well I better go." he said as he left them alone. "Angie, what are you doing here?" he said shocked to see her this far from home. "I decided to join up and help if I could. I was a nurse for a while but then I got transferred here to help with cooking and things like that for the soldiers." She wanted to tell him that she joined up and asked for the transfer to the air field so she might find him. But, she was sure he only saw her as a friend and she kept the feelings inside. "Well I'm glad to see you." he said as gave her a polite, yet not too emotional hug. "I'm glad to see you too and I'm really glad to see that you're okay." "Aw, you don't have to worry about me." "You're my friend Phillip, of course I worry about you." she said smiling. "Well I better get back to business." he said turning and walking back to his plane. "See, she still just thinks of you as a friend" Phillip said to himself, "and that's all she'll ever see you as." Angie stood in the kitchen getting things ready for lunch as she thought to herself "That wasn't the way a man who loves you holds you. I guess he'll never love me like that." She wiped a tear away that was about to run down her cheek and got back to work.

Wow, very emotional and heartbreaking! I love that photo, by the way.
I'll update soon! If not tonight, then maybe Sunday evening. I have a party to go to tomorrow, otherwise I'd do it then.

A few days later, after work, Kim quickly makes her way back to the apartment to get dressed for an evening out with James. As she dresses, her mind reminisces about the past few days -- days she'll most certainly never forget. Yet through it all, she can't help but notice things are moving quickly between them; no, they've never kissed, or even hugged, but their emotions seemed to have ignited something in both their hearts the moment they met -- something neither one has ever felt before and something that neither one can explain. But she excuses the situation and calls to attention the fact that they are in the heat of war, and any day James could be sent back to the front -- then where would they be; and who's to say he'd even make it back? No matter what the other women said, Kim knew deep down inside that it isn't right to make empty promises to these soldiers and give them false hope, no matter how desperate they may seem. But James was different, and everyone who saw them together knew it. She promised herself that if James would ever ask her to wait for him...she would, no matter how long it would take. And she prays that tonight will be the night... Kim takes a look at her watch and quickly takes a comb through her hair and fixes in place a loose curl; she nods her head in approval and heads out, turning off the lights and locking the door behind herself. Once she arrives at the restaurant, she scans the room to find James, but he seems to be nowhere in sight. "Excuse me, sir." Kim taps on one of the waiters' shoulder. The man turns around and politely smiles, "Yes, miss?" "Have you see a tall soldier; he's about 6'3 with bright blue eyes." The man's smile immediately turns to a frown and he motions, with his index finger, for her to follow him. The man leads her to the kitchen, and off to the side on a stool sits James. Kim thanks the man, then walks up to James, chuckling. "What are you doing back here?" She laughs. James looks up at her and stands up, sweetly giving her a 'hello' peck on the cheek. "Well, I was gonna fill a picnic basket full of food, but everyone kept shovin' me aside." Kim knits her brow together and she shakes her head, "What for?" "I kept diggin' my finger into the sauces." He laughs. Kim giggles and shakes her head, "I'd put you in the corner, too, if you did that in my kitchen!" "Say..." James stands up and admires Kim's dress, "Is that a new dress?" Kim looks down and shrugs, "It is if you want it to be. I've had it for a couple years, but I've never been on a date -- aside from these past few days...with you." She smiles, studying his face. "It's beautiful." He smiles, studying her face as well. One of the chef's raises his voice in French, breaking them from their gaze, and scooting them out of the way. "I guess we better get out of here." James laughs, taking the basket that's only half full. They come to a quiet little park, a couple blocks from the restaurant; James removes his jacket and lays it down for Kim to sit upon. He opens the basket and first opens a bottle of sparkling grape juice, then pours it into two glasses. After they finish with their meal, Kim lays her head on James' shoulder and sighs somberly. "It's going to be lonely when you leave." . He gently pulls her closer and kisses her forehead, wanting to ask if he could write to her, but fearing she'll only say no. "It'll be lonesome without you." He lays his head ontop of hers and cringes, dreading the day he'll have to leave her side. She raises her head and looks into his eyes, "James, do you ever think of me when we're not together?" James sits up a bit, almost shocked that she doesn't truly know how he feels about her. "Well, do you?" She asks, now almost perturbed of his hesitation; fearing he may be trying to break some heart-breaking news and not know how to explain himself. He gazes into her eyes and replies softly, "When I sleep I dream of you and when I wake my first though is 'it's great to be alive in the same world as you.' Kim, I love you, and I've never stopped thinking of you from the first minute I laid eyes on you." Kim hardly knows the words to speak, she's too surprised to even breath. She exhales deeply and searches his eyes, wanting to reply but James interrupts. "Kim..." He says quietly, placing his index finger under her chin, guiding her face to his. "I..." She pauses, then stutters, "I...I..." James pulls Kim into his embrace and kisses her passionately. She melts into his strong grasp and wraps her arms around his neck. James slowly pulls away and leans his forehead against hers, touching her nose with his. "Do you ever think of me when we're not together?" He inquires teasingly. She giggles then hugs him tight again. "I love you, James," she sighs and closes her eyes, taking the moment in. "I love you so much." He wraps his strong arms around her and holds her close. Later that evening, James walks Kim back to her apartment and the two share their sweet goodbyes. "I'll see you tomorrow...sweetheart." James smiles sweetly, giving her a gentle peck on the cheek. "I can't wait." She replies, gazing deeply into his eyes. James pulls her into another tight embrace and kisses her passionately. "I don't want to leave you, Kim." James says half jokingly as he hugs her close. They both know he isn't just talking about tonight -- but when his leave ends, and he'll be shipped back to the front. "I don't want you to leave either, James." Kim takes his hands and caresses them against her cheek, as if cherishing their last moments together. James kisses her hands, "Good night. I'll stop by tomorrow and take you on a long walk." Kim smiles longingly and nods, "I'll be waiting..." With that said, Kim walks inside, and closes the door behind her, sighing blissfully.

Angie had finished supper and was setting the table when the officers came in and sat down. Phillip had been too busy to come in for lunch and she was happy to see him now at dinner. He had always been a very likeable easy going guy and she wasn't surprised that he seemed to have already become friends with the other officers stationed there. "Hey any of you guys want to take a guess at how many sweethearts Phil has waiting for him back home?" Sgt. Burke joked. "Oh I'm gonna say about 5" another man chimed in. "No I reckon it's at least in the double digits!!" said yet another. "Oh no, you guys are way off" Phillip said laughing along with them. "Well how many is it?" After hesitating for a moment, Phillip made a zero with his hand in the air. "None!!" Burke said loudly. "I don't believe that. Just about everybody's got a sweetheart waiting for 'em." "Well not me." Angie listened to the conversation as she served their dinner and she was relieved that no one was waiting for him back home. "Hey Angie, do you believe that Phillip doesn't have a sweetheart?" Burke asked her with a big grin on his face. "I don't know. He was always quite popular with the girls in our hometown." she said trying to joke along with the rest of them. "Oh yeah, you two grew up together didn't you Blythe." Jones said remembering that Angie had told him that earlier. Phillip just nodded as he began to eat. The other officers followed suit and soon the conversation was ended as the men were now more concerned with their grumbling stomachs than with their new buddy's love life. After dinner Angie served coffee and then began to wash the dishes. Phillip kept trying to steal glances of her without the other men seeing him. "I don't how anyone could look that pretty in a dirty apron." he thought to himself. Before Angie had finished cleaning the kitchen all the officers had either gone outside to smoke or headed off to bed, except Phillip who was still sitting at the table slowing sipping his coffee which had long since turned cold. "Would you like some more before I pour it out?" she said holding the coffee pot. "No thanks. Gee, you're sure the last person I ever expected to see here." he said. Angie chuckled a little and said "I know, how weird is it that we're both from the same small town and we both ended up at the same place thousands of miles away from home?" she said knowing full well that she had come here hoping to find him. "You shouldn't be here. It's too dangerous. You should have stayed home." he said as he got up and put his mug in the sink. "Well they won't let women fight and I wanted to help somehow." she said as she washed the dirty mug. "Why couldn't you have gotten a job working in a factory or something like a lot of other girls?" "You know I've always wanted to travel but I couldn't afford it. This was my chance so I took it." "You're still just as stubborn as ever. Once you get an idea in your head you can't let it go." Phillip said smiling. "And how is that any different from you?" she joked back. "Okay, you got me there." Angie finished the dishes and took off her wet apron draping it over a chair to dry. "Well it's been a long day and I think I'm gonna go to bed" she said. "Yeah I guess I better too." Later that night unable to sleep, Angie went downstairs to make some tea. When she walked into the kitchen she saw Phillip sitting at the table in the dark. "Phillip! Oh, you scared me. What are you doing up?" "I couldn't sleep." he said getting up and walking over to her and taking her hands in his. "I couldn't stop thinking of you and how since I saw you this morning I've wanted to take you in my arms and kiss you and never let you go." "Do you really mean that?" Angie said with tears beginning to run down her cheeks. "With all my heart I mean it." Phillip then let go of her hands and wrapped his long arms around her waist pulling her close to his chest. "I love you Angie" he said softly and sweetly. "I love you too" she whispered through her tears. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/legionofthecondemned11.jpg" src=" Their lips met in a passionate kiss the likes of which neither one had ever experienced before.

"Did he pull you into his arms gruffly?" Sally asks as she and Kim wash linen in the hospital's laundry room the next morning. "You know, 'cause most of these guys violently romance their girls...like they've gotta impress us or somethin'." Sally takes a pillow and imitates one of the soldiers; Kim begins to laugh at her friend's vigorous and lively impersonation. "No," Kim replies, chuckling. "He was quite a gentlemen." Sally pauses then snaps back into reality and drops the pillow, continuing with her work. "Well, you're a lucky one then, honey; you caught a real prize...and what a whopper, too. You hardly left enough man for the rest of us!" Kim cackles to herself and throws one of the damp sheets up onto the line. "He's only 6'3 -- besides, he has to pick me up or bend down just to kiss me; it may get frustrating when we're old fogies." "Nah, you'll have plenty of time before that happens." Sally laughs. There's silence among the girls as Kim's fears begin to surface again. "I just hope he won't have to leave too soon, I don't think I could handle it." Kim sighs, leaning herself against the tub of water, fixing her eyes onto the ground. "Neither could all the other nurses." Lucy laughs. "What are you talking about? Are they jealou--" Kim looks to Lucy and begins to laugh before she can even finish her sentence. "They are, aren't they? Well they better be! And just remind 'em all...that he's mine." Kim laughs teasingly then looks at the clock, throwing down the laundry and checking out for the day.
Kim makes her way toward the cafe, about to pick up James' favorite batch of cookies, when she spots him talking with a few of his friends and waves him down. James motions for her to join them; she walks toward the group and links arms with James, nodding to the others. "Fellas, this is my girl, Kim." James introduces them. The boys smirk and look her up and down, "Well hiya toots. Wowee, what a pair of legs she's got, eh Jersey?" One of the soldiers laughs, nudging another. "You aimin' to get a black eye, or did you forget she's already spoken for?" James remarks, inching his face closer to the man. "Oh, lay off, Montana; he's just kiddin' around." Another says. "It was nice meetin' you boys, but 'Montana' and I have a date." Kim looks up to James and smiles, gently pulling him away. "See ya'll later." She half turns and salutes carelessly. As they walk, James apologizes for the rude behavior. "Sorry about that, back there." "For what?" Kim asks, sincere. "For the way they were treating ya'. The army is hardly the place for charming gentlemen." He scoffs. "Oh, I'm used to it by now." Kim laughs it off. "You forget I work in a military hospital. We get talked to like that every day; sometimes we even have to physically--" "You don't belong here, Kim." James stops and turns to Kim. "Where do I belong then?" Kim asks, knowing this topic was bound to come up sooner or later. "Do I belong in a dusty old house, waiting to hear if you've been killed or not? I can't sit by and do nothing -- this is my war, too, and I..." She pauses, taking a deep inhale. "I want to be close enough to you. No matter how awful this place gets, at least I'll have comfort in knowing that I'm in the same country as you. James, please don't take that away from me..." James searches her eyes then averts his gaze to the ground, sighing. "All right." He looks up and grabs onto her arms gently. "But promise you'll keep yourself safe, and get a different job." Kim laughs, wrapping her arms around his waist, "What kind of job would you like me to get?" "I don't know, any old job that gets you away from that hospital. Become a waitress, or even a secretary. Just give me the comfort in knowing that you're not the object of some perverts desire." Kim nods her head and smiles, "I promise." They begin to walk again, smelling the fresh aroma of freshly blooming lilacs. They come to the bench where they first sat, the night of the dance and James positions is arm behind Kim; she lays her head on his shoulder. "When I do leave," James breaks the silence, "can I write to you?" Kim smiles and faintly nods, "Of course. I'll even send you those chocolate chip cookies you love so much from the bakery." James wraps his arms around her shoulder and pulls her close, "You sure know how to spoil a man, don't you?" He laughs. "I hope I don't spoil you too much, when we get back to America you may demand those cookies every week." Kim laughs, "And I'll have to order them from this very bakery. The shipping will get expensive after a while." James chuckles then kisses her forehead. "We'll buy a home in the country, and you'll be my full time chocolate chip cookie maid." "Just the maid, huh?" Kim teases. "It'll be a simple job. And after a few dozen batches you'll get promoted." "Yeah? Promoted to what?" Kim folds her arms and laughs at the stupidity of the conversation. "To being a full time wife." James replies seriously. "Very funny. And we'll have a dozen snickerdoodles, right?" She laughs. "However many you want." James replies, again with all seriousness. Kim pauses and re-positions herself, searching his eyes, "Are you being serious?" James sits up and holds her hands in his, "I'm being very serious." Just then, James' Commanding Officer approaches the two. James looks up and immediately stands at attention. "Private Baker, I'd like to have a word with you in my office at once." James turns around and whispers, smiling to Kim. "I'll need an answer when I get back." Kim smiles excitedly and nods, then watches as the two walk off.

That's so beautiful!!! I wanna have snickerdoodles with Gary too Angie awoke to find herself tangled in her sheets on the floor. She rubbed her shoulder that was smarting because of the fall and realized that she had only been dreaming about Phillip. She got back into bed and mumbled to herself “If only that was real." Also unable to sleep Phillip paced up and down in his room looking at the picture of Angie she had given him before he left. Many other girls also gave him pictures but he had kept only hers. "I thought maybe I'd get some reaction from her when I told the guys I didn't have a sweetheart but she didn't seem to care." he said aloud to himself as he sat down on his bed. "Maybe I should just tell her how I feel. But what if she doesn't feel the same way? How could we stay friends after that?" He got back up and began to pace again. "Angie, I love you.” he said aloud to no one. “Huh, what's that? You don't love me back. Oh okay well just forget I said anything. Yeah like that'll work." Frustrated he laid back down and stared at the ceiling. Several days passed as Angie and Phillip went through their same routines. They each pretended not to be in love with the other but it was silently breaking their hearts keeping all those feelings bottled up. Angie was outside one morning gathering eggs when she saw Phillip walk by. He smiled at her and it sent her off into a wonderful daydream. They were at a fancy party wearing beautiful clothes and dancing to romantic music. Then they slipped out into the garden to be alone. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/2653-0045c.jpg" src=" [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/legionofthecondemned-1.jpg" src=" Just as he was about to kiss her one of the chickens pecked at her ankle knocking her back into reality. “Stupid chicken” she muttered as she walked back to the house. She had just put the eggs up when some of the officers came charging into the house. “What’s going on?” she asked nervously. “We got word that the enemy is advancing and they’re going to evacuate the town. Our squadron is moving closer to the front lines.” Burke said as he went upstairs to get his things. Simone also came in and told Angie she needed to pack as they would have to leave as quickly as they could. All the civilians would head to the nearest village which was several miles away. Angie packed her things but her mind was on finding Phillip. She couldn’t leave without saying goodbye. She went outside to look for him but didn’t see him anywhere in all the confusion of men running here and there and planes taking off with loud roars. Finally she spotted him and ran towards him shouting his name. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/2653-0047c.jpg" src=" “You’ve got to get outta here Angie”. “I couldn’t go without telling you goodbye”. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/2653-0041a.jpg" src=" He put his arms around her and hugged her tight. She hugged him back and began to cry. He looked down into her sweet face and finally mustered up the courage to kiss her. [img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t163/coopsgirl_30/2653-0047b.jpg" src=" His heart began to beat faster when he realized she was kissing him back. “Miss Moore, we have to leave now!” Simone shouted to her. Angie looked up at Phillip and even though there were a million things she wanted to tell him, she couldn’t seem to get any words to come out. Still holding her close he said “Wait for me?” “Yes, I will” she said. He climbed up onto the wing of the plane but before he could get in Angie reached out to kiss him once more. James' commanding officer, Sgt. Samuels, takes a seat at his wicker desk and exhales deeply, taking a long winded sigh as his aging bones creak to take a seat. James stands at attention in front of the desk, waiting eagerly the moment he'll be dismissed back into Kims' arms. Sgt. Samuels takes his sweet old time arranging papers on his desk, placing files into flimsy drawers and fixing his glasses in place so the words in front of his face become visible. James struggles to remain patient and act in order of his rank, but he leans in just a bit and tries to earn Sgt. Samuels sympathy by letting him know that his girl -- possibly his fiance -- is waiting for him back in the park. "Sir, can I--" "How are you feeling, Baker?" Sgt. Samuels asks, setting down his papers and removing his glasses to look up at James. "Just great, sir." James leans back as a smile forms in the corner of his lips. "Never better..." "That's good to hear, Baker, good to hear..." Samuels voice begins to trail off as he leans back into his metal chair and lights up a cigarette. "You'll be ready to go back to the front as soon as we can arrange it, then." He sets down his lighter and takes a big puff, "I'll send for you tomorrow morning ar--" "Sir, I can't jus -- I have a two week leave; I have a girl waiting for me!" James pleads, hoping for at least an ounce of compassion. "Baker, if you're back to 100% health, by law your leave is immediately canceled and you're to return to active duty at once -- you know the rules." "Yes, but I just asked her to--" "Do I make myself clear?" James nods his head in defeat, knowing the military holds no special respect for 'love affairs' in the midst of war, and there'd be no denying that it's a lost cause to continue fighting. "Yes sir, I know the rules..." "But you know," Samuels clears his throat and adds rather quickly, "if there was any defense coming from you, I'd gladly take it into consideration." He replies somewhat slyly, though masking it with an utterly innocent tone. "Sir?" James shakes his head, confused. "If there were some way you still had a minor injury to that arm, I'd gladly extend your leave..." Catching on, James nods his head in a calm understanding and smirks, immediately beginning to rub his left shoulder, "I understand, sir..." Samuel breaks a smile and stands up to shake James' right hand. "Thank you, sir; I'll have one of the nurses keep an eye on it..." Samuels cackles out loud, "If you have anyone besides that darling little gal of yours nurse you back to health, I'll send you over to Germany myself." James laughs heartily and shakes Sgt. Samuels hand vigorously, "Yes sir!" He places his hat back onto his head and springs for the door, but immediately catches himself and turns around to salute sloppily. The Sgt. laughs and swats at James, as if to say , "ah, get outta here." And before a blink of an eye James is out the door. Kim waits patiently for more than 45 minutes, letting her mind wander through all the upcoming joys of marriage; anticipating the day they can begin a real life as man and wife, without the lingering fear and worry this war constantly brings as a reminder. She snaps from her daydream when she hears Sally calling her name. Sally sits down hard on the park bench and exhales deeply. "What's wrong with you?" Kim laughs, "Looks like you've been running a marathon!" "No, I just wanted to invite you and James to Scotty's party tomorrow afternoon!" Sally explains excitedly, still somewhat panting. "Oh, is Scotty back?" Kim asks, surprised. "He sure is! A couple of his army buddies decided on throwing him a 'happy 4 day leave' party in the dance hall. You and James will come, won't you?" Sally asks. "Of course; we'll be there." Kim assures her friend chipperly. "We'll be where?" James asks as he sits down next to Kim and places his arm around her back. "Sally's invited us to Scotty's '4 day leave' party." Kim replies happily to James, then turns to ask Sally: "What time does it start?" "Oh, any old time, I guess. It isn't a surprise or anything." "All right, well we'll stop by around 3 or so and bring some champagne." Kim looks to James and smiles, "Sound all right to you?" James gives Kim a peck on the lips and pulls her close into his embrace, "Sounds just fine with me, darlin'." Sally watches the two and mocks a sigh of devastation. "Oh, you two are killing me softly." Kim and James chuckle. "Well, I better be off; toodles!" Sally waves them goodbye and heads toward her apartment building. Kim turns to James and guides a stray hair behind his ears, "What did your commanding officer say?" "Oh, not a whole lot. I'm more interested in what you're gonna say..." "What I'm gonna say?" Kim chuckles. "About what?" "Oh, about a certain question that'll change both our lives forever." He replies nonchalantly, shrugging. "Oh, that!" Kim replies, as if the question completely left her mind. James laughs and nods, "Yeah, that..." "Well, let me think..." Kim stalls, taking a deep sigh and stroking her imaginary beard. "Darling, you're as bad as my Commanding officer!" He laughs in suspense, "I'm on the edge of my seat!" Kim laughs and throws her arms around his neck, "Of course I'll marry you, James!" James' tense body relaxes and he wraps his arms around her tightly, picking her up into his arms. "Don't tell me you ever doubted." Kim asks teasingly, a couple inches away from his face. "Nah, I knew you'd marry me the minute we met." James replies; half sure of himself and half relieved that she didn't say no. Kim chuckles in disbelief, "Oh is that so?" James nods as-a-matter-of-factly and smirks, "I'm right though, aren't I?" Kim pauses and nods, "Absolutely and completely right." She laughs. "Then we're gonna go out and celebrate." "Celebrate?" Kim asks, "Where to?" "The cafe -- and those delicious chocolate chip cookies." James walks off toward the cafe, as if on a mission to conquer that bakery.

That is way too sweet!! Reluctantly, Angie began to walk down the dirt road with Simone away from the ever advancing enemy. Instead of fearing for her own life however, she was worried about Phillip. They were walking away from danger, and he was flying right smack dab into it. His plane was the last to leave and she stopped and turned around to watch him go. But once he was up in the air his plane began to sputter and immediately came crashing back down. Angie started to run back towards the farm but Simone grabbed her arm telling her it was too dangerous. “I don’t care. I have to go back!” Angie yelled at her as she pulled herself loose and ran down the road. As she got closer, she was relieved to see the plane wasn’t on fire. She found Phillip still inside and unconscious. He had a cut above his left eye that was bleeding pretty badly and she figured he probably had some other injuries as well. Surprised at her own strength she was able to pull him out of the cockpit and get him on the ground. She held his head in her lap and ran her fingers through his dark hair trying to revive him. “Come on Phillip, please wake up. I can’t carry you any further, you’re gonna have to wake up darling.” After a few minutes of repeating this over and over, he began to come to. Looking up into her eyes he thought he was dreaming. “What happened?” he groggily muttered. “You’re plane crashed but you’re gonna be okay.” she said hoping it was true. “Do you think you can walk?” she said as she helped him get on his feet. “I guess I’ll have to. We can’t stay out here.” Phillip leaned on her as she helped him get inside. Once in the house she laid him down on the sofa and went to get something to clean and bandage the cut on his face. When she came back into the room she saw him rubbing his back and wincing in pain. “I think I might hurt my back.” he said. “Just lay still and try to relax, it’ll hurt a little less.” He did what she said as she fixed up the wound. “When I asked you to wait for me I didn’t mean to wait here.” he said trying to joke about their present situation. “I couldn’t leave you here Phillip. Now you need to try and rest a while okay.” She helped him get his jacket off and propped a pillow underneath his head. He was soon asleep and she sat in one of the chairs near the sofa holding his jacket and praying that he would be okay. After a while Angie got thirsty and she got up to get some water. When she laid his jacket down in the chair, something fell out of one of the inside pockets. She picked it up and turned it over to see it was the picture she gave him the day he left for basic training. She didn’t figure he would take it with him since she was only a friend and he had so many other girls giving him pictures as well. She looked through the rest of his pockets but didn’t find anything else. She sat down on the floor beside the sofa and cried. Not tears of sadness this time, but tears of joy because now she knew he loved her just as she loved him.

The next afternoon, well into the celebration, Kim and James sit next to each other, along with Sally, Scott and all their closest friends at the main party table. The large group laughs gaily as they sip their wine and get to know the people behind these military uniforms, gaining friendships instead of wartime enemies. From time to time, James finds his attention wandering further from the conversation and closer toward Kim's direction, admiring the gentleness of her smile and the genuine liveliness in her laughter. Out of the corner of her eye, Kim notices his loving gaze and holds it for a moment, fixing her own eyes upon the man she's fallen deeply in love with -- utterly, absolutely, ...desperately. As the group continues to chatter and laugh amongst themselves, James leans over and gently brushes aside the hair from her shoulder. "Dance with me..." He whispers, kissing her cheek tenderly. Kim smiles girlishly, blushing wildly as all eyes seem to be upon them; yet James could care less. The two are in their own perfect little world, and it seems as though that's how it's always been -- since the moment they met. All eyes had admired their love, yet neither quite seemed to realize because their focus had always been on one another. James stands up and extends his hand, whereupon Kim places her hand in his and walks onto the dance floor gracefully. She lays her head onto his shoulder and the two sway gently to the romantic rhythm of the beat. She takes a deep sigh, and breathes in the loveliness of it all; capturing every tiny little detail of this very moment, as if storing it in the deep recesses of her memory: always to remember, never to forget. "ATTENTION." Echos a mechanical voice, coming from one of the loud speakers on stage, startling everyone from their romances. The voice rings through the dance hall and immediately draws everyone's attention. Kim's heart leaps into her throat and her eyes study James's face as she silently begins to pray. The men stop dancing with their girls and the band peters out as everyone awaits the upcoming announcement in fearful anticipation. Kim looks up to the loud speaker, still, continuing to pray against her deepest fear... "Attention: Men attached to the following unit will report back to their post immediately. This is an official order from your commanding officer. All men from the 1st Battalion 28th Marines will report for duty at once." The entire room begins to grow louder as people scurry about to find their loved ones. Kim quickly fixes her attention onto James's face, searching his eyes for a glimmer of hope: a shake of the head, a squeeze of the hand; any sign -- any emotion -- that will assure her that it isn't her precious James who's being forced away from her safe and loving arms. James slowly lowers his gaze onto Kim and gently runs his hand down her soft and curly hair, studying her face, as if burning her image into his memory. Without a single word, without a single hesitation, Kim knows this will be their last evening together. "Oh, James, no!" She buries her face into his chest and breaks down into his arms, beginning to sob. The other women only hug their men tightly and say their goodbyes sensibly; of course they too are also grieved, yet none of them are as inexperienced as Kim is in such a situation as this. She's never had a man to say goodbye to, and she's definitely never had a man, whom she's loved so much, leave her for a war, possibly never to return again. "What'll I do?" Kim moans, wiping away the tears and searching his face in desperation. The fear begins to set in, "I don't know how--" James only smiles sweetly and gently caresses her tears away with his thumb. "Shhh." He whispers. "I promised I would come back, remember?" He asks, guiding her face to his. Kim nods weakly, beginning to calm herself when the dreaded question arises, and it's urgency is all too important to ignore this time. "But what if--...what if you don't come back?" James tried as hard as he could to put up a strong front for Kim, and she knew it; but what she didn't know was inside that courageous exterior was a little boy who was crumbling in fear. He's almost as scared as she is, but he fights the tears with everything he has, and it takes all the courage he can muster to keep himself from sweeping her up into his arms and escaping this bloody war for good. He knows his first duty belongs to his country, and he's certainly man enough to see it through. "Never question me, Kim." His body trembles with heartache and he grabs onto her arms tightly, clenching his teeth "Never!" He searches her eyes and pulls her into his embrace, kissing her deeply. Kim wraps her arms around him tightly, his body still trembling. She gazes into his eyes and forces a weak smile. "I won't, James. I promise. I'll wait until you come back; I'll always wait..." Her voice quivers yet she manages to stand strong, "I love you..." James hugs her close, gently stroking her hair; he whispers softly, "I love you, Kim." He kisses her once more then quickly makes his way out of the building and toward his barracks. "James!" Kim calls out as she runs toward him, tears streaming down her face. James immediately stops at the door and turns around to see Kim. Through the cacophony of dozens of farewells, they embrace fiercely. "Don't leave without telling me you'll write; please promise you'll write, James." Kim pleads. James pulls her into his strong arms and tries his best to swallow her fear with his tight embrace; giving her a few last moments of security and warmth. "I'll write." He whispers. "I promise..." James falls silent, holding her so tight that she knows he hates separating as much as she does. The stream of soldiers being called to duty whisk James away; and both their fingers part in the crowd. The remaining few couples empty out of the building and make their way outside to say their final goodbyes alone. Kim slowly trudges back in and leans up against the door, her emotions numb and her body feeling faint. She finally collapses next to the door and begins to sob uncontrollably.

Great update!
Angie dried her eyes and watched Phillip as he slept. Suddenly her mind was flooded with the memories of their life together. He was a couple years older than her and had lived next door as long as she could remember. He had always been big for his age and she had been very small. Some of the neighborhood kids picked on her because of her petite size and he always stood up for her like a big brother. They drifted apart some when they reached their teens but had become friends again now in their 20s. She couldn’t remember exactly when those feelings of friendship began to turn to love but they were there now and she couldn’t imagine ever wanting to be with any other man.
A song popped into her head that she had heard before she left home and quietly she sang it while she gazed into Phillip’s handsome face.
You’re the sunrise, the sunset, the meadows and the seas Darling you are all the world to me. You’re the raindrops, the rainbow, the blossoms on the tree Darling you are all the world to me. You are music and laughter, each shining star above. You’re the now and here after, my one and only love. You’re the dream I will cling to and hold so tenderly, Darling you are all the world to me.
Phillip awoke while she was singing but he pretended to still be asleep. Once she finished the song he opened his eyes and put his hand on her cheek. “I love you” he said weakly. “I know you do sweetheart.” she said smiling and sniffling trying to not to cry again. “I found my picture in your pocket.” she said as she got up and sat down next to him on the edge of the sofa. “I was afraid to tell you before I left because I didn’t think you felt that way about me.” he said. “After you left I went back home and cried until I was nearly dehydrated” she said laughing “because I wanted to tell you I loved you but I was afraid too.” “Well better late than never” he said as he reached up and pulled her face to his to kiss her.
For a moment she was lost in his bright blue eyes and his sweet kiss until cold reality hit her in the face. “Hey we’ve got to prepare in case the enemy comes through here. Don’t get up” she said as Phillip tried to sit up. “I’ve got to help you” he said trying to get up again. “No, you’ve got to rest and try to stay still as much as you can. I’ll take care of everything. Don’t worry.” She kissed him on the forehead and got up and went into the kitchen. She gathered up all the canned foods and put them down in the root cellar that was hidden under a big rug in the kitchen. She also filled several pitchers up with water and carried them down there as well in case they had to hide there for a while.
Next Angie went looking around the house trying to gather up any other supplies she thought they might need that she didn’t want the enemy soldiers to have. “Here, you should put these on” she said to Phillip showing him the pants and shirt she found in one of the closets. “Good idea. If anyone comes around it’s probably best they don’t see my uniform.” Angie sat down at the end of the sofa and pulled off his boots. Then she began to unbuckle his belt. “I can do that!” he said with wide eyes as he swatted her hands away. “Sorry, sorry! Just habit I guess from working back at the hospital” she said as her cheeks turned red. “Well are you gonna turn around?” he said as he sat up to change.
“Okay I’m done” he said a few minutes later. When Angie turned back towards him she couldn’t help but laugh because the pants were a little too short. “Stop it you’re gonna make me start laughing and it hurts” he said trying not to laugh at himself as well. “I’m sorry sweetheart. Now just lay back down and I’ll fix us something to eat.”

"Ma'am," Kim says weakly as she knocks on Mrs. Larson's, her Senior Woman Officer’s, door. "May I speak with you for a moment?" "What is it, Private Auzins?" Mrs. Larson replies sharply, her attention fixed on the papers lying before her on the desk. Kim walks into the room and stands at attention, not knowing how to ask for such a favor. She inhales deeply, building up enough courage to ask. "I'd like to be re-assigned." She holds her head up high and stares straight ahead, not making eye contact. Mrs. Larson's eyes slowly rise onto Kim. She folds her hands and leans forward, her elbows on the desk, "What makes you think you can just come in here and ask for a re-assignment; what's wrong with your current position?" "Well, I--..." "If I gave a new position to whoever just waltzed on in here, there'd be no one left to tend to the wounded." "I understand that, ma'am, but I'm having trouble--" "Trouble? What kind of trouble? If you can't handle the military, Private Auzins, then why did you sign up for this outfit?" "The work isn't too difficult for me, ma'ma, not at all, it's the men. They've been abusing me." She replies quickly, surprised that the lie spilled out of her mouth so easily; but she knows it's truly the only way she can keep her promise to James. "Oh?" Mrs. Larson's interest has peaked and she pays close attention to Kim's plea. Now that Kim has a firm excuse, she builds around it. "I've tried to handle the situations by myself, but I’ve gotten some threats.” Kim cringes in fear there won’t be an announcement, pressing into the subject further, ultimately getting her kicked out of the service. “What kind of threats?” Mrs. Larson inquires, her tone now sympathetic; only because she worries about a lawsuit. “Sexual threats.” Kim quickly looks down; she never was a very good liar. “Awww, you poor thing; I’m sure you don’t feel like talking about it – and you shouldn’t have to feel like we’re pressing you for details…” “I just want to make it go away.” Kim mocks a sob, throwing her eyes to the ground dramatically. “And it will, darling – it will; we’ll move you into Miscellaneous where you’ll be responsible for the odd jobs around the hospital. We’ve run low on staff lately so I’ll throw together a list of things and personally see to it that you’re out of harms way.” “Thank you, ma’am.” Kim sniffs back a couple fake tears. “I don’t know how to thank you.” “Not at all, darling. You just make sure you stay as far away from those terribly wicked men and leave the rest up to me, all right?” Kim nods her head weakly and makes her way out of the office. “So how’d it go?” Sally asks excitedly. “From here on out you can call me Private Auzins of Miscellaneous.” Kim laughs. “What?” Sally shakes her head. “Did you get the re-assignment or not?” “Yes, I got it. I just hope there won’t be any grabby janitors.”

I hope there aren't any grabby janitors either After dinner Angie helped Phillip into bed and got him propped up on some pillows to make him as comfortable as she could. Then she sat down in a chair next to the window and looked out on the beautiful countryside that she feared would soon be overrun with enemy soldiers. "Why don't you go get some sleep?" Phillip said sweetly. "What if you need something? I wouldn't hear you if I was asleep in another room. Besides I wanna keep a look out." The next morning Angie gathered some eggs and made breakfast. She brought it to Phillip and he ate it in bed. "This hotel has very good service" he joked as she set the tray on his lap. "All this service comes with a price though sir." She said back to him very seriously. "How much do you think my bill will be miss?" "That depends on how long you'll be here. So far it's up to about three kisses." "Can I go ahead and pay what I owe so far?" he said smiling. "I guess that would be okay" Angie said as she sat down on the edge of the bed and collected her payment. Later that afternoon she had just finished putting away the lunch dishes when she heard something off in the distance. Her heart began to race when she realized it was the sound of marching soldiers and tanks. Phillip was taking a nap and she ran to wake him up. "Phillip, get up" she said softly as she gently shook his shoulder. "What is it?" he said groggily as he rubbed his eyes. "They're coming!" When he heard this Phillip quickly woke up and he and Angie hid in the root cellar under the kitchen. The only light they could see was coming from the tiny slits in the floor above them. It seemed like hours but it was only about 30 minutes before the soldiers entered the empty village. Angie held tight to Phillip as they sat quietly in the darkness praying they would not be found. When they heard someone open the door and walk into the kitchen, Phillip held Angie even tighter as they tried not to make a sound. The soldier was soon joined by two more men. Phillip and Angie couldn't understand what they were saying but they split up and walked around the rest of the house leaving one in the kitchen. He went through all the cabinets and found them empty of food which made him angry by the tone in his voice as he muttered something in another language. He pulled all the dishes out from their shelves and threw them onto the floor breaking them into little pieces. Next he took his pistol and shot up the cabinets. Angie buried her face in Phillip's chest trying not to cry. They could also hear loud noises coming from the other rooms as the soldiers were trashing the house. The other men came back into the kitchen and then all three left. Still afraid to make any noise, Angie and Phillip sat quietly in the little cellar holding tight to each other. "It's been about 45 minutes since we heard them move out" Phillip said. "It's probably safe now but I'll go up and check it out first." "Please be careful" she said grabbing his hand as he stood up. He pushed the door open and in the early evening light he could see the floor was covered in broken plates and glasses. Quietly he walked over to one of the windows and looked out. He could see tracks left in the ground by the tanks but that was the only trace left of the enemy. "It's okay. They're gone." he said. Angie climbed out of the cellar and ran to Phillip putting her arms around his waist and began crying, letting out all the tears she had been keeping inside. "I wish we were back home" she managed to say while she tried to catch her breath. "Me too sweetheart" he said as he held her close and ran his hand through her hair trying to comfort her. Angie finally let go of him and wiped off her tears. "Come on you need to lay back down and rest" she said taking his hand and leading him back to his room. The furniture had been turned over and the sheets ripped from the bed. The soliders had used their knives to tear up the mattress and feathers were everywhere. Angie felt like she was about to cry again but she held it inside and told Phillip to sit down while she started to clean up. "Let me help" he said, "you can't clean up this whole house by yourself." "Yes I can and I will." "I'm gonna help" he said as he stood up. "No you're not!!" Angie shouted at him. "I'm not gonna let you hurt yourself even more just to straighten up this mess. Now sit down!" Phillip could tell how upset she was and he didn't want to make the situation worse so he sat back down and just watched quietly as she cleaned up. He could hardly believe that the tiny little girl he had grown up with and protected from the neighborhood bullies was now such a strong and capable woman who was protecting him. Once she got the bed straightened up she helped him get up and over to it. She got him all fixed up and was about to leave and begin cleaning up the other rooms when he reached out and took her hand. "Come here" he said as he gently pulled her down onto the bed. She laid down and cuddled up next to him as he wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry I yelled at you." "Sshhh, it's okay" he said as he kissed her forehead. Soon they both fell asleep as the sun set on what had been a very rough day.

Believe me, I KNOW this is incredibly corny and almost gag-ish, but I couldn't resist -- I swear, I couldn't. While all the inactive G.I.’s from the 1st Battalion 28th Marines sit around their barracks, drinking liquor and doing what normal rowdy Marines do during an evening off duty, James sits off in a dimly lit corner – away from all the commotion – and begins to write a letter to Kim. “Montana!” A soldier shouts from his bunk, stumbling toward James. “Montana!” He calls again, this time his voice reaches a louder pitch in a drunken drawl. “What do ya’ want, Jersey?” James replies, his tone irritated. “What are ya’ doin’ over here? The guys all thought you’d join ‘em in a game of ‘who can drink California under the table fastest’.” James only ignores the man and continues to write. Jersey notices he’s writing a letter and immediately fixes his blurred attention on the paper. “Say…you writin’ to your girl?” He peers over James’ shoulder, trying to steal a couple peaks at the contents within, but stumbles just a bit. James turns his paper over, away from wandering eyes. “Mind your own business -- and leave me alone, will ya’?” Jersey leans back, sitting upon the nearest bunk; he becomes a bit woozy, but clears his throat calmly and smiles goofily. “She pretty?” “Jersey, so help me, I’ll--” “Awww, come on, Montana;” he wines in defense. “You don’t have to keep any secrets from me; if she’s an ugly broad I’ll ju—“ “She ain’t ugly, and if you mention her just once more I’ll personally hand you over to the enemy myself!” Jersey keeps quiet; his silence echoes the sound of a defeated meddlesome soldier, ending his rude-question marathon. James flips his letter over to continue writing when Jersey interrupts with yet another question: “Was she that dame I saw outside that café in France?” James shoots up from his chair and goes to grab Jersey by the collar, but he only grabs the air as Jersey has already fled from the scene, as if his feet were on fire. --- After a long, monotonous day of washing and scrubbing bloody laundry in the back of the hospital, Kim quickly hastens home to her musty, lifeless apartment. She throws down her nurse’s cap on a nearby chair, next to the front door, and hurriedly kicks off her tight-fitting shoes, thumbing through a small bundle of un-opened letters; praying there'll be a letter from James included. Her hands fumble sloppily over each letter, casting the ‘unimportant’ ones to the ground, until she finally comes to a letter addressed from: Private James Baker. She wastes no time ‘taking in the moment’, but tears the envelope right open and sits upon her bed to read the first of his letters in joyous anticipation: My dearest Kimberly,
“Day after day here, the men are getting ‘Dear John’ letters; their sweethearts back home can’t stand the separation any longer or they find themselves drawn to someone who can be there for them. I realize again how lucky I am to have you and know without a doubt that when I step off that train you’ll be there. And when that day comes, I promise you, we’ll never be separated again. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love and miss you – especially when the nights are so long, and all I can think of, as I lay awake, is you; dreaming about our future together. I wake to the sounds of gunshots outside the barracks – fearing for my life every moment of the day; but when I lay my head upon that pillow – oh darling – those hours are sobering – because it’s then that I know what I’m truly fighting for. I know it’s only been 2 weeks since I left, but every day that I wake to this nightmare it seems like I’m getting further and further from you. I hope you know that no matter how far this war carries me, my heart will always remain closest to you – on that small little park bench in the middle of a French summer’s day. Oh darling I miss you so much and I just hope this war will soon be over so I can hold you in my arms again, and take you home to begin a real life. Please keep safe, and never stop writing; you’re the only thing that gives me a desire to stay alive and keep breathing...”
Forever yours, JamesKim holds the letter to her chest and begins to cry tears of happiness. She lies back onto her bed and takes a deep sigh of relief: her Marine is still alive and safe.

The sun shining into the little room woke up Phillip who was still holding Angie tight in his arms. He kissed the top of her head and she woke up. “Good morning beautiful” he said with a smile. “Good morning” Angie said through a yawn. “Did you sleep good?” he asked brushing her hair back from her face. “I sure did” she said as she nuzzled closer to him with her cheek resting against his neck. “Me too” he said.
“When I first joined and came over here, I think I cried myself to sleep every night worrying about you and wishing I could be with you.” After hearing this, Phillip wondered if Angie had lied to him about the real reason she joined the nurses corps. “Did you come over here because of me?” he asked with a serious tone. Angie hesitated for a minute then looked up at him and said “Yes.”
“Are you crazy? How could you do that?” he shouted at her as he sat up pulling her up with him. “Because I love you and I had to know you were okay” Angie replied sweetly hoping to calm him down. “If something happens to you because of me I’ll never forgive myself…or you!” “I’ll be okay Phillip.” “Angie, we are in the middle of a war zone. I’m hurt and we’re eventually gonna run out of supplies.” “I won’t apologize for what I did” she said standing up with her hands on her hips. “If I hadn’t been here you probably would have died out there in that field. How could I live with myself knowing you were here alone, hurt and helpless”. “I’m not helpless” he muttered cutting her off. “Oh yeah? Who pulled you out of the plane and helped you get to the house Mr. Macho Man?” He had no response to that and he just looked down at his hands folded in his lap. “I’m gonna go make us some breakfast” she said in an exasperated tone as she left the room.
About 15 minutes later Phillip walked into the kitchen and sat down. Angie had cleaned the broken dishes from the table but others were still strewn about the rest of the room. She looked up from the eggs she was cooking for a moment but didn’t say anything. When they were done she put his in another skillet and left hers in the one she had been cooking out of and set them both down on the table. “There aren’t any plates left so we’ll have to eat out of these” she said looking at the skillets as she sat down.
“You’re right” Phillip said looking down at his food. “What?” Angie said finally looking up at him. “If you hadn’t been here I probably would have died. The crash might not have been enough to do it but the soldiers surely would’ve finished the job. I just wish you weren’t here, for you own good” he said calmly. “I know.” “Do you? Do you really know how much I love you?” he said looking directly in her eyes. “I love you more than my own life Angie.” “I know Phillip, because I feel the same way about you. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be here.” Angie got up and put her arms around hugging him tightly. “We sound like a corny movie.” She said laughing and wiping her eyes that had teared up. “We better eat before the food gets cold.”
“It feels good to sit up in a chair” Phillip said as Angie washed the dishes. “That’s good. Don’t over do it though.” “How can I over do sittin’ in a chair?” he said jokingly. “Are you trying to start something with me again mister?” Angie said joking back with him. “No ma’am” he said smiling broadly. Angie went back to washing dishes but something got her tickled and she started giggling.
“What’s so funny?” Phillip asked. “I was just thinking how jealous all the girls will be when we get back home. I’ll have the best souvenir anyone’s ever seen.” Phillip’s cheeks turned bright pink as he got up and walked over to Angie. He put his arms around her waist and gently kissed her neck. This made her giggle even more than before and she turned around to kiss him back. With her arms around him she was feeling his lower back when he said “What are you doing? That tickles!” “Sorry sweetie. I didn’t mean to tickle you. I just wanted to see how your back was.” “What do you think’s wrong with it?” he said. “There’s no swelling and you can walk around better today so it’s probably a herniated disc or something like that.” “That sounds bad” Phillip said getting a little upset. “It sounds worse than it is. If that’s what it is, it’s a soft tissue injury and those can be tempermental and take a long time to heal. Basically, you threw your back out and you need to take it easy.” “I am getting a little tired. I think I’m gonna lay down for a while.” “Okay, I’m gonna clean up this mess” she said looking around at all the broken dishes still littering the floor.
